I've had some success with a necromancer (created the same way you did it, by adventure-moding, sneaking into a tower and then going to my retired fort) as a fort defender by placing him in a moat that'd become the only access point for invading goblins if the "goblinite vein spotted!" lever got pulled. I kept dumping corpses down there with him. When goblins came, they got torn up by traps and crossbows from above and bogged down by lots and lots of undead. Once the siege was over, I'd order the necromancer to loot the fresh goblinite and deposit it into a chute leading to the safe areas of the fort. It worked. Kinda. See, the problem was that all those animated critter bits, despite a pretty damn beefy rig, were causing the kind of framerate drops more commonly associated with late-stage kittensplosion in a 50-dwarf fort. After a while it got completely unplayable and I retired the fort. Not sure if I still have the world saved, but I imagine it'd be an interesting place to visit :P.

I believe that in fortress mode, the necromancers don't necessarily control undead that they make, but the undead can't attack your necromancers as long as it was created by one of your necromancers... not so sure about other undead or those that other necromancers create. However, this does mean that you can have a necromancer fortress, you just have to have everyone be a necromancer and resign yourself to having a difficult time with visitors, new citizens and caravans. Kinda similar to a vamp fortress in a way.

I think the answer is a private library that only very few people have access to. That way you could regulate the amount of necromancers and probably keep them there so that they don't reanimate corpses by accident elsewhere in the fortress. The biggest problem is getting the books there if you have another library. And then make sure they stay there. It will probably work fine if you just have the necromancer books dumped to a zone inside the correct library. Also those necromancers should stay away from the other libraries, so that they won't write anything there. Just in case. Then just have them enlisted to the army when needed and use fortifications.

This has really got me thinking about advantages of necromancers. I don't see much use of necromancers in hand to hand combat. Imagine this if you will... A fortress with fortifications and a corpse stockpile outside near the fort. Put the necros in a burrow inside the fort next to the outside corpses so they can see them through the fortifications. A siege happens with goblins. The corpses get resurrected because the necros can see the corpses but they can't get them through the fortifications and take down the vile force of darkness automatically. Make a few hammerlord squads and take down the corpses that were resurrected. Rinse, repeat. This sounds like loads of fun. I'm going to try this.

Dwarves will write boring books if they have no scholarly skills, but are set to be scholars. Reading in the library is a recreational activity for dwarves, so they do it when they'd otherwise be idle. So if you've got a library, but no tavern or temple, I guess the dwarves will spend alot of time reading. Were the zombies really hostile to the necromancers? That might be a bug. AFAIK zombies are only supposed to attack the living, and necromancers count as undead. Though if zombies are fighting other zombies, something weirds definately going on. Dwarf fortress defenses with necromancers and their zombies: This is just an idea that popped into my head while watching this, I've never done it. A draw bridge and moat, but instead of water I imagine you could get your necromancers in there. OR, you could have a narrow passage way that enemy traffic gets diverted to during a siege, the passage has traps that either slice them up or knock them down into a pit below which has the nercos and zombies. If the enemies get sliced up then you have more zombie parts crawling around. Sounds pretty cool actually.

You could always get two necromancer's and build a wall outside of your main Fortress. There should be two walls for your bodies to get collected between oh, and you could either make a sub fort for your necromancer 2 live in or just have it aside remote he gets sent to, so that way if you guys get invaded you can let them into the walled section, then pull the lever to seal off the area and then send your Necromancer into the sub room that would expose them to the body of the undead and just have them destroy it from there. And then you just lock the zombies up in there until the next Siege and then open the door and let them charge out and pick off the stragglers of both sides that way. Kind of similar to The War Dog versus the demon cenario I proposed

Ritually sacrifice all their followers (with the promise of eternal life), have the necro carry the last few corpses to coffins.... I'm not sure what would happen at that point. You might need an adventurer to actually raise all those zombies and bring them to battle. Point is, you have an army to reanimate when the time comes to retake your place as ruler over the living.

From what I know about this, when dwarves become necromancers or vampires, their physical stats double. So if a dwarf is superdwarvenly strong, they will be double that by becoming a necro or vamp, then they can double it again by becoming the other. Why would you want these guys in your fort? Military. Put them in separate buildings outside to train (make then very high quality) and lock them in until you are invaded.

The annoying thing about necromancers is that they don't actually command their undead. Sure, the zombies follow around the one who raised them, but the necromancer doesn't tell the zombie what to do. As such, unless you have a fort entirely of necromancers and make a safe way for children and migrants to also become necromancers super quickly, The zombies of the necromancers in the fort will kill any new dwarves simply because those dwarves aren't undead or necromancers.

So, do zombies only ignore necromancers in adventure mode? Seems like it. Guess it would be a little broken if nothing undead decided to hurt a fort of 30ish necromancers
@pauliusthemad34987 жыл бұрын
I think new update allows to make these forts easier - as mine now has one necromancer running about by accident - Used raid option that been added to get some books you see

make a zombie fight pit, throw the corpses down a hole and rez them at the bottom. then make the main entrance a retractable bridge over i the death pit. pits too deep to escape but not deep enough to kill

Give them dark steel armour and massive dark metal maces and they'll be of great use in battle.

Why were none of the reanimated corpses intelligent undead? Did they get added in a later update?

I guess those tower necromancers were more ticked off about those stolen books than they let on...

This video reminded me of a fort I had a while back. I had a zombie siege and all my dwarves got killed, except one. Turns out he was a vampire, so the zombies didn't attack him. He lived in the zombie-infested fort for a while, until I got board trying to do stuff with just one dwarf.
@kruggsmash7 жыл бұрын
THAT is goddamn amazing right there. The vampire king of a zombie fortress. I like it!
@yugiohcoolguy2 жыл бұрын
have you ever seen a dwarf who dreams of immortality try making one of those into a scholar maybe he will make his own necromancy books
@Mateo-oq7ui7 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the zombies did not attack the necromancers, just the regular dwarves. So maybe the lower fortress wasn't all that unsafe.
