Today I’m sharing a review on the preschool curriculum we have been using and are just a few weeks away from finishing up. The program is called Playing Preschool by The Busy Toddler. It is a play based gentle curriculum, made for ages 2-5 depending on your child’s readiness. Hope you enjoy!

My little boy is 5 and he knows all of his letters and their sounds he can count and recognise his numbers to over 100 but he really doesn't like to sit down to do school. He doesn't like work books and has a very poor pencil grip. I have spent the last few weeks looking on Pinterest and KZbin for ideas to engage him when I came across your video for the 2nd book of this curriculum. I was thinking to scale things back for him and to just have fun I also like the idea of themes. Do you think he would be too old for this? Any and all advice welcome. I was also looking into wild maths and a year of playing skillfully. Kind regards Wendy xxx

Hi Wendy! So to answer your question, it depends on your next step with your son. Are you ready to begin learning to read since he knows all of his letters and sounds? If so I would try to find a hands on phonics program and just focus on that. This program has so many fun activities that he would probably really like, however the concepts will not be a challenge for him. So it depends on what you want your next step to be, if you want to take a break from learning new things and just want to have some fun then yes it would be great! But if you still want him to progress in skills, this probably won’t help him do that. I totally understand where you are at! My son is really active and I’m still searching for what our next year curriculum will be because I would love to find something similar to Playing Preschool but more for kindergarten. I am looking at possibly using Primer with Pooh from A Year of Learning with him next year. They also have an elementary level just called A Year in the Hundred Acre Wood. Maybe take a look at A Year of Learning’s website? I’m sorry if this isn’t helpful, it’s really hard to say because your son’s skill level is more advanced than this program, however I think the activities would be ones he would enjoy.

I'm looking at getting this curriculum for my 4 and 5 year old. They are advanced in their learning like they are late kindergarten or early first grade level work do you think I should do this for them if so should I adapt the curriculum for them? How would you suggest that I can adapt the curriculum for my kids because I want something play based?

So the activities are really fun, but I think if your children are advanced in their capabilities, the concepts this curriculum goes over would be too easy for them. This curriculum is meant for a preschool level and just begins introducing letters to the child. It goes over letters, numbers 1-10, colors etc. If your children are doing some reading already this will not be a great fit for them as a full curriculum. I would suggest if activities are what you are looking for maybe check out her blog and Instagram! The Busy Toddler! She is always posting fun activities for free! :)

I was really looking into this curriculum but I was really put off by the fact that year 1 teaches uppercase names first. Where as I was looking to do lower case letter sounds first. So my question is do u think it can be customizable as per our needs?

It actually teaches both upper and lower case at the same time :) it also does talk about the sounds as well but there is more emphasis on sounds in year two. You could fully put more emphasis on sounds if you wanted to pretty easily I would think!

I see you had your book printed. Where did you go about printing it and, if you don’t mind me asking, how much did it cost to print and bind it?

Hi! I used a small online printing company run by a mama, but it seems she may not be printing anymore. I’m not sure how much it was, I think about $15? There are so many online printing companies you could use. You just send the pdf to them and they send you the book! They also usually have many options such as full color, paper weight, binding etc. I’m sorry I can’t recommend a specific company, I would just do a search for printing homeschool curriculum and see what comes up :)
