I just played my first game with the new codex and this detachment is WILD. This video helped me set up some nice combos. I've never played a game with Tau where I was able to control the midfield objectives like this. The Warshaper with root carved is a character KILLER! Join the Hunt is so good.

I wish A Trap Well Laid worked like you described it, but unfortunately it has to be used in either the shooting phase or the fight phase. So you wouldn't be able to hit a unit with the Lone Spear in the shooting phase and then benefit from the stratagem for the Carnivores in the fight phase. That's where I think 5-model Hound units might work if you want to use the stratagem in the fight phase, to tag an enemy unit first.

Hi, Thanks a really insteresting video. I was also thinking that there is things to do with the Kroots. I jus have a question, why chosing HH against SkyRay for "autonomous" anti véhicules ? With path finders SR hits on 3, with one reroll, and will wounds on 3 full reroll. I was thinking that the fact they delivers more shots make them less dependant of the invulnerable save of the opponent vehicule/monsters (I see many vehicules with invul RK, IK, Monolith, Norn, C'Tan, etc). An even more shosts are also against full elite army like custos. What do you think about this ?

Hammerheads are better than skyrays because they have higher ap and damage plus they come with 2 seeker missiles which makes them a skyray for one turn.

Great video, thank you! How many normal kroot did you start your list with? I only own 60 kroot + 20 kroot farstalker, do you think this is enough for that concept?

I mean I found 80 standard kroot to be great and then added 20 farstalkers. If you had 60 then it might not have enough bodies to keep the train going.

Once the carnivores die though the raw says the characters split off into their own unit, so there's ambiguity there

14:20 Out of curiosity what leads you to think you can refund Join The Hunt with the war shaper? By my read the stratagem can only be used when the unit has been destroyed, at that point the war shaper is no longer attached to the unit and can't target the carnivores for the refund. The warshaper can bring himself back solo for free if for example you've gone the whole battle round without having a good use for the War Leader ability. Not a bad use for it especially if he has the precision enhancement

New player here, one thing I’m confused about is when you mention the 20 kroot blob, it sounds like it’s one unit with 2 characters attached to it, is that right? Or is it rather, they are just two 10 kroot units that are basically moving and shooting together?

Question and no one seems to have an answer for me so I hope you have a chance! Are the kroot able to guide, target and shoot? If you read the for the greater good it says 'if your faction is Tau Empire, they can work in teams of two..." So to my determination and understanding is yes, they can! can you please clarify. I brought this to the attention of some people at my local store and they seem to agree as the wording allows it.

No they cannot, Look at the abilities section of he datasheet they don't have "for the greater good"

GIZZLY FEAST! Use it in the opponents turn! If they ever foolishly charge your units to try stall them, or get really unlucky with an actual threating unit, if they die you can use the strat. your unit can then move in your turn, to battleshock the maximum amount on enemies in their following command phase, heck of a delayed effect but imagine a 10 inch move squad that just killed some chaff thrown at them...

Something that I haven’t seen anyone mention yet, is the solo war shaper with root carved weapons that can revive itself for free. The strat keys off [kroot infantry] and stated the strat “doesn’t bring back characters to attached units”

How do you reliably get turn one homers in opp’s deployment zone? Particularly if they go first and your scouting needs to be a little cagey

Kroot hounds (on certain deployment zones) and also farstalkers can easily get there with infiltrate then I stage other units ready to do it again and again. Then when turn 3 comes about bringing in kroot units from reserve when I've spent 2cp to regen them.

I think the only way you can get the unit back for free is if the shaper and unit are all wiped out in the same activation, that way they're the same unit.

I normally use mechs for my Tau, but those hounds along with a trail shaper are good for ambushes and assassinations behind enemy lines. Stealing capture points early with piranhas makes your opponent have difficulty advancing.

Is there anywhere in the codex that says kroot don't have "for the greater good"? So they also use guided/spotted in the kroot detachment?

A unit needs the Faction Ability FTGG to be able to use the army rule. Kroot and vespids just dont have that faction ability so they cant use it.

@PurgingParrot they have the t'au Empire faction keyword though. I suppose it reflects the fact that they are the official auxiliary rather than unofficial kroot mercs, so would be supported by the T'au as a whole with markerlights, access to main t'au units etc?

@@philipjohnston4291 If you go into the app and go into the datasheets of a normal tau unit, under the abilities dropdown you can see “Faction Abilities: FOR THE GREATER GOOD”. Now go into any kroot datasheet. They do not have that faction ability.

@@philipjohnston4291 They do have the Tau Empire keyword yes. However they need to have the ABILITY to be able to use the army rule FTGG. Understand the confusion though. If you go into the app or look at datasheets, under the abilities many tau units have the FTGG faction ability. However, certain units do not. All auxiliaries and surprisingly the ethereal do not have the ability therefore they cannot become guided or become an observer.

Hounds stay on the same base size, kroot are now on 28.5mm bases rather than 25mm so you have to rebase old kroot.

'Kroot Linebreakers' is a good rule, but the Rampagers really needed -2 AP on the fists or given something extra. I'm hoping that they are improved in the future where those ranged weapons are split into being dedicated melee. The Hunting Javelins should've been called Hunting Spears, and made to be an extra melee weapon - they should've had 'Lance' instead of the Hunting Blades. Maybe the profile could've been A2, S4, -2 AP, D2. Then remove 'Lance' from Hunting Blades and reduce the attacks to 2. I would also increase the unit's movement to 8 inches.

A couple of things strategic wise, I think you missed. Shaper free strat, having grenades now and being able to shoot after. Granade spam can be pretty amazing. Second free heroic intervention to block enemies from objects, but also Rampagers MW, wouldn't it work for this scenario?

Free strat-type abilities that don't mention a Stratagem category were FAQed to only work on Battle Tactic stratagems. Unfortunately, this means it doesn't work on Grenades, nor Heroic Intervention

@@torokokill Alright. Even if not free, it's still a good way to punch above the belt and spam MW. Can still shoot after Granades. Heroic intervention is a charge, and will trigger MW, as a Primary-Block tool is useful.

I'm only covering the basics with this video there are plenty more tricks I am revealing in my patron discord access. Key thing to note about this video is that if you spend strats on anything other than join the hunt and hidden hunters the army falls apart.

If you play Kroot and play the objectives, they will do great. If you expect them to punch above their weight, you will be disappointed. This is a very strong detachment to win primaries and secondaries, but you will lose a lot of models in the process. Sometimes people think they can only win if they kill everything.

I don't plan on owning 70+ Kroot. I do own 40 Carnivores and 10 Farstalkers. For the remaining points I plan on running a large number of rampagers and oxen + lots of characters. Shooting for around 1250 or so in Kroot + another 750 of Armor-Cracking Tau. It should be quite an effective list with insane degrees of utility and board control.

Join the Hunt has the same wording as the imperial guard's reinforcement strat. Because the strat is triggered after the unit is destroyed it's no longer on the board, so you can't use the war shaper to make it free(since he's no longer part of the unit at that point). Same way the IG can't do it with their Ursula Creed character.

It's not worded the same though as he is leading the unit and order of operations means you can as long as he war shaper doesn't die. Though I fully expect and want this to be faq'd immediately.

@@Puretideprogram fair point, the IG does specify 12" range rather than being part of the unit so a bit different. but for the order of operations, the strat happens after the unit is destroyed and removed from the table. Doesn't that mean that even if the shaper isn't killed the unit has been destroyed and he isn't part of it anymore, since the unit is gone but he isn't? Genuinely curious.

Heads up. There's a debate going on that thw War-Shaper cannot provide "Join the Hunt" strat for free. Due to the ruling of characters becoming their own unit once the bodyguards are destroyed. Therefore the War-shaper cannot target his unit for a strategem because he doesn't have one anymore. Not sure which condition takes priority or precedence here but both side make so much sense here. At least we can do "A trap well paid" for free which is just free AP+1 on our weapons.

Fyi. If this is confirmed to be true to this sort of ruling. Then, we need CP which may make Shadowsun or an Ethereal a MUST-ADD unit to ensure we get as many rezzes as possible while still being able to toss grenades and do other strategems.

Well that's not how rules work the shaper can come back for free on his own, you can't bring back his bodyguard unit for free but this is the breakdown as to why he can come back for free. The interaction revolves around the Destroyed rule on page 12 of the Core Rules: **DESTROYED:** > Throughout a battle, models will suffer damage and be destroyed. When a model is destroyed, it is removed from the battlefield. When every model in a unit has been destroyed, that unit is destroyed. Breaking it down: > Throughout a battle, models will suffer damage and be destroyed This advises that once a model is inflicted with sufficient damage it is now deemed “destroyed”. > When a model is destroyed, it is removed from the battlefield. This next sentence advises that as the model is now destroyed this triggers it to be removed. Note these are separate. The model is destroyed. Then because it’s destroyed it must be removed. **SCENARIO** - Shaper is inflicted with wounds exceeding its W characteristic. This triggers the Destroyed rule and the Shaper is now deemed “destroyed” Because the Shaper is “destroyed” this triggers two further rules: - Destroyed: Model must be removed - Join The Hunt: Create new Shaper When you play the stratagem here the model is not yet removed and is eligible to use its abilities still like many other characters (Celestine using her resurrect for example). When it is targeted by the strat its ability thus makes the cost 0CP. Both rules need resolving now. As the destroyed rule states “when” it has priority to be resolved first and so you remove the Shaper. Join The Hunt now resolves and you create a new Shaper in reserves. The interaction is now completed and players need to take a new game action to progress the game. Regards Commander Puretide

​@@PuretideprogramI looked into this extensively in the pass few days. So you can neither target the bodyguards, nor the War Shaper himself. His "captain ability" must be used when he is "in play" or "active". The bodyguard unit, once destroyed detaches from the leading characters and they therefore become seperate units as soon as the bodyguards gain a "destroyed" status. So the war shaper cannot target them. In the same ruling a war shaper cannot activate its abilities as soon as it gains "destroyed" status because "destroyed" status means out of play and stops any of its abilities from activating. Destroyed means = out of play. Therefore you cannot trigger his ability.
