Howe, Squire, Wakeman and Bruford - the best line-up of rock history. 'Heart of the Sunrise' display this without a doubt, although I think that the drumming of Bruford excels.

@@boostedlss731 With all due respect for KC, the main contender for top prog rock band of the 70s, and a band i really liked too, musician for musician YES would still come out on top. I'll grant you that Fripp and Howe probably were equals, but Greg Lake while being a great vocalist as a bass player didn't even come close to Chris Squire. They didn't have a Wakeman either. Great band though. And if this should turn into a debate i think the same things applies to Pink Floyd and Genesis too. Both great bands, but for sheer musicianship no match for YES either.

In the summer of 1788 Mozart wrote his last three symphonies in the period of two months. That accomplishment has been called the greatest act of compositional genius in the history of music. Yes is definitely not Mozart, but that period in which The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge were produced ranks among the greatest feats by any musical group in the modern era. It was such a special time and Yes was at their best.

Love, Love, Love this song. Chris Squire was the Master Class of bass playing. I didn't always know what Jon was singing about, but it didn't matter, his vocals always made me feel so good. Bill Bruford has always been a drumming favorite, whether it be in Yes, King Crimson, UK, or solo. Steve Howe, always has tasty guitar licks, whether they be acoustic or electric. And Rick Wakeman was a wizard with anything with keys.

Nice to see you grooving through Bill Bruford's drumming; he makes this special and a bit extraordinary. Kudos on your dissing the dissers! Ok, this album...I was in first year high school and a friend asked me, " you want a record?", (like a 13 year old is going to turn down a free anything), so, of course, I took it. Apparently, he didn't like it. I was fascinated by the cover art and took it home to my Dad's pretty cool home stereo system. I knew Roundabout from the radio, but that was it. The whole album blew me away. And this song ending it??? I exposed my co-rocker friend to it, and he got hooked. I bought The Yes Album on 4 track tape for Starship Trooper, and likewise, got exposed to everything else. Then he went ballistic, and bought a Yes album every week until he had them all. Ok, I'm cool with that. We learned the whole catalogue together. Good memories. We used to learn multiple instrument parts and jam along. I confess, I was tapping the crap out of my desk while listening with you. I nailed about 95% of it (hey, been a while). Love to you and your family.

Hi Kristin. Well I'm a bass player and this is my all time favorite Yes song. It's quite something to play. A definite workout. Also did you know that Geddy Lee of Rush played with Yes at Rock and Roll hall of Fame. Geddy was influenced by Chris Squire which is why Geddy played a Rickenbacker. Chris Squire made the Rickenbacker 4001 desire-able for bassist to play. And fyi it was Paul McCartney of the Beatles that designed the 4001.

Yes opted to do longer pieces to expand the music, and given people a broader experience, so there are movements, and transitions that would normally be found in an orchestral arrangement. When you get to Yessongs, all the Live versions of these songs, you will be amazed at not only how well they play them live, but they enhance them and really blow them up like a live versions should. You should just jump into the Yessongs version of "Starship Trooper" to get a taste of what I mean.

Prog (Progressive) Rock followed no rules, no templates. Movements, Time Signature Changes, Experimental Instrumentation, etc. Stuff you didn't hear on mainstream radio. The level of musicianship within Yes is second to none. They inspired many, many artists (like me). Geddy Lee of Rush drew his inspiration from Chris Squire. Something I would like you to realize is at this period, songs were part of albums. While great songs could stand on their own, when listened in context with the album, as part of a story, the songs are elevated to new heights. Pink Floyd is a prime example. Thank you for keeping the music alive.

If you think about it, it should remind you of another super tight drummer & Bass player relationship, Geddy & Neil of RUSH! Yes, "nothing overpowers the other". That's exactly correct. Even Jon's voice is nothing but the 5th instrument. A tip: this song is about a thing called "variations on a theme". Yes accomplishes this in many different aspects in this song, not just in the "dictionary definition" of what that means musically. They use the same theme to construct different soundscapes, build up and take down tension, express different moods (this is more noticeable in the way Jon sings the same lyrics with completely different moods, building up, and up to the music climax, followed by a sharp drop in tension after which we get a final reprise of the theme). There a book by a maestro written about this song alone.

Keyboardist Rick Wakeman is most known for being funny but I can think of examples of nearly everyone who's been in Yes over the years being funny and witty. I heard an interview with bassist and founding member of Yes Chris Squire being interviewed along with his first wife in 1980 and the two of them and the interviewer all joke around with one another. At one point in that interview Chris says he jokes around most of the time but music is the one thing he does take seriously.

Yes, and other progressive rock bands of the early seventies (and today), were and are attempting to elevate rock and roll beyond its humble origins. They are creating art. Some people get it, some don't. It requires patience and a willingness to switch gears on a moment's notice. But...once you've gone down the rabbit hole, you'll never listen to music the same again. Prog-rock SHOULD be about musical experimentation, and the best prog-rock bands (such as Tull, Genesis, and especially Yes) do just that, trying to expand the field that is considered music. Your comment about their songs sounding like different bits of songs put together reveals that you are sensing their main form of experimentation. Yes particularly loved playing with TIME changes within their songs. While typical songs are in one time only, or perhaps do a second time at the bridge. Yes does a dzn or more time changes in their songs! IMO, it's one of the key reasons that their music is fun.
