Kristen Stewart and Director Pablo Larrain on Spencer and Why So Many Cared About Diana

With Spencer arriving in theaters on November 5th, I recently spoke with Kristen Stewart and director Pablo Larrain about their Princess Diana film. While based on real people and actual events, Steven Knight’s script imagines what might have happened during a weekend celebrating the Christmas festivities at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate when Diana decided to leave Prince Charles and the royal family. Featuring one of Kristen Stewart’s best performances, the film has been getting fantastic reviews and I’d be surprised if her work and the film isn’t one of the players come award season.
During the interview, Kristen Stewart and Pablo Larrain talked about why they think Diana has remained in the spotlight even so many years after she died, if Stewart’s own history with the paparazzi helped her prepare for the role, how Larrain decided on the aesthetic choices in the film like the way he wanted the camera to move and Johnny Greenwood’s score, how Stewart prepares for an important scene and her process as an actor, and more.

Nice. Just saw this and I definitely have a new respect for Kristen as an actress. All her hard work paid off. Pablo Lorrain did a fantastic job as well. Beautiful set pieces and photography. Cheers to everyone on this

This interviewer is just bad I’ve seen him do other interviews. So robotic doesn’t reLly engage with the actors “I understand”, “I completely get it” it’s like your friend who doesn’t care response.

I can't believe the way the critics have raved about this, it's a glorified Lifetime movie. She didn't look or act like Diana. She did a whisper accent most of the time with some mumbling thrown in, and whenever she yelled she sounded just like "You named my daughter after the Loch Ness monster?!???" Didn't sound like Diana at all. I also didn't care for the way they made Diana seem like she was crazy the whole time. It seemed like Charles could have written the script.

Lifetime movie? Watch it again. I don’t think Lifetime has ever made a psychological horror/thriller film like this.

@@megamoviez "Saw Spencer, which eschewed the stylistic cliches of the biopic genre in favor of different cliches from the woman-having-a- nervous-breakdown psycho-thriller genre." Lifetime has made that kind of movie for ages. "Mother May I Sleep With Danger," was one of their biggest hits. Whatever you want to call it, it was a flop at the box office this weekend. Hype should begin to die down now.

@@megamoviez Some of them make a lot of money, and The French Dispatch is making more than twice the box office of Spencer, and it hasn't had 6 weeks of Oscar hype the way this movie has. Not all indies are flops at the box office. Also, Spencer isn't even an indie. Neon is a studio, and the budget was over $25 million, so it doesn't qualify as an indie. It won't be eligible for the Independent Spirit Awards for example.

@@a.madison9625 It’s not eligible for the Independent Spirit Awards but NEON is an independent film studio. $25 million in fact is the max for a film to be eligible for an Independent Spirit Award. So looks like Spencer could if it didn’t pass $25 million. Anything past that is a no go though. The French Dispatch we expected to do well because it has a big name like Wes Anderson behind it. This is a newcomer that not a lot of people heard of.

This movie.. I doubt they intended to insult Diana so much, but I'm a little bit annoyed at how they portrayed Diana in this movie. It's so fictionalized that it's hard to even say Kristen played Diana at all. She played the same character I see her playing in most of her other roles: disgusted, moody, depressed, nervous, and self-absorbed. They've got her hallucinating at times on top of all the rest. It's 1 part ghost story, and 10 parts *NOT Diana!* I feel bad for the real Diana's family.

I think she doesn't deserve to be in Diana's biography role movie, cause she has ever had an affair in a real life with a married man and she is not continuing her sequel movie"hunstman" because of the published scandal.

WTH? What does a situation in her PRIVATE life 9 years ago have to do with her work? And it's not a biography and it doesn't pretend to be. It's a FABLE based on a true tragedy....
