My experience with masking fluid is that it's like oil and vinegar salad dressing. The masking fluid repels the water. Using soap makes it easier to clean your brush, but it can partly act like an emulsifier, mixing the fluid and paint together in one goopy mess. It can be beautiful, but don't expect any control, lol. Many soaps are designed to bond with dirt and grease, then rinse away taking the grime with it. They don't actually "clean" the grime, they just make it slippery so it can be flushed off and down the drain. I suspect that the type and brand of soap needs to be very specific. I also need to remember that painting a lot of water over the dry masking fluid means it will pool on top or run off the edges, adding to the amount of liquid. If an area is half covered in masking fluid and I paint over it normally, it often ends up with twice the needed water/pigment on the exposed part. One trick I use is to blot the masking fluid as the paint beads up, taking it out of the equation entirely. If I don't, the edges around the masked area can end up darker and sharper looking, or do odd things with flow and drying. That said, it can be a lovely effect, especially when you let loose instead of trying to control exactly how the paint responds. If you want nice clean lines and very white areas, use the masking fluid straight from the bottle, on dry paper, and applied relatively thickly. I have only been successful when using a cheap or old clean brush, and synthetic bristles are a must. I don't expect to be able to use the brush for anything else after that. I have also had good luck using the handle, toothpicks, and other various items from around the house, and even sponges and stamps. Many people like to use ruling pens too, but anything works if it doesn't scratch the paper and leaves a thick enough layer. My biggest mistakes have been leaving it on for weeks so the paper was yellowed when I removed it, and trying to rub it off with fingers that were not as clean as I thought. I finally bought a "masking fluid removal tool" at the art store, which is just an eraser as far as I can tell. If your paper is completely dry, it's easy to remove. You can then soften the painted edges with water, add more paint, or whatever your heart desires. I have only been partially successful with using masking fluid over painted areas, as wax is used as a resist in batik. I highly recommend testing it with every single color, as it can pull off some of the pigment, similar to lifting. Don't spread it around on the paper agressively, but rather just apply a light layer without disturbing it much. Masking fluid can be intimidating, and needs to be played with a bit to understand, but it's absolutely worth it. It allows for a great deal of precision, but also for a lot of happy accidents. I can't imagine not having it in my supplies, and it's really fun.

I ordered the empty botanical theme palette, and it's awesome. The cover design is subtle enough to keep from being distracting, but much less modern and antiseptic feeling. The first two pallette I bought were plastic, and the mixing areas stained immediately. Also, one of them had areas for paint on both the top and bottom, so you had to wait for them to dry before closing it. This palette not only solved those problems, but also allows me to flip the lid shut whenever my cat is determined to step in paint or shed all over it, lol. I only have two tiny criticisms and hesitate to even mention them. First, the rose gold is gorgeous, but combined with the silver of the lifting clips, seems a little odd. I would make it all one color of metal, but others may like it better this way. Second, I don't like having text on the cover, but that is just personal preference. I really appreciate that it is just a short, cheerful phrase and that the name branding is on the back where it belongs. Overall, I would definitely buy it again. Being able to rearrange the color pans is awesome, there are good mixing surfaces, it holds a ton of colors while not bring bulky, and I enjoy using it. The price was also very reasonable, and I would have saved a lot of money by buying this quality item in the first place. ❤

One thing about the masking fluid that I don’t think anyone has mentioned yet (apologies if they have), is that the paint/ink can pool on top. Because the paint/ink doesn’t adhere to the masking fluid in the same way as it does to paper, when you go to lift the masking fluid off you can end up with smears across the work from the pooled colours being pulled onto unprotected areas. Care is definitely needed! It is probably a good idea to blot the masked areas before trying to remove the masking fluid and possibly also whilst working, in order to minimise the amount of pooled paint/ink. People might also want to be careful with how they remove the masking fluid, rolling it onto itself as much as possible rather than dragging it onto areas of unprotected paper, in order to minimise the chances of smearing … which is, of course, way easier said than done.

The day that everyone started posting videos about these they were no longer available anywhere. All gone. No magic for me! (Until they restock, lol)

They will :)

I ran to find these to buy, and I can only find them for $35 on ebay. Where are they for sale that's not ebay? Is that even a fair price? Their other small sets aren't that price.

I have a link to them on Amazon in the description here. They retail for $25

@@KristyRice Thank you. I went and ordered it, I don't care if I have to wait weeks. It's weird that it doesn't come up on amazon if I do a search for it, but it does from your link.

Whoa! I cringing you dipping those Fave Brush (by yours) in Masking Fluid 😩😫😵💫 ....even with soap. Sorry, but I would only use "bad brush" I don't care for to use for "painting masking fluid". But you're braver than me, 🤭😆😂. But oh so looks great! I ordered this Kuretake Granulating set myself on a whim. But I've been sorta mixing W&N Granulating Medium on other Kuretake paints and "non-granulating" Watercolors. ❤❤❤❤

I retired that brush to masking only now lol!!!

I haven't watched enough of your videos to know if you would be bothered by this or not so let me know if it does. At first I thought it might be another language. 😂I was able to translate just fine but in case you wanted to fix some typos; here you go: Granulating watercolors aren't a new thing but what Kuretake has done with them is indeed NEW!
@KristyRice7 ай бұрын
Ohhhh No I've been using granulating (well forced granulating paints if you will for ages) but I do feel as if what Kuretake created is new, even compared to Supervisions :)

@@KristyRice Hunh? I was just pointing out the typos in your video description. lol Copied from above: """Granulating watercolors arebt a bew thibg but whst Kuretake has dine aith them is indeed NEW!"""

I see you fixed it but IDK if you were bothered or not. I hope not. 🙏
