Something I see people usually getting wrong about Apollo-style missions: The actual Apollo missions would approach the leading side of the moon rather than the trailing side. They did this so they would be on a "slingshot" free return trajectory if anything went wrong (like on Apollo 13).
@MattLowne7 жыл бұрын
Yeah for some reason I forgot this incredibly fundamental fact until after the mission was done. But at that point I thought "eh, it'll do" lol
@OBtheamazing7 жыл бұрын
Did you know that only the first three Apollo missions did a “true” free return moon trajectory. After a while they decided that it was easier to just undershoot the moon and correct it with a transition burn. So it is a free return but doesn’t invoke the famous figure eight
@lostnumbr6 жыл бұрын
@Silviu Vulcan they didn't realise this until the investigation afterwards but the lem was constantly pushing them off course with its venting cooling vapor. This was why they had to make that manual control burn ( retrograde I think), and why their they was reentry was shallow and the blackout lasted so long.

Great tutorial! It's nice to see an entire mission from start to end, with the thorough explanations. I found this helpful because I struggle with specific aspects of certain activities. For example, when burning to land on the Mun, I am not sure when to start my retrograde burn. Watching this and seeing it from start to finish has helped me gauge that.
@Appolonius107 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt thanks for this. Yes we silent majority like tutorials the more detail the better, especially construction, and don't be too cynical, we don't think you are milking a lack of ideas and appreciate that you've managed to keep stock this long. You NEED to get raster prop monitor + Docking Alignment Indicator! The indicator gives you useful info to help you orient easier. That way you don't necessarily need to use chase mode to get an idea on where to move. It has integration with Raster prop monitor (Adds cool displays inside the IVA just like a modern plane) and it lets you have a camera view based on the docking port on the display. Makes it super easy to orient yourself and adjust your approach velocities. Definitely recommend. It is super cool to fiddle around with. I also suggest the "Vessel Viewer" addon for RPM. It lets you get a cool model view of your ship on the IVA display.

I play in career mode, and an apollo style mission bring back less science, it's better to keep an engin, or just fuel tank, on the moon orbite and only one module as the lander and the command pod. Now, I do it with an nerv engin that stays in kerbin low orbite, and I bring tourists with a single lander-command-refueling ship, it's very economic ! :D Sorry about my english if I made mistakes, I'm not english... Matt you manic master of the media momentum mechanism, you have produced yet another brilliant video. Not the tutorial aspect, that was rubbish, well maybe not that bad, but I'm getting off topic. The reason I, dare I say we, love your contributions are because they are extremely entertaining. I suspect a large proportion of your audience can already perform the subject of the tutorial but we watch to try and get a glimpse of how you design your ships and simply enjoy watching and listening to you. Thank you and please don't stop. P.S. My vote would be to watch you do a career mode play through (cash and science) to see how you overcome the constraints. Don't worry that other you tubers may have done this before, it doesn't matter. I have never fallen asleep watching your videos

The Boeing Staliner will drop its service module retrograde, while Soyuz does it Normal and Dragon does it prograde. I'm going to guess it doesn't really matter for Soyuz or Dragon as their RCS ports are attached to the reentry vehicle, while the Starliner has a much more limited supply in the capsule and the rest in the service module. I'm not sure whether or not there is any advantage to doing it in any way aside from that RCS thing.
@ForwardBias6 жыл бұрын
Also, you should have crashed the ascent module back into the MUN like they did in the actual apollo missions (Since the module wasn't necessary for the return home, they crashed it into the moon to get some controlled seismic activity for the sensors they left on the surface)
@kovacszsolt60057 жыл бұрын
I'd love to have more tutorials like this. If one thing I may ask, is to perhaps have a "career-mode" approach aswell. Currently this mission to the mun requires a trip to Duna/Eve or a decent exploitation of Minmus science to get the tech required. I've yet to manage an Apollo mission in Career to the Mun, mainly due to engineering restrictions. I always end up launching a permanent lab, then seperately the scientists and the rover, collect data with the buggy, wait 6-7 years (send data meanwhile) then proceed to play at a comfortable orbit around the 8ball. I'm sure there is a way, I just didn't manage to create it yet, since I'm far from good.
