Portrait mode--I am sorry this video is in portrait mode. Honestly, I was just making drapes one day and my husband thought it would make a good video :) I never thought so many people would watch it (but I'm grateful you have!)
Interfacing the top of the drapery panel--I use iron-on fusible interfacing and cut it into 3 inch strips. It is more flexible than traditional drapery "crinoline". You don't have to use it, but it does give your drapes a bit more professional finish and protects your fabric from being torn by the drapery pins.
How to position the drapery pins--after I make the drape, I lay it flat on a table, wrong side up, and then put a drapery pin in each end (about 1/2" in from the end). I then figure out how many drapery rings I have and space out the rest of the drapery pins accordingly. I like to have about 5-7" between pins.

USE THIS TUTORIAL! I followed this step by step and my curtains have turned out BEAUTIFULLY! I did not use the curtain pins…I just bought the clip hoops and clipped them to the top of the curtain…my fabric was a but too delicate for the pins. There is a curtain tape you can buy for the top of curtains but I did not do that. If you want to try this, just make sure you measure everything carefully and watch this video several times then watch it as you sew. Iron, iron, iron then iron again. Make sure your fabric is ironed BEFORE cutting your fabric so you get a nice square piece without bunching. Manhandling the fabric and cutting it is the most difficult part of the process. My fabric was 108 inches wide (it was quilt wideback) so I cut it on the fold on the floor. I used my knee pads a lot! Cut your lining fabric 4 inches narrower than your main fabric and cut it the same length as your finished curtain length…as she says, but is kind of hidden in the video….these turned out perfectly! Thanks so much for the tutorial.

This is a very good instructional video. edit: I've been researching making this type of drape for a couple weeks now, and this is by far the best video. This video is amazing, Krista is wonderful. I did it! Pink toile blackout lined drapes with fabric I have been holding onto for 20 years. I never used it because I only have very basic sewing skills and didn't want to waste the fabric. Krista, they say you never know how one kind word or gesture can change someone's day or life. I know exactly what you mean about the huge impact, the inner impact this has had on you. I feel the same way. I have had fabrics that are so wonderful that I cherish them for their beauty, sometimes for sentimental reasons, and I hesitate to even cut into them. For various reasons, Krista’s video has impacted me even emotionally. It takes me back to the times I learned methods from mother, grandmother, and aunts, all excellent seamstresses. I bought several duvet covers at the Salvation Army Thrift Store and they have a nice fabric on one side and a plain fabric on the other side (a ready made fabric and liner). I bought them to make lined drapery for my living room window. I have bought several second hand books on how to make curtains. They all explained measuring the window and simple curtains (so simple a 5-year old can make them with no instructions). None of them explained anything understandable for lined drapes and I have been so frustrated with these duvet covers on hand and no way to turn them into lined drapes. Thank you!

Oh how funny! I was just thinking about you this morning and remembering how you and your little girl (who is not so little now I'm sure!) used to pick me on Sunday mornings for Divine Liturgy back when I was a graduate student at PSU studying, among other things, Arabic. A few days ago I made a basic lined curtain panel for a kitchen cabinet (my first sewing project after years of being too ill to sew) and it just didn't look nice and crisp like I wanted it to. I’ve never enjoyed watching some sew more than this video! You kept it moving and gave a lot of good information. drapery has been my “Waterloo” for too long! One thing on the thread clipping that I found works along with what your do; I clip close on the right side first, then when I turn it over and pull-up the other thread, I tug it a bit and that usually pulls that tail inside the hem to hide it the I clip.

I am scared to find out what someone would charge to make the custom drapes but yet intimidated on making them myself. I want the lining & the fabric to lay well & not bulky. Nice work. I used the pin s on the header when I made silk panels. Now I like to use a tape that has strings to pull and get a draping. I find that I have to use 11/2 panels to drape a 77” span. All the cutting of lining and matching of drapery fabrics makes me a little muddled. You make it look easy. I do need a bigger table. Mine is only 40” wide and 75 in long. I really enjoyed your work and I do need a little help with the math. I get afraid to cut because I don’t want to make a mistake Thanks again, and I agree that drapery on windows are beautiful when done correctly.
