Blasphemous (1/2), Ender Lilies, Hollow Knight and The Last Faith are all sincere 10/10 perfect games. Genuinely each of them is in a sense the pinnacle of the genre. Moonscars is also a really fantastic game for sure, I think I'd give it like a 7 or 8/10

I've been looking for Metroidvania recommendations for awhile now. Watched a lot of videos, but yours one is probably the best. Its not just because of the games in the list, but simply because of how you made the video itself. I just started playing Prince of Persia about 2 weeks ago and I can confidently say it's one of my favorite Metroidvanias of all time. Never played a Prince of Persia game except a little bit of Sands of Time but it's so perfectly done.

only thing that really annoys me about that game is i have to go into my ps5 settings and turn off the internet to play. it tries to force you to create an account that i don't want to create, and the only way around it is disabling the internet. doom eternal does the same thing, it's extremely annoying. i really hope that sort of thing never becomes the norm in games. it likely will become common in aaa games, but i don't much care about modern aaa games. most of the more recent games i've purchased and enjoyed are indie games, prince of persia was one of the very rare aaa games i actually enjoyed. so glad we have indie devs now because modern aaa is mostly garbage and will just continue to get worse.

Great list. I would add Animal Well. It 100% deserves every Metroidvania fan's attention. What it lacks in any real combat it more than makes up for with ingenious level design and wickedly cool puzzles. Definitely check it out.

I hate how “it’s hard” is now basically the metric for how good these games are. I’m a casual gamer who works for a living and I don’t have time to master these next to impossible punishing gauntlets. Symphony of the Night is my favourite “Metroidvania” it was the perfect balance of challenge without being a frustrating bang your head against the wall experience. By today’s standards though, that game is for babies.

I like souls games but I've yet to find a single "souls like" game I really love. It's like they decided to make something even harder than Dark Souls without putting any thought into if they actually should. With that being said, most of my favorite recent Metroidvanias do have adjustable difficulty.

I am finding Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown to be pretty difficult, granted I maxed out the difficulty, but becoming frustrated is not something that people without a lot of spare time want to get into. Of course leaving comments like that makes you just sound like another 13 year old who lives inside and never sees the sun and is a tough guy online because you claim to play hard games lol. No one cares kid.

Really happy to see GRIME in here. Beautiful and monstrous world, atmosphere and grandiose music. Hoping GRIME II can deliver as well. Was hoping to see Cookie Cutter on here too. It's not outright groundbreaking, but nonetheless feels good to play. And has a *real* stand-out style. 2D hand animated and very colorful dystopian cyberpunk/sci-fi planet. Solid atmosphere too with a good soundtrack to go with it. Has five different weapons total, ranging from a big fist to an electric guitar, two weapons of which are optional to find, plus a variety of other abilities by way of "spells" and a quick push-away move that has double utility for light "puzzles". And the "spells" are powered by a meter that fills up by simply hitting enemies with normal attacks, which looks and feels good and smooth. Like a 2D beat-em-up. The lead dev, Stefano Guglielmana, been at it for about six years and only in the last two years was he able to get a proper dev team together of about 14 people. And had to learn how to manage a team. He also, according to interviews, went over more than a 100 interviews with dev studios before he found one that was comfortable with letting the product be the way it is, without interfering to make it "safer for marketing" or something. Cookie Cutter is his baby and it shows. He's currently working on making CC as technically solid as can be, and hopes to support it in substantial ways going forward. From entirely new characters and quests to full-on weapons, areas, bosses and story elements. Well worth spreading the word on and looking into.

Aeterna Noctis is both one of the best and longest MVs I've ever played. It took me 3 tries to get into it and it doesn't feel great at first but I promise you it gets so unbelievably satisfying if you put in the time.

Mint!, what an expose on a genre even though massively populated often overlooked, I myself have been gaming for 36 years and I’ve only just realised that Metroidvanias are any good. I think I mistakingly thought they looked archaic and unoriginal? I’m now playing more vintage Metroidvania games (currently Aria of Sorrow on GBA emulator) in an attempt to catch up!

Moonscars is not bad, I kinda don't like the Dark Souls Hardness because I was hoping for something... more like Castlevania. But its fun to play. The last Faith is awesome. Makes really much fun, it's not too hard and reminds me on Symphony of the Night. And the Art is really great. Aeterna Noctis is what I'm playing now. Its also fun to play, but sometimes a bit too slow. But the Characters are really good and enjoyable. Laika: Haven't played yet Afterimage is one of my favorite "newer Metroidvania" It was awesome. A lot of different abilities and a really beautiful world. Prince of Persia ... I was sceptic at first. But damn, this one turned out really great. Its awesome for fans of the old games, the even older games, and new fans Ender Lilies... I loved the first game with my whole heart and also love the new one too- One of my all time favorite Metroidvania Ori - Its beautiful, its pretty, its fun. But feels more like a plattformer then a metroidvania Carrion - Thats a really interesting game. Something new and fresh. Had a lot of fun with this one Blasphemous 2 is for me... like the first one, too much of Dark Souls.. but still a good game. I would highly recommend the original Blasphemous; that being said, if you want to get everything out of it - you will need a guide. There are so many things that you would never know ahead of time, that the game thinks you care about trying to figure out. The vague details aren't worth wasting your time on - but I would say the combat is better or at a minimum significantly different from Blasphemous 2 to make it worth your while

FIST was so good bc there were several boss battles where I was thinking I was never gonna make it through, there’s just too much going on. Then after a few attempts, progress! Then a little more and before I knew, the boss was down. I thought the gameplay was quite balanced and very enjoyable

I was going to skip the new Prince of Persia game, then I decided to give it a go, I was about to quit a couple of hours in, but then it clicked, and I was hooked. I promise it is really really good. It get way better as you progress. I am 20 hours in I don't want it to end. Give it a, if you are into Metroidvania genre of games, it is quite unlikely you won't have a great time with it. I am afraid to say it but I believe it will end up being in my top 10 metroidvania games of all time, by the time I am done with it.

Playing Astlibra right now and it's a blast, highly recommend you look into that one out of these. Not sure I would call it a Metroidvania though, at least not where I'm at, maybe it opens up more, but the gameplay is just pure fun that hardly shows down, not unlike an Ys game.

@@kschmeed I played both games the same year, and I had more fun with Bloodstained. The main problem in SotN is the backtracking and the lack of teleportation points. It's tedious, and makes it less replayable, while Bloodstained improved on that and it's much more enjoyable to pick up even after a long time, or to start a new game. And I believe you can have more builds, so it has a larger variety of gameplay :)

Oh yeah. To each his own, I guess. I've been into really dark, creepy stuff since I was really young so I got Blasphemous the day it came out (and backed it for that matter) but I always got bored with it, gave it up for like six months. So I'd start a new game, rinse and repeat at least four times but I didn't have that problem with part 2. It had me from beginning to end.

Yeap Ori is up there. New Metroid Dread is really good. It sounds crazy to say this out loud by play the new Prince of Persia game and tell me on what aspect it is not at the same level with Hollow Knight. Boss fights, puzzles, platforming (oh god the platforming), sound effects, visuals, and an actual story with voice acting. It is a through-and-through triple-A experience in Metroidvania format.

Could not get into afterimage I'll be honest with you, to be fair i didn't play that long into it so it probably gets better, but i was just so damn bored the whole time. Just started Astlibra though and it's so friggin fun, it almost gives me the same vibe as the older Ys games, it's just a pure dopamine hit the whole time, the amazing music and constant feel of progression being a big part of it

i don't know about Astlibra but i 100% agree about Afterimage, i have like ten hours and it is so long and so boring from my point of view, i just can't play it until it's done. I love Metroidvanias even if i didn't liked very much the first Blasphemous (the second one and The last faith are way better) but i just can't like Afterimage. My favorite licence is Castlevania and i just can't compare it to Afterimage. the camera angle is larger, there are combos, a competence tree (i don't know how to say it in english), souls like elements. Afterimage is a Metroidvania, of course it is inspired by Castlevania but that's about it.

I realize visuals aren't everything (at least I try and tell myself that) but I tried to get into Grime but I was bored to death by the bland, bare-bones graphic design. But watching this video I'm seeing some pretty well designed enemies and bosses. Maybe I need to give it another try.

ASTLIBRA Revision is my favourite of 2022 and after 30 years of gaming still proably in my top 10 or even top 5 games over all. But it is definitely NOT a metroidvania. It is as much a metroidvania as power wash simulator or GTA 2.

I wish they would make more realistic games that don't look like they were made in the 80s. I prefer the more polished look like Metroid Dread or Prince of Persia. Both these games look great!!
