Actually, it's much faster to land in the mountains because of greatly reduced atmosphere jelly in the way. You'll see what I mean in my upcoming entry ;)

I built a craft early on in my KSP science world, which was a ridiculous amount of solid fuel boosters around a liquid fuel engine and fuselage ("Swivel, if I remember correctly") and I could get a few km/s right above the KSC for about 30 seconds. I mainly used it as a delivery lower stage before I got any better parts. It goes up fast, but takes a long time to come back down.
