Krystal Flash Midge Emerger - Fly Tying Tutorial - Trout Fly

The Krystal Flash Midge Emerger is one of the more simple emerger patterns for trout. This midge emerger is really effective despite using only 3 materials. Krystal flash, thread and wire. Tied like a zebra midge, but with an emerging wing. These are one of my favorite midge flies for picky trout in rivers. Its so easy to tie, I can make up 20 of them, and don't mind too much if I loose some due to small tippet.

Good music is expensive to use. I use what I can use for free, otherwise it would cost me money to make videos. As a KZbinr in the fly fishing world, videos don’t usually get the kinda views that make much of anything and therefore even just purchasing music rights to use for a video costs more than I make in a video.

@@McFlyAngler I grew up on bluegrass and country music. Matter of fact my dad is practicing tomorrow with his bluegrass band! They have been playing together for over 50 years now. Sadly their health is failing some of them, and some have passed away. If you have ever seen Ralph Stanley you’ve sen my dad. People often mistook the two backstage! They could pass for identical twins. I had a pic of them together from many years ago, but have no idea what I did with it. But personally I love the music you used! 😃👍

Oh ok, sorry for that! I’ve had comments that the music is terrible, I thought this was similar. My bad! I’m glad you liked the music. I personally like bluegrass also. I used to love a band called nickel creek. Unfortunately they broke up in 2014

Thanks! Yeah for sure, fish strike it harder cause they are used to the emerging bug moving fast and away from them so they are more aggressive to strike it. Totally love it also man!

While fishing on the Bighorn four years ago, the midge hatch was so heavy that we could not distinguish our dries from the naturals. While tying that evening one in our group had some Flash Blend. I tied this with black thread on a #22 scud hook and the next two days we were getting a phenomenal number of strikes. We did miss some fish because of the small hook, but I call this the AD Midge Emerger.

newby question but an emerger should float on the surface film with it ass end hanging sub surface, does that fly float?

No, and thats not 100% accurate. I fish emergers sub surface as well. They are not always on the surface film, they start rising as well, before hitting the surface. I will sink these below a split shot at times, other times I will stick these behind a dry fly, but either time, they are below the surface film.

Another way to fish it is to grease your tippet beginning a couple of inches above the fly. The goal with this method is to get the treated tippet to hold the fly up just beneath the surface. Also, if you are fishing it deeper (with shot, say), try letting it swing at the end of your drift. This will cause it to rise in the current, like a naturally emerging insect moving to the surface. Trout will often trigger a strike.

What size hooks

Oh boy, been a long time since I made this video. Check the description section, I think I was putting the hooks in there by then. Otherwise, I have seen these tied anywhere from 12-30... they have a wide range. I would say just tie them according to your targeted river. In the San Juan for instance, size 22-26 is quite common.

+stinky felix I like bluegrass, can't please everyone. Some like it, some don't. Also, royalty free music is limiting. Hard to find many quality tracks you can use for free, so I found one that is good, and stuck with it. Glad you like the fly.
