This was the ballsiest thing I've ever seen. What I love about KT is how when she's setting up, despite the circumstances, she looks and acts like she's got every right to be there among the big names. And the hunger-- all she needed was one shot, and she took it.

She was only booked as a backup for the show as well: just 'on call' in case one of the other musicians cancelled, and with only about 3 hours to go IIRC, one of them did. Talk about taking the shot...

One of the very best performances ever recorded on Later with Jools Holland. What makes this even more impressive is the fact that Tunstall was a last minute stand in. Another artist dropped out of the show not long before recording, and KT received a call. She made her way down to the studio with just her guitar and loop pedal, and produce an astonishing live performance.

I absolutely loved this at the time, couldn't believe this every time she did it live on TV and it was a slightly different arrangement every single time. Met her (i didn't say anything because i didn't want to 'out her' in a confined space) on a boat trip in Skye later that year and have bought every album since. Finally got to see her in concert last year and she was fantastic, of course but this one is always special.

I have to admit that I had never heard of her until 2007 when she recorded backing vocals for one of my favourite singer songwriters Suzanne Vega on her album "Beauty & Crime" I read on Google that the two of them actually never met during the recording of that album. Such a shame, because they both have alot in common. Only Suzanne has been around since the 1980's.

This was the performance that first introduced me to KT Tunstall and she remains one of my favourite singer/songwriters. Her acoustic rendition of Don Henley's 'Boys of Summer' at the Old Vinyl Factory (now available on this site) is a lesson in how to put your own spin on a cover version; those lyrics coming from a female voice with the haunting echo of the empty factory building changes the meaning of the song, for the better in my opinion. Put your best headphones on and turn the volume up to 11-ty-stupid to get the best of it.
