LIVE T/C:-19/06/2024
A number of species of soil-dwelling insect pests viz. white grub, termite, wireworm, earwings, root grubs/borers etc. can seriously reduce plant establishment and populations and subsequent yield potential. Control of soil-dwelling insect-pests has always been challenging and poses special problems in pest management. They are hidden in soil and it is difficult to detect them until they produce considerable damaging symptoms or sometimes complete damage to the crop. The problem then becomes one of applying control measures to pests that are concealed and protected in the soil below the ground surface. As it is difficult to predict the presence of such insects and the damage caused by them, also the problem of controlling them, farmers have tended to use soil application of synthetic insecticides when possible to prevent damage. This insect proofing of soil has led to the problem of harmful effects of residues, insecticide resistance, pest resurgence and failure of economic control, opening up both a need and an opportunity for adoption of Integrated Pest Management approach in the management of soil-dwelling insect pests. IPM is based on ecology, the concept of ecosystems and the goal of sustaining ecosystem functions. It promotes the growth of a healthy crop with the least possible disruption to agro-ecosystems and encourages natural pest control mechanisms.
