The First 9 Months: First Year Teacher Full Documentary

Five first-year teachers document the challenges and triumphs of their first 9 months in the classroom. Using camcorders, they recorded their lives in and outside the classroom, allowing us to experience teaching from the teacher's point of view. "The First 9 Months" is part of the Kansas State University College of Education's "A Walk in My Shoes" series.

I will begin my first year of teaching in the fall. I have been terrified, and excited all at once. I was terrified of failing, and not being perfect. Man, this actually made me tear up! I decided to watch this because I have to decide now which career path I want to go down and I’ve been toying with the idea of being a teacher for a while, and this really helped to solidify that for me that this is what I want to do. I really appreciate the honesty of this documentary. I'm pursuing to become a teacher here in California, and although I strongly feel that this is what I want to do, I also know that it is a difficult profession. I'm so glad I watched this documentary, its helped me so much to see the struggle as well as the rewards of being a first year teacher. She said ' if a new teacher is not successful it's not their failure. It is the failure of the admin because they did not provide them with the support they needed to be successful' I want a principal like her because I want to be supported so I can be successful and make a difference in my classroom and in all my students' lives

Money does matter and teachers DO deserve to get paid more. I hate that mindset because it is the toxic norm. I have a passion for teaching and love the kids, but I got bills to pay too. It is easier to say that you're doing it for the kids and not money but reality will hit, and you will realize the amount of problems in education itself (and not just the low pay).

this made me cry so much, teachers have a such a significant impact on our lives and even my parents remember their elementary teachers from 40+ years ago. they are the face you see almost everyday for 9 months, you will remember them for the rest of your life!

some people do not even understand all the time that a teacher puts in for just an one day schedule of classes and activities, plus the evaluation of the day that takes place in the mind of a teacher when that day is done. Picking up the classroom and setting it up for the next day as well. The stress is so emotionally and physically overwhelming. It is 10 pm or 11pm and you had to cook a meal for your family and also go through your e-mails, maybe contact some parents, exchange communication with any team teacher, and prepare for the next day. Need to also mention go over students files and documents, family matters, medical needs, making student's goals from IEP true and valid, grading, weekly Testing, Quarterly testing, and it goes on and on. But what is not FAIR is when you are rejected, when you are NOT trained properly, and when you are not validated for your great work you did all by yourself, alone and for the best of the kids.

I'm looking to be a highschool teacher, but this is still very important to me. So far, I am terrified thinking about teaching for the very first time and having the learning curve of how to engage young minds, but this fills me with confidence. We all will inevitably struggle with some kids, but in the end it is satisfying to see the children mature and grow throughout the years.

Great documentary, when the teachers were talking about their kids going away made me tear up so bad. I worked as Preschool teacher assistant and I had to leave because of financial reason and I cried so much after leaving those kids. I'm going back to school to become of preschool teacher in January and I'm so excited.

That's what you say at first. But then reality hits, and you will burnout. Don't get me wrong, it's a great mindset to have because I had the same mindset. However, there are many problems in education with salary being low, lack of support from high admin. and parents, huge classroom sizes (20-40 students), excessice amounts of responsibilities ans expectations, and much much more. And I have a passion for teaching because working with kids feels so much fun! But I do want more pay especially when teachers gotta put extra time outside of work hours. Even though I used to believe that I wanted to teach for the kids and not the pay, I have bills to pay and I believe teachers deserve a higher salary.

I'm a first year math and science high-school teacher (in NZ) and I loved this documentary!! Behaviour management: they don't prepare you enough!! Cried after my 1st last prd Friday and I'm still working things out with this class. U have ur good, bad and downright ugly moments. What makes high-school great is that each class is a new start and when u see the other class again it's a new start too and u trial and error. Parent interviews: arrived 3 weeks late and we had interviews 3 weeks later. Crapped my pants the whole week leading up to it. Saw over 70 parents in 2 days and it was great but I was soooo tired. Students leaving: high-school is a bit different. I've had about 5 kids leave across my classes without notice and some just turn up on the day. Definitely tough when they come in as we are preparing for a test. Content knowledge: this is prob more on the high-school side of things but what I've been struggling with is students who are a lot lower than they should be. Differentiated learning is so important! But it's definitely something I'm more aware of. Halloween: side note... so interesting to see. I've lived all around the southern hemisphere and none of the countries there really celebrate it. Australia doesn't even really mention it. NZ tries sometimes but na and South Africa... well that's too dangerous lol. You all look like amazing teachers and hope ur still going strong!!! ❤❤

One of my teachers recommended this video and wow it’s very emotional! I’ve always had a calling to teach kindergarten/first grade I’m almost done with my associates and will be working on my bachelors soon, and I am very nervous to start teaching - my self esteem is very low in general but I feel I truly have a calling for this. Hey Renee! Welcome to teaching! I have 2 pieces of advice for you regarding lesson plans.... 1. Most school districts provide your core instructional lesson plans. Also, look for a team that works and plans together. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Put your energy and though into delivery and evaluate where you need to tweak to help different students and their unique needs. 2. Keep your eye on the standards- what is it you need your kids to know? Is what you are teaching/activities getting them there? How do you know? Be ready to pivot when they are not getting it- that’s part of the process and addressing students’ needs is what will make you a great teacher.

1. The kids look like their having fun in the beginning. 2. The new teachers look comfy during times and uncomfortable. 3.I like how other teachers team up with other teachers and spread ideas. 4. It seems like a lot of being a teacher from setting up for the year to lesson plans. 5.Most of the new teachers seemed prepared and scared because most of those teachers are just now getting out of class. 6.Most seemed nervous on the first day of school. 7. I like how most of the new teachers were doing team building things. 8. It seems like explaining rules and procedures are a lot because you have to deal with 20 plus students. 9. A teacher put a kindergarten on the wrong bus and she really showed her emotions. 10. You can see the passion on the new teachers and that what I feel like kids need.

It IS stressful, and you always feel like you are doing it wrong all the time. There are good days and then there are horrible days.

I can relate to those military students. My father deployed on November 2nd that year to Afghanistan. My grandparents came and took care of my brother and I. Then one morning as I was getting ready for school, I heard my uncle screaming for my grandma to wake up..she died that morning. I didn’t go to school for 2 weeks. When I did go back, mr. Roth was so supportive. He really helped me through a lot. My dad came home 3 days after, on his birthday. He was supposed to be gone 9 months. I left school early and flew to Canada to live with my mom. I’m on my way back to America right now.

Exactly, I wish I knew the reality of teaching. Things I didnt get to learn until I was deep into the career. If I knew teaching was not going to he a respectable profession with countless problems that get ignored repeatedly, I would have chosen a different profession. The low pay is one of the problems. Then you have huge class sizes (20-40 students) which makes teaching and classroom management difficult even for an experienced teacher. Lack of support from high admin. and parents. Lack of respect from students (some parents need to be held accountable). However, every situation is different because you may have parents working two or three jobs to provide for their family or it can be something else, so I can understand that part. Endless amounts of paperwork and making appointments with parents. Being a teacher can be draining because of how much energy you're providing. As a teacher, I try to my best to show kids enthusiasm and positivity, so those that are exhausted can feel my energy. But sometimes I feel drained, and it is also ok to show students those days too. Even sometimes when I feel strict or am the "mean" teacher, the kids can see how much I care about them, and I receive many warm hugs. I also reflect a lot about my teaching and learn from other teachers. I get to learn from students too. But again reality has hit a lot of teachers during this pandemic. A lot have realized that teaching is just not worth the pros. Especially when it can be hard to balance work, social life, and own health.

Great question. Two of the teachers are teaching at the same schools we saw them at in the film. Two moved to different cities and are teaching at different schools in Kansas, and one moved to Colorado and is teaching there.

The first year is challenging because people who work as teachers have never been in a classroom for more than 20 days in a row. It's like any other job, challenging in the beginning. Imagine being a parent for life, think about? Enjoy your life.

I agree. To me, it looks like a lot of rural areas and small towns plus lack of diversity among teachers and students. It would have been nice to see teachers working in cities as well. But I do like the video

regarding the kids with ADD and ADHD, I just do not fathom why this issue needs medicine. I am a teacher, i'm Iraqi. I deal with kids just fine. I don't understand why everything little thing has to have a pill.

It can be very helpful to have medication, it helps me a lot. However, I'm an adult. I really don't think kids need medication for that
