I can’t tell you how helpful this has been. I don’t really want to buy more clothes until I can figure out what I really want to wear and what I need to get rid of. Thanks for providing the tools to help me accomplish this. 🤩

Great video! NOBODY has said to wear a piece of clothing ALL day, what great advice. I stand in front of the dressing room mirror - everything seems fine, then it hangs unworn in my closet. I struggle with the why. I tell myself it's because I'm gained a few, I'll wait till I loose it etc...then it will be as I hoped. Thank-you for lighting that lightbulb in my brain - to get in touch with my actual feelings about it, by wearing it all day. It crystalizes your actual thoughts and feelings so much more clearly!

Hooray!! I'm so glad this resonated with you!! It makes such a huge difference to actually wear the piece.

Great video. Women get bombarded with so much information about style and what you “must have’ in your closet, it’s no wonder most of us are confused. I think just how you feel in something is the best way to tell if it is your style or not. After all, if we feel good it shows. Not getting held down with labels is great advice.

Exactly!! Thanks!

Hey Kristin, not putting names and labels on your style is the BEST advice I’ve gotten this year! It’s confusing and honestly? I do know what fabrics, shapes en silhouettes feel and look best in me. It’s just that I’ve started to question it because of all the information we are bombarded with on the internet. Thank you so much and have a great weekend ❤

This has helped me as I know I feel best in clothes that are basically classic but with a slight twist. I like to throw in a bit of trend but not if it’s going to be unwearable in a year or two. For example I added in some Mary Jane black flats this year but I think they will be timeless. One area that I do struggle with is jeans. I like straight, boyfriend, wide leg, boot cut, and flare. Not a fan of skinny jeans but the looser skinny is ok. So anyway I struggle to not buy too many jeans and trying to be more discerning and only buy jeans I really love and in a style or wash I don’t have. Right now I don’t need any and need to accept that and stop looking!

I love your channel. This is the best advice! I got sucked into the “top ten things every woman must have in her closet” videos on so many other channels….after ordering squared toed ballet flats and a camel colored trench coat (both looked awful on me)…..i found your channel!!!!! Yay! Now i am free to be me!!!!

Fabulous video! In watching this I realized that that is exactly what I have been doing going through my closet I'll wear an outfit to work one day and realize I did not feel great wearing it and it needed to go. I found that over the last few years I was ordering items online and telling myself they were okay but then they ended up hanging in my closet and never worn. I am much more conscious of what I like and if something doesn't feel amazing and I can make a few outfits with it it immediately goes back even though it is a hassle sometimes to do the return. At this point I now have a closet full of clothes that do light me up and it feels amazing!

Just found you and immediately subscribed. I'm a stay at home mom, now empty nester, and live a very casual life yet I love fashion just the same! I really resonate with much of what you say and this is a first. Of all of the people I've watched on KZbin, it's not often that I see someone I think I can identify with as far as style and "look". I live in the midwest, my kids are now both New Yorkers and I love to travel here in the US and overseas. I couldn't agree more about resisting the urge to label your style. It's nuanced and always shifting I think. I love Anthro, Johnny Was, Farm Rio, and yet I generally like solids and darker colors. There are no rules and it depends on your mood, the season, where you're going, the list goes on. I'm heading to my favorite guest ranch in northern Colorado this summer and the Old Gringos and Johnny Was are coming out! Thank you for sharing your advice! xx

What another great video! I am so thankful I happened upon your channel. No I certainly do not know my style as such, but I do know when I put something on and it sparks immense joy. Going forward I will recognize that as a yes and start to build from there. I have been guilty of purchasing items because I thought I “should”. Because someone on KZbin suggested I had to have an item for the perfect capsule wardrobe and ultimately I never wore it. So while I can’t define my style, I know my challenge. My task is to fill my closet with what pleases me and no one else. Everything you’ve said in this video made so much sense to me. Thank you for the wonderful videos you take the time to make.

I'm afraid my style is old lady graphic t-shirt and yoga pants or sweat pants!! I've lost 43lbs and I'm still on a weight loss journey, so I don't want to invest in a wardrobe for now. I'm kind of a chameleon in style--i see classic wardrobes and I love that, I see a colorful eclectic wardrobe and I love that, and I see a softly feminine romantic wardrobe and I love that!! I'm retired, so I don't go that many places, so a casual wardrobe is what I need! Color has never been a problem--i know what colors I love and look good in.

Thrilled! Thrilled! with your down to earth content. Thank you for adding to my life. I identify with perfectionism - and finally “get” how this has impacted all my wardrobe choices ( as well as so much else.) I was raised with lack and the need to strive for perfection. I was a bit freaked out by your move to Utah but my concerns proved groundless. (author In Polygamy’s Shadow)

I love your sweater! I live in a very hot climate so many cute long sleeved tops go unworn. I guess my closet is filled with clothes for a different climate (or an A/C environment.) I feel best is lightweight rayon or cotton boho blouses. They are easier to find in thrift stores than in retail shops.

I think we all put things on and then take them off and think, "OK, don't like it right now but I'll figure it out later," and then we put the go-to clothes on that we really like and wear (what's that saying, we only wear 20% of what we own on a regular basis?). Some analysis such as you did with the red jacket is in order - we know what we like even if we aren't always able to figure it out in words!
@KristenCainStyle5 ай бұрын
Yes!! This is precisely what happens. The dreaded 'figure it out later'. Thanks for your comment.

Discovered your channel about 2 weeks ago. Your style advice is so helpful to me. I'm 62 and about 5'10" (need long/tall pants with mid rise). May I ask your age and height? I'm really good at getting rid of items in my closet that don't spark joy. The problem is finding replacements. As a result, I have a very small wardrobe. I'm a dedicated thrift and consignment shopper. The cost of retail is ridiculous, especially for someone like me who eliminates items with frequency. Do you think you would ever do a video while thrifting? Thank you for your videos. Great content!

Hello, Robin! Welcome! I'm in my 58th year and I'm 5'6" tall. You're not the first to request a real time thrifting video. I'm planning to make one this summer. Usually, I'm so focused when I thrift that all filming stops! ;-) And I do enjoy watching others thrift so I'm on it!!

I lost weight for my style to look good on me and to find things that fit. I am pear shaped and 5'11" so putting in weight means my hips and thighs get bigger and finding long lengths in large sizes that look good gets harder and harder.

Know my style, love my style, can never find items in my plus-size that work well with what I have at my current size. And I am still kicking myself for donating my silk blouses, wool blazers and pants when I retired as they would have been great for more formal occasions (like funerals) that I must attend now.

My style has had to change drastically as I have developed a hernia in my abdomen totally distorting my shape. All the tailored clothes I was wearing no longer suit my shape. Luckily flowing dresses are in style and these are actually very cooling. 🤨

What about when you have favorite items that feel great on and you love them but then you look in the mirror and don't like how you look? Is it more important to feel good than to "look good"? (Looking good of course being completely subjective, based on who is looking!). Also, the wear-for-a-day technique with ignored clothes in the closet is such a revelation to me! Going to start doing that...
@KristenCainStyle5 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I'd start by asking why you love it on the hanger but not on your body? Are you being too hard on yourself? Is the garment just not the best fit, color, shape for you? It's normal to love something in a store or on someone else and then not love it on you. If the items in question really don't make you feel good... then I believe they don't belong in your wardrobe.

@@KristenCainStyle Thanks, Kristen, I am going to take those questions with me to the mirror next time❤
