As to rather people will pick it in the field: yes they will, if it's a nice enough bike and there's enough other bikes around as to where someone spending extra time on a bike lock won't be noticable. I've had a bike stolen from my university's bike racks where the u-lock was picked, not destroyed, but picked. The thing about picking: it's far more discrete than brute force so you can spend more time on it.

I should have explained that more. The reason most DD locks tension from the front and back is to help keep the sidebar parallel to the bore axis of the lock. Without that, the sidebar can go a bit askew. Shaking, in my experience, helps to realign the internal components after the act of picking misaligned them.

TheQuark6789 the smallest U lock that you can use is generally the best option. Then lock it in a way that it’s really inconvenient for you to open. It will be even worse for anyone trying to pick it or break it without damaging the bike. Also use security screws for everything. Either use really rare ones or make your own. For the front axle there is one from abus that you can only open when the bike is lying on the ground. This will probably deter most thieves, because it would be too much of a hassle to get. Having watched quite a few of your vids now I think this is a compliment to this lock. 1 - it'd be hard to have a crackhead/meth addict open with simple tools/simple tricks 2 - the picking tools to open it are unusual, not simple amazon lock picking search - yes I checked 3 - the body is hard to physically break 4 - though pickable - and the key wouldn't work if it wasn't - it took YOU 2x as long as normal even knowing 100% what you are doing. So though there's probably a Kryptonite engineer ready to shoot themselves - they shouldn't. IMO - and this is a layman's opinion - the only thing that disturbs me is how easy it is to set the thing in motion with that first metal bar to set the locks/initial tension. Is there some way to make that impossible, or like if clear all tension then trigger a counter - a different type of 'false gate' perhaps? That's on this lock - forgive my extrapolation please:-) I think what should be done is work out electronic lock additions to keys - like in cars how they have keys that have a chip on them. The lock could be powered by a USB mini plug and re-charged - so if the charge goes you can power it with your phone, but NOT override it. Sorry a lock with a phone to open it will be pickable for $100 to 'services' on Alibaba - all locks in that brand name at least. It needs to require the key - with the code programmed in - or it won't send an electronic pulse to open a solenoid that's tensioned to block the lock and in a way not easy to just use a magnet... (?Maybe a separate layer that if over-powered by a magnet defeats the solenoid?) That way if a key gets lost a new one could be ordered, then the code programmed in at home. And if both are lost (triple backup your files, people) - hello torch/cutter with proof it's YOUR bike to officer friendly who's there to ask you what the h--- you are doing even if he didn't notice your last three bikes stolen and the crack addict walking with them coz he was on Donut break. AND - citing LPL's wondrous, brutal and deserved butchery of the embryonic electronic locks these need to be solid metal and NOT openable with a screwdriver with the lock open and the electronics encased in Epoxy to protect them from rough handling and make hacking from outside a nightmare even if someone has the plans to the lock. Finally they need a "Key Module" that a 3rd party - namely the user - can program himself. Most would do a key encryption, I'd use an asymmetric code. So trip to Alibaba so the Chinese who will eventually make this and program it instant defeat key. Bonus to make it re-keyable so extra $ to a locksmith - and due to the electronics it could use more or less standard parts - even a lock that our LPL friend could pick relatively easily. Also bonus to put a 'button' on the key so you have to do something like hit it once, don't hit it, hit it ten times... as part of the input. So, why not just have the electronic solenoid lock designed to be not easy to defeat with an electromagnet? Coz it'll be sent to CHINA and do you think they'd not sell a drooling rapist the keys to get into a toy store that sells big stuffed animals and then a kindergarten for $100 each entry override? Here's a hint: Look up toy fails - they sent jump ropes to dollar stores pre-wrapped to be like a noose. It wasn't racist. Quite the opposite - Marx - "The last capitalist will sell us the ROPE with which we shall HANG him." If I made/make this I'd use an Audruino chipset or other pc on a chip thing coz I don't have time to design my own chip from the ground up. Guys that work with those could figure out ways to over-ride it - certainly as 99% it will be made that way if manufactured and - to cheat American workers- sent overseas. So the net will become full of 'hacks' showing how to get around it. IMO there's probably a "Wifi backdoor" that is, will be, or can be put in most of them - then special programs will be made around it. Plus - part of why I said encase in Epoxy to fight this - someone could poke just right and insert a logic probe after shocking to reset maybe to reprogram. BUT - if someone can get both the over-ride AND the key-picking - well you have other problems. Likely it'd be either A - a thug with a gun -- B - a thug with a gun and a warrant - or more likely C - they spend 20 minutes sawing with fake paperwork that they are a 'repo-man' - or just time when officer Wiggum is at a donut break again...

Which would you say is tougher/more secure ... this, or the [543] New York Disc Lock ... in terms of lock mechanism, and overall security? I know this is meant for bicycles and the '[543]' is meant for motorcycles, but either could certainly be used on a motorcycle (at least) ... Many thanks!! :)

Oh my god. It looks so easy to pick this lock... thought it is one of the safest bikelocks on the market... can you recommend a good lock for an expensive bike?
@jrd335 жыл бұрын
This lock is a good choice. Almost all bike thieves just rely on bolt cutters/hydraulic tools/angle grinders. You're not going to find a bike lock which is substantially harder to pick. If you want the best possible security then get a big Abloy padlock (such as a PL362) and attach it to a 15mm hardened steel chain. But the combination will weigh and cost A LOT. Want still more security? Use 2 separate locks (a D lock and a chain, for example). But you still won't stop a thug with an angle grinder if he really wants your bike.

Ahh Zett As John Davis said, this lock. If you want better (but less practical), hire a thug to stand next to your bike, but even a thug can easily be defeated given the right technique.

Started watching your videos in hopes of finding better bike lock. I wanted to find a lock that will keep the honest people honest. After watching your videos, I am not feeling very good. Do you ever think about the bad guys watching your videos? You could be educating the wrong people. When you document lock problem on your video, have companies responded by making improvements? Or taken bad products off the market? With your knowledge of what not to do in a lock, have companies asked for your recommendations?

If your design rests on security-through-obscurity it is not a good design.

This lock is one of the best available. Unfortunately, thanks to much improved battery technology, high-power angle grinders are available that defeat these quality locks. Not a lot can be done about this fact. You do raise a lot of valid questions though. Yes, providing info. to thieves isn't a good idea. Problem is, the internet spreads this information far too easily. It's already out there; LPL isn't sharing any earth-shattering secrets. No way to control it. Can't blame the manufacturers. They're trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys. But the bad guys have cheap, effective tools at their disposal. And laws of physics & engineering say you can't make an unbreakable lock (making = breaking essentially). So this lock doesn't need to be taken off the market. You can get a lot of information about effective locks & locking technique on the internet. Check out all that's at your fingertips. (It would be a waste of my time to reiterate it all.) Another strategy is to use two different type locks that require more than one tool to defeat. Here's my custom suggestion: The Kryptonite NY Fug lock is a GREAT lock. But it can be cut (and picked, but this method is rarely used on the street). I'd suggest taking this lock and sliding thick pipe sections over the U-shaped shackle. Thicker-wall pipe fittings would be best; angled sections for the curve. Slide some material (old tube socks) over them to prevent marring your bike. Now an angle grinder will be less effective or take longer to get through all the added material. Hopefully, the loose pipe fittings will be more likely to move around and shatter the ceramic cutoff wheel. This is what I've come up with to try to defeat angle grinders. It sucks to have to be so worried about bike theft... What we need are GPS tracking devises installed in every frame and suspension fork from the factory that would help locate stolen bikes before the grimy scumbag thieves have time to part the bikes out. Good luck, I feel ya!
