"I’m loving Thailand. It’s very different from Iceland, but similar to the Philippines," says Kristófer Reyes.
In 2024, the half-Icelandic, half-Filipino centre-back swapped the sub-zero temperatures of Iceland for the tropical climes of southern Thailand to join Krabi FC in Thai League 2.
"A big part of why I wanted to move to Asia was to adapt to the climate and try to get back on the radar of the Philippines national team," says the 26-year-old.
He was called up to Sven-Göran Eriksson's Azkals training camp in 2019, however, without international clearance for the following four years, he was unable to rejoin the squad.
He’s currently the only Icelandic national playing in South-East Asia, and only the second-ever to line up for a Thai club - the first was Sölvi Geir Ottesen who played for Buriram United in 2017.
He describes Thai football as "man-to-man, fighting for each ball", whereas the style he’s used to playing in Iceland isn’t as "high intensity and is more tactical".
"I’d love to play for the Philippines national team," he says, but "we’ll have to see how it goes," on the prospect of joining a club in the newly expanded Philippines Football League when his Krabi contract expires in May.
Reyes gives us the lowdown on 20-hour bus journeys to away matches, his favourite Thai dishes, and shocking bathrooms.
