I grew up on hip hop, post KRS-1 hay days but I still have absolute respect for this man. I didn’t think anyone could love hip hop more than me until I learned about KRS-1. I hope he’s gotten his flowers.

S/o KRS One standing on business and staying true to his name. This is why I call him the godfather of hip hop. This is also why I don't hold the Grammys in high regard as people do when it comes to hip hop. Just look at the winners and nominations every year. Plus what have they televised.

This is SERIOUS. The grammys NEVER REALLY represented hip hop in its purest form. For MC Hammer to turn it down? Now thats SERIOUS. Salute to MC Hammer for standing strong. Salute! 💯 I knew KRS-ONE wasnt going to be there. I just could NEVER picture him being there. Same for MC Shan. Kool Herc who STARTED this ENTIRE CULTURE was not there. Grand Master Flash and the Furuous Five also, I didnt see. The Sugar Hill Gang, with raps FIRST commercial hit, not there. Busy Bee, Nas, The Wu, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Mos Def, Mobb Deep, Boot Camp Click, Special Ed, Das Efx, A Tribe Called Quest, Onyx, Dipset, Slick Rick, Fat Joe, The Geto Boyz, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Nore, Naughty By Nature, Dr. Dre and NONE of N.W.A, NONE of the Ruff Ryders, NOONE from No Limit, and NOONE from Cash Money, and others I cant think of right now, were NOT there. Speaks volumes because all of them contributed to hip hop HEAVILY. I also notice there wasn't a PEEP mentioned about Puff, lol. That nigga is in his own house, sitting in a corner.

I am from his generation of Hip-Hop and I wondered why so many of the pioneers were absent from the Hip Hop 50 show. Maybe this is why and I respect that he is true to himself. This is why we love this man as he has never ever sold out and always raised the culture. I still enjoyed the show even though I missed many who I felt should have been there and I didn't recognize quite a few of the younger artists. Just shows how much Hip Hop has grown and evolved (and sadly devolved in some cases as KRS One is saying.). I'm glad Hip Hop is still here and going strong for the next generation.

This culture existed BEFORE "Hip Hop" was ever used to describe it .. if you are going to celebrate Hip Hop, you have to celebrate every element : bboying, emceeing, graffiti, djing... It can't just be so-called recorded "Hip Hop" music... Hip Hop is not even a form of music!

All of Hip Hop boycotted in 89 other than MOE DEE who accepted the award for Jazzy Jeff & THE Fresh Prince. The next year, it was and rappers started performing !! To harp on something so long ago is corny and he missed a chance to rep. I would’ve loved to see him rock with Latifah, Black Sheep, De La Soul The Pharcyde.

The "Temple of Hip. Hop" is global. For us not able to be where these OG's are means we are reliant on media channels to see the artists we respect. While KRS-One has extremely valid points, surely "using" the media and the Grammy's to his own advantage could have given him that global stage. As for all those that boycotted, how do we - the global audience - get to see their 50th celebrations?

It's almost like not holding a grudge from being ignored for so long is the reason to show up, but just the same to understand that you don't really need anyone else to tell you who you are and that God gave you your own journey you don't need the same people who like literally always steal things from our culture to give you a thumbs up -like as an example Starbucks representation is actually a picture of yemaya which is considered an orisha of the ocean by mostly Africans, which is like the idea itself is demonized unless someone else is capitalizing off of it . We aren't allowed to appreciate our own culture without them

And I definitely wish I remembered the specifics of what I'm trying to say, but even the way that they create statues -the award ceremonies, the awards themselves are like mini replicas of something that was stolen...like the awards are based off of something that came from our culture . I think that's the Grammy prototype sculpture but I could be wrong

He isn't wrong. How could he be? Everything he said was objectively reasonable, specifically with these Award shows. I do think that, change has to start somewhere & whether or not they called Hip Hop a fad or if they're only showing out because it's currently main stream is not relevant because right now, they NEED YOU. Not the other way around. Make the change from within the shitty system.

@@americatheghetto1949 Is that what he said or are you putting your own interpretation on it? He never said anything about killings and drugs. But if you want to talk about killings - it was hardly seen in the 80s, 90 or the early to the late 00s where rappers openly, routinely and explicitly dissed dead rappers, families or crew members to point where it was considered downright despicable even by rap standards. That was never a thing in the golden age in the crack era even when the murder rate was crazy high across the country. Did you have diss tracks like hit em up, no vaseline, Ether that was competitive and disrespectful? Yeah, but those guys had talent and like I said the disrespectfulness came in the competitive nature of mcing with rappers who actually had rhyming skills. These dudes out ain't talented just have similar beats that can get the crowd lit but nothing nice in terms of lyrical talent or even above average talent. This is why many known people in the industry left the BET Awards confused like what did I just witnessed cuz nobody know the state of music let alone hip hop.
