Hey everyone! I hope your New Years is going well so far.
So I finally had an opportunity to take out this budget 4 season backpacking tent on a snowshoe trip.
I also cooked a Korean-inspired dinner at camp.
I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as I have enjoyed making it!
Take Care,
Ed

I bought a cloud up 2 from collins outdoors 3 months ago, the price is much cheaper than Amazon, free tax. Used 6 times and everything is good. Naturehike gear has always been a good budget option.

Nice overnighter. I’ve done one legit winter camping trip at -4 deg F and that was really cold! I had the 3 piece army sleep system and a 2 person USMC Combat Tent. I boiled water before bed and filled a large water bottle. That went into my sleeping bag and kept me warm for hours. The worst part was using the bathroom in the middle of the night. 🥶 I took a veteran winter camper’s advice and pee’d in disposable bottle, as to not go outside. That also was sealed up tight and went in the sleeping bag for warmth. Best advice ever, besides not drinking too much before bed. Good Luck! ~Kirk

kirksfilms I think peeing in the bottle and using it for warmth is one of the best pieces of advice out there. It really does suck going outside of the tent , (let alone leaving the sleeping bag) when it’s freezing out. Cheers!

I can’t believe you didn’t say it. “You sweat, You die” Digging a sink hole for all the cold air to go into was a good idea the Inuit’s have being doing it for thousands of years so it obviously works otherwise they would waste the energy on it. The tents seems good for the money, seems very capable, nice and flexible to deal with the wind and snow. The coldest I’ve ever slept in a tent was -12 degrees C and it was proper wet snow and it was blooming miserable. But the worst winter camp I can remember a weekend trip where it got down to -6 I had the bright idea of fitting a space blanket to the ceiling of the inner tent the theory was to keep some heat in and in the morning everything was soaked due to condensation dripping off it, called the second night off and went home, my sleeping bag was ruined and I ended up throwing it away, clumps of down stuck together in the baffles. So your idea of the outer gore tex shell was a very very nice touch and can save you hundreds of pounds. Do you not take a cool bag/box with you to stop your water and food from freezing? Waking up and reaching for a drink to find a frozen bottle isn’t what you want in the morning. Take care and stay safe.

wizardorlegend well, if you sweat, you can die unless you take action! Some don’t and end up in very serious situations. As for the bottles of water, I would keep that in the sleeping bag with me and find that it’s usually warm enough not to freeze 👍

Hello Ed: Started Watching your videos when I found one on you and your girlfriend camping out using a REI Kingdom 6 ⛺️ without the garage but using a Mr Heater Buddy and propane tank to heat it in the snow. Said it worked well. I liked that idea especially since I bought one in 2016 and ended up car camping on my own. Was not at all in shape to do that, had expected another 1-2 people who bailed on me. But you see, my problem was weight & age, over 300 lbs and 76 yrs old, 😆 and an emergency space blanket saved me, it got cold at night & I couldn’t get into my barrel mummy bag. Plan to do more camping this summer, getting weight down and maybe get an old man to go with me, lol. Thanks for the videos!

Thanks for the review. I have strongly been considering this tent for 4 season camping in Texas. Btw a good hack for eggs is cracking them back home and pouring them in a small thermos or widemouth bottle. Usually the yolks are intact and you don't have to use any padding.

Nice video. Try using a "Heatsheet" emergency blanket. The older 5' x 8' are very durable and quiet. I had to use one inside a sleeping bag 12+ years ago. It survived the night and didn't keep waking me up. The older mylar type space blankets are noisy and shred easily. Keep enjoying the outdoors. Good Luck, Rick

My wife and I love Korean ramen while camping. Neoguri spicy seafood is a favorite, we add some carrot and peppers to it, sometimes broccoli, mmm! How has the tent held up since? Have you had it in any bad wind storms? I never want to be in a storm, but sometimes you're in the alpine and mother nature decides she doesn't give an F about you. When that happens, the peace of mind in knowing your tent will hold up and you can sleep easy is beyond priceless.

Liked the trip, the food and the tent. It looks somewhat like a Hilleberg tunnel tent. Theirs is the true standard by which others are judged They don't have a snow skirt either. For the money that tent is pretty good. A Hilleberg tunnel of that design and size will cost over a K buck. Nice work my friend!!!!

Great review and testing. Though the tent was advertised as a 4 season shelter, It's not. The true application is 3+ shoulder season. But yeah, if you watch a few of our mates over in England and Scotland where the weather is gnarly as is the terrain, you can gain some perspective as to the capability and durability of this tent from their lens. I live in Flagstaff, AZ, and plan to purchase this tent over the Cloud Peak 2. Again, thanks for the video. Peace!

Hey good vid thanks. I've got a naturehike tent that is a cheap copy of the big agnes fly creek. Well made, works well. It's not good for strong wing though and I've been looking at their copies of the hillebergs, like this one. Glad to see this review. I want to see it covered it snow though. I've been throwing jerky in with the water and some dried vegies so they all soften and rehydrate. I let it all sit for a while and then reboil for the noodles. I've just discovered that chili oil stuff with a stern looking lady on the label - going to start taking it on hikes! This snow hiking looks fun BTW - a few extra things to do but endless snow to freshen your drinks!

Nice video Edward, that Ramen looked really good! yeah that is a bummer that the tent didn't have the skirts, that would have been almost perfect for a 4 -season tent, looks like the Hilleberge design. Like you said, too much mesh, wonder why they did that. My only 4-season tent is a Eureka K2-XT which I got many years ago. Nice tent, wish it was just a bit bigger. Supposedly they used these tents on Mt. Everest at that time (early 90's). Geodesic dome style. Kind of a pain to set up.

Great video Edward! I went camping last winter up at Winnemucca Lake (9,000+ feet). It was in the lower 20s in the morning in a three season tent. Not the smartest thing I've done. Lots of condensation. It was super windy and it snowed a bit overnight. Lucked out that the tent didn't collapse. I seriously need a better tent. Maybe this would work if I stack the snow up as you did? Great review and story. You have come a long way from that first backpacking trip!
@KrokemOutdoors
@KrokemOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Maryann Hazel thanks Maryann! I’ve tried winter camping with 3 season tents and condensation is definitely an issue. Sometimes it will exist in 4 season tents as well, but so far this one hasn’t been too bad. If you do decide on this tent, I would definitely recommend packing snow around the edges of vestibule, especially if you’re expecting heavy winds mixed with snow.✌️

For a minute I thought you had the stove in your tent. But I see that you didn't. That's good. No tent is fire proof. You had it in between the tent and vestibule. Which is okay. I would not call any tent with a mesh inner a 4 season. Not to say it's a bad tent. Better ventilation than a true 4 season. I like the fact that you can completely open the back wall. A true 4 season is overkill unless the weather is really bad. This tent is much more versatile. I have a Hillie Nallo GT 3 person but I just ordered this tent for milder conditions, which for me is most of the time.

Edward Shin , I'm going Little Lakes Valley Trail. It has a chain of Glacier Lakes best for beginner backpackers. I did a day hike there last year but im really anticipating Feb 1, the starting bid for permit to hike Havasupai Falls. I'm hoping I can get one.

Nice video ! A tunnel tent model is great for camping in the snow like you show here with the footwell. with good winter camping skills you can use a budget tent, although it still can be dangerous in extreme weather. A lot of budget tents use glassfiber poles; these will break in freezing temperatures ! Don,t use those, use aluminium as in this tent. B.t.w. Naturehike claims this is a four season tent.... It is not. As you show here; this tent lacks 'snow skirts' and it has a mesh innertent. What stakes did you use ? if you want to test extreme conditions you need special snowstakes or anchors and you should us all the tie outs... Again, great video and thanks for posting !
@KrokemOutdoors

It's beautiful up there. Seems like a legit tent for 3 season. Maybe when there's not much snow it would be better?
@KrokemOutdoors
@KrokemOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Jeff Smith it was still decent with snow. I’d say for the price, it’s a decent 4 season (but not extreme winter). But as a 3 season tent, solid. But it’s not a free standing tent, so you’d need to make sure there is soft ground for the stakes

@KrokemOutdoors
@KrokemOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Steve Fontaine hey welcome! So for pitching tents in the snow, I bought snow stakes separately. They help the stakes stay put in the snow and the lines planted. If you only have the stakes that come with the tent, I dig a hole about 6 inches deep, the plant the stake, then bury the hole with snow and step on it the pack in the snow. Works like a charm.

@@KrokemOutdoors Take a half-dozen small zip ties. Find some small branches and break them into 10" sections. Place a closed zip tie in the center and run your guy line through the loop and back to a trucker hitch above the snow and bury the branch. You can retrieve your line easily. Oh, and retrieve the zip ties too.

Is condensation a problem in this tent, I'm thinking of purchasing this one instead of Fjällräven Abisko Endurance 3 because of the price. I just don't get, why the inner tent is all mesh on the upper side. Usually 4 season tents (or any tent that was made thinking of inside condensation) would ideally have a waterproof fabric in top of the inner tent instead of all mesh. I was thinking that I'd sew a removable nylon sheet on top of the inner tent, so any condensation on the outer tent underside would drop on it and not through the mesh... Any thoughts on that? 😁
@KrokemOutdoors
@KrokemOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Markus Korhonen good question. I haven’t had any condensation issues, and it’s probably because the top portion is mesh. With that, there is better air circulation in the inner tent, the only trade off is that it does not retain heat inside the tent as well.

Edward Shin Thanks I often think 4 season options differ when a truck is near by or the tent owner is not responsible for loved ones or friends, or pets also in the tent Remote camps when only the tent may very well mean life or death in some horrific weather wind event is when other proven tent options may be best- Just sayin- Great channel

Art M for the money, definitely. But only if you plan on using outside of a blizzard or windy conditions, since it doesn’t have a snow skirt. Also, since it’s not a freestanding tent, there has to be ground where stakes can be hammered or pressed in. I enjoyed the livestream too! Katie and I were just talking about how great the people were in the chat room. BTW, I’m making you a mod there just in case.
