This is a Great Depression Era Recipe that my Mom's family used to make. My mother's parents came to this country from Poland so they cooked Polish food. This is Krupnik Soup. It's a mushroom, barley, and potato soup. There is no meat or milk or cream in it so it's very cheap to make. It's warm, hearty, and filling.

Dear Grandma, I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and have been loving every single video. My husband and me avoid meat as far as possible, and it's very handy that so many of your recipes are naturally meat-free. Yesterday I made this soup, as my husband and me love barley, but without the mushrooms, because I have a little trouble eating mushrooms in the evening. It was a very delicious meal and in this exceptionally cold and wet summer, it was a wonderful way to warm up in the evening right before going to bed. Thank you, Grandma! ❤️

Mmmm. I remember this soup. My Polish grandmother made this when I was a child. She and my parents lived through the Great Depression long before I was born but many recipes remained. Sadly, most were lost when my mother passed years ago. I am a big fan of different soups that survived beyond those times. Soup is always my comfort food when I'm not feeling well. Soup revitalize me. I will be making this one for sure.

If you had this kind of food during the great depression, you were very fortunate. I grew up in the 1970's eating fried cabbage, butterbeans and cornbread on a regular basis. Meat came in the form of fried chicken at Grandmas sunday dinners and that was pretty much all the meat there was. I swore that , when I grew up it would be steak and pizza forever , but when I read over the restaurant menus as an adult the only appealing foods were the simple ones. So now , in my 50's , fried cabbage , potato soups and fried chicken are meals fit for royalty as far as I'm concerned. God bless you guys.

@@followurheart1 I'd love to know what sour soup is! Poorman's probably has cabbage? Or potatoes? From my Dad's side of the family, my go-to comfort soup is potato soup. Really just potatoes and onions boiled together, then finished with canned evaporated milk. Very simple, only seasoned with salt. Grandma was Welsh, so I suspect the pre-Depression original version (from the old country) might have used leeks instead, which is how I often make it today ----though I usually substitute American cheese (8 slices white, 2 slices yellow) and a splash of cream for the evaporated milk.

Thank you for posting this recipe, I have button mushrooms in the fridge, and of course barley (probably my Germanic blood) and we all keep potatoes around so I will try this out on the hubby. It sure sounds great to me, and my mom was born before the Depression and remembers life in New York city as being bleak, food wise. her memories of California after age 7 were like a whole new world where people had fruits and vegetables straight from the garden. She ate frugally all her life, and still would now but is being fed whatever the senior center delivers to her room.

@@GrandmaFeral I think that is one reason why my 92 year old mother never gained much weight, she felt it was wasteful to eat more than one should to hold body together (her words) and remembers being hungry too. I personally have eaten all her share and more all my life but I was brought up to appreciate every piece of bread we had, every kernal of rice or corn and to give thanks to those that provided them to us.

After eating "Thanksgiving Dinner #2" at my niece's house, I watched this video and got hungry again! Thank you so much, Grandma Feral, for showing us how to make this soup! I think I'll shake a little dried dill and parsley into it while it's cooking and include some toasted artisan bread to have alongside it. My mom often made soups like this for her husband and six children. She and Dad were "depression kids", so they knew how to stretch a dollar and still put yummy food on the table. Hope you and Grandpa had a great Thanksgiving yourselves.

Think rationing. Experiment. What can I add to make the meat go further? Most common is starch, so white bread crumbs, leftover mashed potatoes, cooked white rice or brown rice. Green stuff you remember may have been bell peppers mixed in because they will mush up when cooked. Whereas celery would still be a little firm when the hamburger meat is done. Of course, mix in chopped onion.

Growing up mom z'l made this with meat. She always got the bone with the marrow. I'm now a vegetarian and made it without meat. I don't boil my barley. I gently saute the cut up carrots, celery, onions and garlic. I then add the Barney. Toasting it brings out more flavor. I add cut up mushrooms and dried porcini mushroom that had been soaking in hot water for 20 minutes. I strain the liquid and then add that to the pot. I add water and 2 stock cubes. Put the lid on and softly simmer until barley is soft. Soooo good.

Thank you for sharing these recipes; I've just watched a few of your videos. As someone who loves history, it's fascinating to get a sample of the recipes that were used during the Great Depression Era. In a practical sense, it's also neat to see just how simple and inexpensive many of these hearty looking meals are, and that they could easily be adapted to taste or to additional ingredients that one has on hand. Meatless recipes like this one would be great for Fridays and Ember days. All the best!

The great depression most people made meals with vegetables from their garden, made homemade noodles. They made few ingredient meals that could feed large families. No fast food chains and they had no money. I have had this soup on many Fridays👩

That looks very good, even though I'm not a mushroom fan. Barley is very good, al the other ingredients are great. -- If people do want some cheap meat or protein, maybe a dollop of beef or chicken bouillon, or maybe a Polska Kielbasa sausage, chopped, browned, added to the soup. -- But the recipe looks tasty like it is too. Maybe a little cheese or chopped green onion as a garnish? -- I've been a Lucky Ferals fan a long time, and I've now seen a couple of your videos, Grandma and Grandpa Feral. Thank you.

Hi Welcome and thank you so much for watching my channel. Most of my recipes you can add whatever ingredients you like or omit the ones you don’t like. We love Polish Kielbasa but we don’t eat it that often. I like to prepare a few meatless meals a week. Glad to hear you are a fan of my daughters channel. All her Cats are so special and we always enjoy seeing them. They each have their own personality. Have a nice day. Take Care❤️Grandma👩🏻

True, but check another store. I discovered that my WalMart Neighborhood Market carries Quick Barley, which cooks in 20 minutes. But it's not at the Big WalMarts. They only carry the Quaker Medium Pearled Barley which takes 50 minutes. My local regional chain, Brookshire's, only carries the long cook kind. Another regional chain doesn't carry it at all. When I go to another city and stop by Kroger's, they carry the Quick kind. Yet when I go the other direction to a different city, their Kroger's carries only the long time kind, not the quick. (🤷‍♂️)

@@GrandmaFeral There is a Quick form from Quaker that takes only 20 minutes, but it is not available at all stores. I keep both at home. The long cook kind thickens a little better I think, but the short cook kind is really nice for shorter recipes.
