In this timeline, the nations of the world dedicated their efforts to space exploration, the sciences, arts, and conservation of the environment. This mission is the culmination of the collaboration of long time allies following their victory in WWII. Nuclear weapons still existed, but only a dozen or so were made as much of that tech was put into power generation. Wind, hydro and solar power was in widespread use as oil and coal power plants were outlawed following WWII. World leaders knew the existential risks of climate change at an earlier time (1920) and acted in unison to protect the resources and biosphere of our planet.

As amazing as this mission is, it terrifies me that the hab modules are spinning like that to create artificial gravity, if a structural rupture were to occur (like in the event of a micro-meteorite shower or a stray derelict) then those hab modules could potentially be sheared off and launched wildly away from the ship, making any immediate chance of rescue nigh impossible.
@TDChannelKSP3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is a bit terrifying. It wouldn't be too bad going there - worst case scenario, the lander has to rescue the crew and they stay in that instead. But going back there's no real life raft. A lot of Mars plans IRL do involve artificial gravity via spinning though (or a tether) in order to improve comfort over the long journey.

Loved the mission I cant imagine how much work goes into doing that, my rockets almost cant reach kerbins orbit. But I tried to imagine a different time line for it, instead of 1960, the mission would follow the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project on the 70s, after the sucess of Apollo-Soyuz in 75, the soviets and americans decided to focus on Mars and use the resources that would in OTL go to MIR and the Space shuttle to make the Mars mission, they spend the next decade an a half developing the necessary hardware, budget and other problems cause the first launch of the program to happen on September 12th, 1990, 30 years after TD channels timeline, all other dates happen as his timeline just with a 30 years difference. Of course you can see something special happening with this timeline, on december 25th, 1991, the soviet union cease to exist while Vulcan is orbiting Mars waiting for the transfer window to earth. The two soviet cosmonauts on board of the craft receive the news but refuse to acknowledge until on the presence of a superior officer, the american coleagues decide to honor the decision of the two and continue to act as if the Soviet Union still existed inside the capsule, so from that day until March 21st, 1993, the soviet union was kept alive on that small space becouse of the 2 patriots, (movies would be made about it in the following years both on Russia and on the US), finally on March 22, Boris Yeltsin and Mikhail Gorbachev visited the quarentine facility the astronauts were staying to condecorate the 2 last soviets and relieve then from their duty, putting an official end to the soviet union.

Amazing and inspiring!!! May I ask how did you managed stress? I am designing a Moon base, and despite it being way bigger than the VULCAN, and being near home, and landed, kerbalism says it only supports 4 kerbals stress for 2,5 years. You managed to stay all that time in a way smaller ship in orbit and far from Earth (If I see correctly you only have the two habitable modules in the arms, and the habitable module and the crew cabin in the lander, right? I have also 3 habitable modules, plus 18 crew cabins!!!)
@TDChannelKSP3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! ROkerbalism stress maximum is about 3.5 years, IIRC. I'm assuming you're using ROK and not standard kerbalism configs for this. Here's how stress works: Habitation volume, pressurization, and modifiers. First off, habitation volume. There's an ideal living space of 20m cubed per kerbal. This is the maximum you can obtain - any living space beyond that is a "waste", and obtains no benefit. Pressurization is a *huge* modifier, but since you're already obtaining 2.5 years I'm guessing you have that covered. The next is modifiers. Up to 100% of the maximum value, based on the modifiers you have. You can hover over "comfort" (iirc) in the VAB planner to see what your modifier rate is. "Firm ground" is the largest modifier. Here, I have a mini centrifuge on the ship (modified part) to give me this modifier, since kerbalism can't detect the fact that I'm spinning the habs manually. You should have this automatically on a landed hab. The other modifiers I have are: - Not alone (more than 1 crew member) - Call home (has a connection to the space center) - Exercise (comes from the habitation modules) The other two modifiers you can obtain are: - Panorama (Cupola gives this) - Plants (Greenhouse gives this, though there's no official ROK config for it yet)
@raulpalomino94723 жыл бұрын
@@TDChannelKSP great. I didnt know about that 20m limit. Probably I am way above that numbers, since each crewcabin has almost 7, and I have 18 of them, for 4 astronauts, plus some Hitchhikers... Maybe I can reduce habitation, thus reducing night electricity needs

Great video, best I've seen of yours so far. Other RO Mars missions go for heavy in-orbit fuelling, but no... 550t launcher why not. Also enjoyed the unexpected Otter epilogue - really well shot & scored. How did you create the mini centrifuge for ROK to recognise the spin that you mention elsewhere - a modified cfg? Or now that SSPX is well implemented would you next time just use that instead?
@TDChannelKSP3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yup, decided to go fast and go big. Glad you enjoyed the epilogue - I thought it needed something more than just the usual fade to black after splashdown. The mini centrifuge is one from SXT that has an RO config but no RP1 config (IIRC) - I modified it to be much smaller with no habitable space, just to make the centrifuge act like one for ROK. I haven't looked too much into SSPX yet, but if there's configured centrifuges there now, I would probably use those.

Nice video, high effort. Unsure how your PC can handle that big of a vessel but good work lol

It barely does. In orbit the footage is considerably sped up - a 30 second flyby took 10 minutes to film!

imagine if nasa did that for real back then, including the added risk of a "quick trip to phobos". That would have been so insane. Do you think they could have done it?

Also you forgot the terminal velocity intro
@TDChannelKSP3 жыл бұрын
I didn't forget - it's a bit of a different format than the usual series, and doesn't cover any other missions (there were many flown while VULCAN is active) during the time period. Plus, it serves as a good standalone video even for those that don't know what Terminal Velocity is.

why have let starship end up burn up into atomsphere. could hve refuel it and reuse for other mission or turn into station
@TDChannelKSP2 жыл бұрын
The return capsule had no propulsion on its own to divert course - besides, VULCAN was out of fuel. with no way to slow down, it would've ended up in deep space.

Interesting how they 4 kerbals that landed on Duna all fit inside the two-man passenger cabin on the way back to orbit. ;)
@TDChannelKSP2 жыл бұрын
I'm using RSS/RO, so it was actually Mars, not Duna. Realism Overhaul upscales a lot of parts into new purposes, in this case the cabin was a 4-crew spaceplane cabin instead of the 2-seater of stock.

TD, may I ask how you got your boosters in space to line up perfectly parallel with the rest of the vessel? Also, it seems the arms of the hab modules also were perfectly lined up. Is there a mod I can use in KSP to assist with orbital space construction when it comes to docking in line? Grats on an AWESOME mission! =)
@TDChannelKSP2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, these dockings were done by eye - lots of mass to the boosters in particular, so docking is slow and careful. I do know of a few mods that can be helpful though: - Mechjebs docking autopilot might be able to dock at a certain angle - Docking port alignment indicator is supposed to be super helpful at manual docking - Stock KSP docking ports now have the ability to rotate a bit, so you can fix alignment post-dock. Thank you! Glad you liked it.

I’ve always imagined a solar system, where there are two earth like planets, and I feel in a situation like that space travel would advance at a much higher rate, because of their being an actual other planet that’s viable to live on, so I feel that would’ve been a great push for space technology, but since we didn’t have a other earth like planet to go to, we just quickly lost interest
