THE ARC’TERYX BETA AR has been my go to “when the going gets tough” jacket of choice for over a decade. Recently tho I have noticed a massive uptick in the popularity of the ARCTERYX BETA AR.
For some reason overnight the ARCTERYX BETA AR has become a FASHION JACKET. This literally caught me by surprise. I have long sang the praises of the ARCTERYX BETA AR as an outdoor jacket however, as good as this jacket is at all things OUTDOORS this jacket IMHO isn’t very good in the city.

Something I forgot to mention. I get cold really, really easy. When I get cold, my body over reacts and I feel like I’m going to die, NO BS 😂. So before I invested in this ARC’TERYX trifecta, I did tons of research. I went in and spent over $1000.00 for this kit. When I tell you this equipment works, no joke, if this can keep me warm and dry it should absolutely work for anyone else… Over a decade later, I am still very happy with this investment , and could probably sell the kit for close to what I paid or more lol. I still don’t think of it as a fashionable item tho lol. I hope everyone finds this review insightful. Thanks for watching!

@@cue03 Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing! I swear I replied to you a few days ago. I must have fell asleep before i hit the reply button. So for around the same amount of time that I owned my ARC’TERYX trifecta, I was using a pair of GTX Mountian HArdware Gloves. They are pretty good I would give them a 7/10. The MH gloves worked in most relatively normal climates. However if you got them wet and then went high up on a mountain its a problem. They do not hold in heat very well at high altitudes in my experience. People recommended to me I should try Mittens for mega cold environments. I have some GTX TNF gloves now but I have yet to test them in really harsh surroundings yet, but I will keep you updated.

I have a similar jacket and the delamination happened and I guess you have some influence being a YTer. Jealous they provided you a good warranty as they just offered 40% for my old jacket and they want me to get rid of my old one.

I bought almost exactly these three Arc' jackets about 10 years ago and I probably paid the equivalent of £1000.00 for all three from Elis Brigham in Fort William. All three are still very wearable despite a lot of wear, including winter climbing in Scotland and Wales and travelling all over the world with me. My Gore-tex jacket has started coming to pieces in exactly the same places as yours, but more extensively, solved by my wife sewing up around the hem and sleeve with her sewing machine, compromising the waterproofness slightly, maybe, but so what. It hasn't stopped be buying loads more Arc' stuff, it's just the best.

I think a big reason for people moving towards outdoor brands like Arc’teryx, outside of status, is being sick of fast fashion. There’s been more demand for durable, repairable, and sustainable clothing in recent years.
@KRTLyfe

I agree with you 100 percent! Fast fashion is such a waste of resources from start to end. I swear I will never buy another garment from H&M the quality is so bad. I am still amazed that ARC’TERYX is a cool brand now. I would have never guessed my jacket would be so trendy in the fashion world 10 plus years later. I guess I had good had good taste all along, but a decade ahead of the wave LOL!

Ive been buying arcteryx products for close to 20 years now and thus have owned alot of garments from them. The company has changed quite a bit in those years and the only stuff I have kept or will ever buy is from there LEAF line. I recently purchased an atom lt gen 2.1 (leaf) the material is completely different, the hood isnt ridiculously huge like on the regular atom lt's(can also be stored) and the overall fit is also alot better than the reg. The more subtle colours and dead bird logo are also a nice touch. Arcteryx has become a trendy outdoor street wear brand, the fit is intended for aliens bot real men (who the hell is 6'2 and wears a medium and a 32 inch waist) its crazy. Quality is spotty also. I do wish I could get my hands on one of there old dually belays parkas they used to make that jacket is amazing, was still made in canada also.

Thanks for this review! Currently I am looking for a replacement for my, no joke, 25 year old GoreTex TNF shell (back when they made SERIOUS harsh environment gear that worked flawlessly), and am thinking about dropping the coin on this very jacket, so it's awesome to hear that it has lasted you a decade and keeps on ticking, because (in essence) paying an average of only 60 bucks a year over ten years (that's only 5 smackers a month for 10 years if you think about it) for a high-end piece of kit like this is beyond worth it.

I loved my Beata AR jacket, but I'd call it the absolute worst jacket for backpackers. Here's why. I bought mine just before the pandemic (who knew?). As a result, it got very light use for two years. I only wore it in the city to go shopping and for a few day hikes in a nearby forest. Suddenly, the main zipper stopped working. The jacket still looked like new, but it wouldn't zip. That would be tragic if I were backpacking in the snow. To make matters worse, I sent it abroad at my own expense to be repaired, and not only would Arcteryx not repair it, but they also refused to honor the warranty. I have a Jack Wolfskin jacket that's nearly fifteen years old that still has perfectly working zippers and cost a fraction of the price. I've heard from people who had a good experience getting repairs and replacements, but it's not a guarantee. Their customer service is random, and at this price point, it's not worth the risk.
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe Жыл бұрын
Wow, that is such an interesting story, because my experience has been so far on the other side of the spectrum. Would ARC’TERYX give you an explanation as to why they refused to service your jacket? I do agree with you on zippers tho. Buttons are way easier to service in the field, a broken zipper and essentially the garment becomes useless. I believe my jackets have YKK zips everywhere. Do you recall what type of zippers yours had. Over the years I’ve had everything from sand, mud, ice and snow in my zippers and they never failed so I’m really curious what kind of zippers yours had.
@CoachKlipp
@CoachKlipp Жыл бұрын
@@KRTLyfe Yes, they said there was a problem with the glue that prevented them from being able to return the jacket to proper condition after replacing the zipper. My take was that the zipper never should have failed in the first place. I'm looking at the photos they asked me to send them, and I don't think it's a YKK zipper.

I'm into fashion but also has love for the outdoors so when I found this brand and it check both markers I was sold, on top of that a lot of reviews state it last them a life time so I was sold. I'm the type of person that love to invest in pieces, its an upfront cost for something that will last a while so i rather save my time having to shop every year to just buy it once and use for a long time. I felt into the trap of buying something cheap and then it doesnt work to how i want it to work or it look weird and then end up buying something to replace it and end up with a bunch of clothes, now I just buy stuff that I know will work and last in the long run it actually save u more money. I would rec everyone to buy this jacket if ur in the market for a rain jacket if u have the funds to spare for it

Just found this. I’ve had three Beta ARs in the same timeframe, 10 years. I received the latest one this week March 22. It was a warranty replacement. My last jacket was 4 years old, never washed it and eventually it started to delaminate. The latest jacket has a different cut, it feels tighter at the waste. Or my butt has grown! The Goretex is super stiff, like paper, and it rustles loud! The big improvement is a shaped chin guard. It zips up snug to surround your face. I also use the Atom LT. It’s the perfect system to go outdoors. Like everything that is niche and perfect, eventually it will be adopted by the masses for showboating in the urban environment.

Awesome review. You have a cool way about you. I have the Beta AR and agree it’s not the ‘ideal’ casual rain jacket. Arc’teryx makes better walk in the city rain jackets. This shell’s built like a tank that can withstand abuse. Case in point, though not a mountaineering experience, I was letting my dog into a back yard that had sharp edges on a chain link fence. I snagged my coat HARD on a very sharp pointy edge of metal and silently screamed ‘****!!!’ thinking my $650 jacket suffered a hole punch or tear. Looked at that thing six ways to Sunday for a long time before realizing there wasn’t a scratch. I wear it walking, camping and as an outer shell over a down coat in winter to protect my down coat from branches. Loved your review. Btw, in terms of wear and warranty, I bought this jacket as a replacement and upgrade after my 10 year old thinner Arc’teryx rain jacket needed repairs on the taped bottom hem. Their warranty is so strong I only paid around $150 for the brand new upgrade to the AR.

Yep, I totally agree with you on all counts especially the idea of wearing the Beta AR as a leisure around town jacket, oh no, not for me. The jacket is way too noisy. I have all the Atom line, the Thorium and Cerium in jackets. I just wish they would actually revise the Cerium, the medium is just too much of a snug fit, at least in the medium and others have said the same about the Cerium. I like wearing my Cerium and Atom LT under the Beta AR. I think my Beta AR is around five or six years old and still literally just as new, such a bomb-proof piece of gear, so happy to have it. Today I am actually waiting for my new Atom AR (Microchip) to arrive today, I have finally decided to upgrade all my Atom jackets since the revisions were made by Arc'teryx I think in 2020 when they made that change? Never washed in 10 years? I find this hard to believe. All the oils and all the dirt plus friction of usual wear will cause the DWR coating to fade over time. (This is completely normal) Either you rarely used this jacket or you have several of the same jacket in your closet :) Also, the reason why the glue is coming undone at the bottom hem of the jacket is due to oils and dirt seeping in over time. These jackets like any other brand need regular seasonal washing. Arc'teryx is not alone in this. Any brand from Northface down to Patagonia require regular and proper care.
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 2 жыл бұрын
Yep it is normal for DWR to become less affective, and on most of my jackets the DWR effectiveness has faded and I have had to was and reapply DWR of some sort. Like my TNF DRYZZLE jacket. I have had to reapply DWR on that jacket 3 or 4 times already in 3 years. MY Beta AR on the other hand, Ive never had to, it has never wet out, I haven’t had to apply DWR or wash it. I personally think it is because I typically wear it in colder climates where my skin does not contact the jacket. I do not use it in warmer climates, I use the DRYZZLE for tropical destinations.
@liquidSpin
@liquidSpin 2 жыл бұрын
@@KRTLyfe That's impressive the DWR on the Beta's DWR coating never wore out after years of use. Natural oils and dirt keep the coating from doing it's intended job and just natural friction from use wears the coating off over time. So 10 years of heavy use? You must have had a prototype with a new improved formula. 😂 Just kidding. I typically wash once every season with tech wash. After 2 seasons I'll add fresh DWR to the garment. Never have any issues with my Arc'teryx gear or any gear with Gore-Tex luckily. Cheers!
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 2 жыл бұрын
@@liquidSpin Heavy use is relative I guess, this was and has never been my daily jacket. I have always used mine for travel to colder climates, hiking, snowboarding, winter fishing, kayaking, MTB etc. In fact recently I was fishing in a kayak last year and got dumped on by Mother Nature, jacket didn’t wet out or even close to it. For me over a decade, I would consider that heavy use. Just for reference my Salewa GTX boots that I purchased around the same time and used in conjunction with my Beta AR fell apart literally, not figuratively about 3 years or so ago. The fact that my BETA is still going strong and never wet out after 10 years and no wash or reapplication of NIKWAX or what ever your preferred flavor of DWR might be… is kinda impressive to me. IJS
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 2 жыл бұрын
But of course I see your point if you live in this jacket and wear it 365 in the PNW or similar climate of course you will definitely need to wash and reapply your DWR of choice. What type of DWR do you use? Ive tried spray on and wash in DWR on my DryZZel jacket and I’m not impressed with the results. It is definitely not as good as it was when new. It wets out now pretty much wearing it in any heavy rain storm. Thanks

@@KRTLyfe Your video makes it seem you used this jacket in all sorts of conditions and for 10 years. Regardless of whether or not you use it as a daily jacket. I have the Arc'teryx Rush that I only use during winter and it tends to start wetting out close to the end of winter not much but in a few places. Your video I think can make people think that Arc'teryx gore-tex jackets are defective because their jackets DWR didnt last as long. I've never owned a Gore-tex jacket that didn't need to be washed for 10 years of use. Which is why I said "it's hard to believe" especially with the video of you saying you've traveled with it on many different adventures in all sorts of conditions. Don't take offense as I'm not trying to be rude. I'm glad you like the jacket. I'm very happy with my Rush and Micon as well as the many other Arc'teryx gear I own. They have made me a happy outdoor adventurer. Also I too owned the Salewa GTX high too hiking boots (circa 2017) and loved them. Felt very comfortable hardly any breaking in when it was new and was really durable. Ive since retired it with the Arc'teryx Bora GTX which is absolutely amazing. :)

Hi great review! I'm going to Iceland in the end of November and collecting gear list to buy before that. Can you tell what pants did you used for your Iceland trip, and you recommend? It's better to wear a base layer + hiking pants + soft/hard shell oraz just base layer with the shell pants?
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe Жыл бұрын
Thank you, The pants are a nylon Cotten blend from EBAY they are pretty generic and there are lots of stores that sell them. I don’t think they really even have a name. Of course you can go with 511 if you want to go with a reputable company. I get cold easy so I would recommend a decent weight synthetic or Merino wool base layer and then some sort of breathable trousers with water resistance. It depends how long you plan to stay out in the elements essentially, but Iceland weather can be brutal and unforgiving. There are also lots of shops in Reykjavik so you can find good options there as well.

Looking to do one purchase for a nice raincoat/shell debating the normal beta and the beta AR. I would be skiing/wearing it when it rains w an atomLT. Whats your call I dont mind spending the extra 200 for vents and a better hood. Thanks
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe Жыл бұрын
The vents are great when you work up a sweat but, when you don’t need them, I find them a little annoying in my arm pit. As the old saying goes, maybe it’s better to have them and not need them. I haven’t had a chance to try a normal Beta on though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

What about the beta LT jacket in the city?

I am not 100 percent certain but the goretex will probably have the same textile qualities which, IMHO aren’t the most suited or flattering materials to wear in an urban environment.

Absolutely, if you are always in rainy/windy weather I highly recommend the Beta AR. I think in some of the shots I’m wearing glasses that are very similar to the Oakley Sutro.

Which is the perfect Allrounder jacket from Arcteryx? :) And does the beta AR keep warm?
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the AR is marketed as the All Around jacket… However if I could do it over again I would’ve gotten the longer version. The SV or similar, as they are slightly longer. The Beta AR will not keep you warm alone, it is not insulated.

I think the Atom LT is the best all around jacket, I have both the regular and hooded versions. Here in Oregon my hooded Atom LT and hooded Atom AR get the most use.

After a rainy day, should i wipe of the drops on the dwr or should I just keep it full of drops and put it back in the closet?

Honestly, you should be able to shake most of the water off very easily. Any remaining water will evaporate very quickly. My jacket has never wet out as they say. Water still beads off it after all of these years.
@frankfurter7260
@frankfurter7260 Жыл бұрын
You should reapply DWR. I walk out of a thunderstorm and there is no beading on my jacket. I’m going to try to defuse a bomb with it on and see what happens. I think I will soon be dead but the jacket will be fine.

You should have sized down if you feel like the cut is too big. If you don’t need to layer much, then you can size down. This also fits looser so if you want a snug fit, size down.

I have the same problem. I used to use Mountain hardware GTX gloves but they started leaking last year. I recently purchased some TNF gloves but I haven’t had a chance to put them through the paces, so I can’t recommend them just yet. I’m considering trying the mitten glove with the pointer finger. From what I’ve read mittens insulate better.
