My 9 year old twins and I recently found your channel when looking for lunchbox packing ideas. We love your videos. I love that you're a real mom, making real meals without making anyone feel shame for not being an overachiever with character cut sandwiches and fancy picks for their fruit. 😄 I grew up calling it Shepard's Pie with beef in it too. It's habit that I still call it that instead of Cottage Pie. I have autoimmune issues and my husband has celiac so we eat gluten free. I am looking forward to trying some of your recipes with a gluten free spin to them. With four kids in activities our dinners are often rushed as well. It's all going to the same place and looks delicious anyway! 🙂

I've looked forward to your post. You never disappoint. My mother always used bacon grease for her gravy. Kiddo and puppy approved! She'd help wean our boxer pups with it. I always put carrots in my chicken and dumplings broth. I also use a can of cream of celery and sometimes... a green onion. My mother in law rolled her dough. To me, that's not a dumpling. I've used instant potatoes to thicken broth before and that works pretty well. Who doesn't like a potato? Thank you for reminding me of the classic meals we all love.🐔🥕❤

A little tip for thickening your chicken and dumplings without losing flavor is to make a roux of equal parts butter and flour and cook it together until you have a nice golden brown to cook the flour and once you put it in your soup/stew it won’t taste like flour. I do this all the time when my gravy is too thin.

What about making Mac and Cheese putting it in Thermoses, Grapes, sm Tomatos in individual baggies, Fruit, Cheese cubes and Crackers. Another idea is Sandwiches with Tomato Soup in the Thermoses with a few Carrot Sticks, String Cheese and Crackers to fill in . Try making your biscuits with Pioneer flour, real butter ice cold and buttermilk. Girl they are awesome! I freeze my butter and cut it up in tiny chunks, then work it into the flour leaving it chunky and then add buttermilk. Those chunks of frozen butter create air pockets of buttery goodness

also we do the roast beef as well, though we call it 'hot roast beef' and it involves a closed sandwich (bread on top like a real sandwich) and gravy poured over the whole thing. also we use chuck roast not deli meat. but it is a family fave! works for any meat though--hot turkey sandwiches are a staple after-thanksgiving meal to use up turkey.

I’m English and have never seen dumplings like that. Where I’m from suet (kidney fat although Atora do a vegetarian version which I always used) is used in dumplings, makes them light and fluffy. Would try this but husband hates stews (but likes curry I have no idea what the difference is other than spices!). Gotta love fussy men and kids 😂. Biscuits in the UK is what you dunk in your tea (probably your cookies). Amazing the different terminology with the same language. Loving your videos.

For the open face sandwich, toast your bread. It's so good. My granny called them Northern SOS. And SOS, for anyone who doesn't know, is white cream gravy with sausage or ground beef in it over toasted white bread. My dad liked chipped beef in his gravy, I don't. You can even have potatoes as well. SOS stands for Sh*t on a Single, which it kinda looks like. Poor people food as granny would say.

Watching you make gravy reminded me of my younger sister, she was newly married and wanted to fulfill a dinner request from her hubby, Sausage gravy. She had watched our Mama make gravy for years so how hard could it be right! Well she tried and it was a disaster she fed it to the neighborhood dogs. After about four gravy failures when she called the dogs they hid so she dumped the next few failures over the railroad so the hubby wouldn’t see them then started worrying she would derail the train and gave up! She did finally learn to make an awesome sausage gravy. But often wondered whatever happened to all the neighborhood dogs!😂
