KSP - Project Orion Crewed Mars Mission

Project Orion was a program which aimed to develop an engine for interplanetary (or even interstellar) spacecraft which used miniature nuclear bombs to generate thrust. Development stopped after the Partial Test Ban Treaty, which banned nuclear detonations in the atmosphere, underwater, and in space.

Not a big deal. Besides, even with the Orion Drive, the Shuttle couldn’t be in orbit for the mission duration anyway. Best case for this tech that I know is a 40-day Earth-Mars transfer.

If you think about it, the last vehicle in the Saturn family, a manned Saturn IB was launched in 1975 on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, ASTP, or Apollo 18. And the first space shuttle took off in 1981. 6 years difference. But the last piece of Apollo hardware was the Skylab, which re-entered Earth's atmosphere in 1978/9. So we can say we have a 3 year gap between the last piece of Apollo hardware and the first piece of STS hardware But in the 70's there were already atmospheric flight tests for the Shuttle. So we can say that Apollo hardware and STS hardware existed at the same time, being from the same era.

​@@Cais_man It's not about the time but that they're both operating together since the shuttle was specifically made to succeed Apollo. It's awesome but it doesn't make sense as the shuttle (as we know it) isn't really justified if Apollo hardware and programs are continued and evolved.

Great Video only thing you got rong was that Saturn v s-2 spage separation you kept the ring on the s1 stage of the Saturn V. Whenever it was supposed to be on the S2 stage and then dropped but everything else. Great video

Man i cant believe that this is just a concept, its just how nasa how would do things if the soviets won the race to the moon, the soviets and americans would head to mars! This a pretty realistic way to show this since the americans were also VERY competitive so a mission to mars would make sense.

The shuttle mod is Shuttle Orbiter Construction Kit. Also, this is KSRSS, meaning that it is only 2.5x the size of the stock system.

It wouldn’t fit the timeline because Orion drive was a concept from the 60s (and it was probably going to fly in the 80s or 90s, if ever). And I think shuttle is cooler.

There are two download links on the forum page, if one doesn't work maybe try the other? Aside from that I'm not sure how much I can help, I just installed it the standard way by merging the mod's Gamedata folder into KSP's. Good luck though!

Wait…you aren’t suggesting that the shuttle sat up there empty and uncrewed for like 100 days?

My assumption was that in a mission profile like this, the shuttle would launch with a full 7 crew members and 5 would board the transfer vehicle to Mars. Then, the shuttle would be piloted down by the remaining 2 crew members like on STS-1 and 2. To bring the crew home, the shuttle would launch with 2 crew members and return with 7. Not sure if it would really work but that's how I justified it in my head.
