This was the ballsiest thing I've ever seen. What I love about KT is how when she's setting up, despite the circumstances, she looks and acts like she's got every right to be there among the big names. And the hunger-- all she needed was one shot, and she took it.

She was only booked as a backup for the show as well: just 'on call' in case one of the other musicians cancelled, and with only about 3 hours to go IIRC, one of them did. Talk about taking the shot...

I was lucky enough to be there. KT sat quietly all the way through and I like most had no idea who she was. That soon changed. Without a shadow of a doubt she was the stand out performance. Very very cool.

She went out when every other act had a reputation behind them to rely on, and she had nothing, and she stole the show with a demonstration of great talent and supreme confidence. Hard to believe this was 20 years ago now. I would love to hear KT Tunstall try some blues tracks, because she has a lovely voice.

The silver lining of sorts, is that this is what comes from street busking or terrible gigs in old man bars. If you can get the looper timing during pisisng rain on Buchanan street whilst a junkie is shouting stuff and spraying bucky everywhere then doing it on Jools Holland is a piece of piss...

Just found out on CraigFergusons podcast,KT got the gig because of rapper Nas last minute cancelling Jools gig...and she just started messing about with the looper ...wasnt a pre planned set up at all yet.This song was the first experimental one,just to get the hang of it,and dial it in. She could have totally fcked up everything .She didnt.Kudos. Wonderful. I bought 5 looper pedals since.And last time i used it,was yesterday. Lets plug it in,and have some fun....🎉

@@igordewit7357 Great to hear. I remember being a kid watching her play a festival and being amazed she could play guitar without looking at her fingers. She was quite a big inspiration to me as a young girl, but only realised this recently! I now play guitar in a band and love to gig, she might have had something to do with that!

One of the very best performances ever recorded on Later with Jools Holland. What makes this even more impressive is the fact that Tunstall was a last minute stand in. Another artist dropped out of the show not long before recording, and KT received a call. She made her way down to the studio with just her guitar and loop pedal, and produce an astonishing live performance.

I remember watching this on the Later show and being blown away! I found out that KT was performing at a small gig in Bristol just a few weeks later and went to see her perform live in front of a hundred or so fans and she was equally amazing.

Been watching Jools since the very start & have to sat that KT is without doubt the best raw talent to have appeared on that show. That's some really stiff opposition she's up against I know but I remember watching this live & once my gaping mouth had closed at the end of her performance, the only word that came out was a gasp of "Wow!". Such a talent & a hell of a way to make an entrance to the big leagues

I loved the contrast between the seriousness and concentration of the set-up, then Boom, she comes to life when the song proper kicks off. Such a powerful, confident performance in front of her peers. Amazing KT, such a huge voice, but always under control. Stamping on the tambourine - genius!

I just learned about this performance from Adam Reader, the Professor of Rock channel just now but I've been watching Mike Love, the Hawaiian musician who I first saw with this kind of set up ( the use of looper) in his songs and live performances. Now I know who the originator was. K T Turnstall was superb here. Truly Amazing!

KT is undeniably one of the most outstanding musical talents to have come out of the UK in the 21st Century. This has to be one of the best and most impressive performances ever on Jools Holland, made even more impressive with that it being her TV debut also! And to think Ed Sheeran fans get excited when he loops, he can't get near this lady, not even fit to lace her boots.
