FROM THE PUBLISHER:
In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France...but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.
Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can...completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others.
With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

I just finished her last book The Women about the nurses in Vietnam. Is the most descriptive book about the war, the nurses, doctors, medics. So emotional, it got to my soul, finally a book about the brave women that were not accepted as veterans. I was a foreign student at 15 in the USA, and my first impression at the airport was seeing American soldiers being insulted and spat at, I was horrified, being a foreign made me think if the do their soldiers ,what can happen to me. Of course I was very much looked after by my college friends. Years later in living in Korea with my husband, on a business posting, I wanted to do something for the young American soldiers and was trained as an American Red Cross Volunteer at the military hospital where some of the soldiers were brought at the end of the war. Highly recommend this book and hope a film is made to honor American nurses ,red cross, that served in Vietnam, that were denied the status of veterans including for mental health.

Fabulous book. I'm reading it for the second time and can't wait for the movie. I'm an Army veteran and have known a number of WWII veterans and listened to their stories of serving in Europe. Have also visited France several times and while visiting Normandy saw the history of what happened in France.

Wonderful and captivating novel. I listened to the audiobook thru my local library. Public libraries are libraries are filled with great treasures . My parents who were both from Europe and lived thru WWll , my father was from Poland my mother from Germany. Both went through horrific times, however , my father couldn’t talk about them. He was in the Polish resistance having been wounded and captured by the Germans sent to 3 different labor camps each attached to a concentration camp where they were starved and did hard labor. When he was liberated near the end of the war , he was near death having typhus and suffering from extreme starvation. He couldn’t talk about any part of it except to say the Russians would have killed them immediately. The Nightingale helped me see some of my father’s story.
