I've noticed there's one big difference between the UK version and the USA version of 'Long Lost Family'. In the UK version if the researchers find out a parent or parents of the person featured has died then they say: 'out of respect we've told xxx away from the cameras that their mother/father is deceased.' In the USA version they have no qualms about telling someone straight to their face on camera that their mother or father is dead. Shock reactions seem an acceptable part of the show. There's no consideration for the feelings of those involved.

I’m an American & I’ve read that even Gordon Ramsey is different (less abrasive & shocking) in the UK vs US versions of his shows. I am guessing that since Americans have basically seen & heard it all that we’re less sensitive to most things. When you’ve been desensitized to that degree, it takes more to even notice, much less be affected by such things. (In case it needs clarity, I’m not implying that that’s a good thing.)

there are multiple episodes of the british version doing the exact same thing. And the people in the show always give their consent. You're clearly some bitter british person. I might be too if I had to live in your sh*thole. Why do british jealousy a national sport?

@@pilsplease7561There is NO difference in how you love them, or how you CAN love them. My Mom was briefly married before she married my dad. My 'half" sister was 8 yrs older than me. And I have two younger brothers. We NEVER used the word 'half' unless it was to explain something about the family. She died in 2017 at 77. I still don't know how I continued to breathe after she died. I was holding her hand. I'm happy for KT.

my adoptive mother died 2 years ago and I just now tried to find my biological mother. After some time spent on a lot of bureaucratic stuff i finally found her, I have her facebook and found I have more than 7 sisters and brothers lol. Problem is, I didn't take the first step to let them know yet. I'm kind of an introverted person and they seem to always have meetings and get togethers. I don't also feel such urgency to know my biological mother in the sense that my adoptive one was the best in the world and I would never trade her for anyone else. on the other hand, time will pass and who knows how I'll feel later on or if I'll regret not meeting them.
@petertrickaz8 ай бұрын
I've been through something similar in that my father had several illegitimate kids - one of whom got in touch with me on Facebook, and also a close friend of mine is adopted and found some of his siblings years later. And I can tell you there's no perfect way of breaking the ice, but reaching out may be worth it if you want to do it. Be prepared though, that you don't know how you or they will react or feel about it. You could end up with a close bond or feeling really awkward with them, but you don't know til you take the plunge. I wish you well anyway!!

At the age of 61 I recently found my birth mother and discovered I have 6 half siblings. She lives another country and we have spoken via WhatsApp 5 times in the past year but TBH I feel absolutely no connection to her whatsoever as she is terrified her children will find out about me and will judge her. She has not asked me anything about myself or my childhood or shown any interest at all. It's all about her in every conversation to the point where I have decided I'm not going to bother speaking to her anymore. Yes she delighted I'm alive and had a great childhood but if she won't own up to my sibling about having had me then what's the point. I am extremely fortunate though because she has an older sister who helped her when she was pregnant with me and as soon as I DNA matched with her granddaughter she knew who I was an immediately asked if she could phone me. She lives in yet another country but we speak twice weekly via WhatsApp and she is wonderful. Unlike my BM she immediately welcomed me into her family and told her children about me. She has filled me in on all of my ancestors and I have now been able to do my family tree with 220 people in it. I went and stayed with her for 2 weeks and it just feels as if I have always known her. She is amazing. I also reached out to my birth father side. He is deceased as is his wife so I have 4 half siblings on his side. I DNA matched years ago with his sister who lives in the USA, but I didn't make any contact with my siblings until last year after I accessed my birth file due to the new law passed in Ireland which gave adoptees the rights to access their files. Sadly they don't want to get to know me, which is hard as none of it was my fault, but everyone is different I suppose. My aunts husband did send me 16 typed pages of my birth fathers genealogy so I have been able to complete that side of my family tree as well which is great as I now know where I came from and it does help to make me feel more complete. My Mum and Dad were fabulous and I couldn't have wanted for a better home, but it is still nice to finally fill in the missing pieces, but like you I couldn't do it while they were alive as it seemed ungrateful. I don't regret doing my search but you do have to go into it preparing for rejection which does hurt even as a grown adult. I'm happy to discuss things with you if you'd like any advice on how to proceed. Would happily give you my phone number if you want to talk. My maternal aunt has proved that you don't necessarily have to get on with your BP's to find out about your family, it just takes one family member to be interested in you and I felt an instant connection from that first phonecall, because she was so welcoming unlike my BM who would rather I stayed a 'secret'.

@@jmk1962 Thanks for your kind words. Yes I'm still debating if i should just call expecting anything really. I'll let you know.

@@DavoXDesign - My advice is to write a letter to your birth mother telling her a bit about yourself and see if she replies. That way you'll k ow if you're going to get a good reaction or not. She might not have told your siblings that you exist so it's best to check it out with her first before approaching any of them.
