I really enjoy using these paints, but there are significant differences you should know before you consider purchasing these paints. They behave very differently than traditional watercolors. In this video I will explain the differences and demonstrate as I create this charming painting. I hope you find this information helpful.

Gansai paints are meant for Eastern style painting also, Chinese brush painting/Japanese sumi-e/Gong bi/Chinoiserie. Which is done in one layer on very thtin rice paper, no scrubbing, no lifting, no wet in wet, the techniques used for those styles of painting are different from Western watercolor techniques too. They work perfectly for what they were made for! I have many different brands besides the Kuretake and I love them all!

I love my Kuretake paints more so than the traditional because of the vibrancy and resulting slightly glossy finish. I've also had great results with mixing and layering. It all depends on the individual, so I'm glad to see you encouraging experimentation as always!

Very helpful video on the differences between traditional watercolor and Japanese paints. Your comments are very specific about the features and benefits of both. I started watercolor painting several years ago, bought almost every Daniel Smith color, then discovered Kuratake paints. i use the gold often, and love its creaminess. I just added the Kuratake art nouveau set to my metallics and find their colors really enhance watercolor paintings, from transparent washes to pops of opaque color. Now, with your video, I hope to have even more fun with all of my paints. Thank you!

I love painting like this. And I think illustrative painting is not as simple as meets the eye. Thank you for a good description of gansai paints. It is different than Western watercolor. If you approach it knowing what to expect from it, your chances of success are that much greater.

Thanks for the great information on Gansi. So many youtubers wrongly state that Gansi paints are "Japanese Watercolors" and they simply are not! They also wrongly say that Gansi are perfect for beginning watercolor painters, and again, they are not! Because Gansi paints are created differently and they behave differently so they require a different skill set than traditional Western watercolor paints. Gansi are convenience paints for a style of traditional Japanese painting where one generally mixes each paint color as they paint. Gansi were created to allow a person to not have to mix their paints as they work. That is why the colors are not really meant to be mixed, but can be on a limited basis. And that is why they come in so many ready made colors that you do not traditionally find in Western watercolors. And why they have white added to many colors to achieve specific colors like pastels. Because the whole point of Gansi paints was to provide premixed ready to use paints in every color needed. People also sometimes complain about Gansi paints coming in such large pan sizes but the are not filled and you reach the bottom of the pan very quickly. Once again, they are comparing Gansi to Western watercolors and their usage to a Western style of painting. Gansi paints come in large pan sizes to fit the size of Japanese brushes, because in Japanese styles of painting they traditionally use much larger brushes than are used in various Western mediums, be it watercolor, acrylics, gouache, or oil.

I don't find any limitations, as you can use more water & they act exactly like traditional watercolours...or no water and they are very similar to Gouache......so you have the best of both worlds. I have the 48 set and the Art Neauveaux that were a fun change from my Daniel Smith, but the new KGT Granulating collection was the most fun! It doesn’t granulate in quite the same way as traditional watercolors but more “separates” and does it’s own magic overnight. The only caveat with Kuretake Gansai Tambi is that the mammal binder can cause a reaction in people with Alpha Gal Syndrome.

There is a problem with the link. Even when I click the link on the set I purchased (the link through my account), it brings up the Gem set. The Granulating set is 5 pans + an empty pan and are called “Aurora” - red, pink, orange, blue, and violet. In the pans they all look dark brownish-black.

Thanks so much for this review. I was just thinking of purchasing a set of Gansai Tambi. I think I may try the smallest set to see how I like them. I will always stay with traditional wc too bc I so love 💗 its multitudinous characteristics. I love the blending, layering and movement of traditional wcs. But I also like to try new things and change things up once in a while. And I love your artwork! Beautiful! Thanks!

I have serval sets of GT paints. The thing that I find T H E most different ( agree with everything you mentioned ) is the shiny surface after they’re dry. Because it isn’t completely consistent. Some areas are not shiny at all, other areas are quite shiny.ClaudiaSJI
@VivoVintageDesigns
@VivoVintageDesigns 4 ай бұрын
I agree. I find that where the paint is heavier, it dries shiny in comparison to where the paint is more diluted.

If you make a painting based on another artwork, you are not in violation of copyright because copyright law considers any painting to be an "original" work. If you reproduce a photographic image of an artwork, that's when you're in violation of copyright laws.

Gangsai colors are more like gouache, they have beautiful luster, brilliant, strong hue.The colors are easy to dissolve, mix with each other, are very productive and are characterized by a particularly high brilliance and luminosity. The Gansai Tambi paint set is perhaps something between gouache and watercolor. They are all translucent and some are semi-opaque, others have an opaque quality. My experience: you can paint similar to acrylic paint. It can hardly make more transparent layers because the paint looks like painted gouache. But you'll love these colors! metallics...too
@VivoVintageDesigns
@VivoVintageDesigns 4 ай бұрын
I have to get the metallics. If they work as well as the paints, I will be thrilled.

Western watercolor recipes often include glycerin, oxgall, honey, fillers so less pigment is needed, pigment enhancers, granulation enhancers and preservatives to alter viscosity or durability. Homemade watercolor recipes even say to include oxgall (animal hide product), glycerine and or honey. Granulation or flow additives as desired. Water color made only from pigment and gum Arabic is a lot more expensive. And even then, honey or oxgall (or oxgall substitute) is included.

I think some of the effects are from your paper, the stratmore 400 series in your description is wood based not cotton and it takes the water differently, I believe the 500 series is cotton, just curious how the paints would perform on Arches paper. The quality of the paper makes a night and day difference in the performance of paint.
@VivoVintageDesigns

I agree about the paper. I only use 100% cotton for my traditional watercolor. I tried both and like the look on wood based paper best...just my preference.
