Pop Physics Lecture: Doesn't have to be going fast when it's also heavy and stopped quickly. Average impact force = change in momentum divided by change in time (collision duration). Average force F = dp/dt, where momentum p = mass x velocity, dp = change in momentum, dt = change in time, or impact/collision duration. So, for a heavy object, even moving relatively slowly, to be brought to a halt abruptly (dt = small) means a very large avg force! This can be easily seen using caps letters for large quantities.....avg F = d(M x v) / dt if your recall your 2nd grade division course....the smaller dt is the larger avg F is. Note: product rule from 3rd grade calculus: d(M x v) = dM x v + M x dv but unless parts fall off the truck, there is no appreciable change in mass m, so d(M x v) = M x dv. So...impact force is proportional to the mass (of the truck), magnitude of the velocity (speed), and inversely proportional to the duration (dt). Let's put it altogether....Let M = mass of truck, let v_i and v_f be velocity magnitudes before and after impact (v_f = 0), and finally, dt be the impact duration. The average impact force F = M x (0 - v_i) / dt = - v_i x M / dt. Note the negative sign in this result. It tells us that in order for the truck to be brought to a halt, the force acting on it MUST be in the opposite direction to its motion. Cool. Anywho, since M is huge, and dt is small, there will be appreciable impact force which clearly decreases with speed. If someone has the mass of the truck (in kg where there are roughly 2.2lbs/kg here on earth), an estimate of its speed on impact (in m/s where 1 m/s = approx 2.24 MPH), and an estimate of the impact duration...I would guess somewhere between 0.25 and 1 second. The average force will be in Newtons but you can convert that to pound-force using 1 N = 0.2248 lb-force. Anyway, in a nutshell there was a hell of a lot of force during the impact even if the truck was only rolling 5 mph.

I smell a detroit falling out of a engine cavity and a cummins going in its place. I don't know how it ever turned that fifteen speed in the first place. I drove one with that set up in a off highway heys truck up on the prince of whales island and I couldn't get it rolling fast enough on any flat to get up on the top gears with one hundred fifty thousand pd., loaded (gross) I hated that detroit so bad but then I started driving with a fellow who gave me a job that no one else would drive and that was a auto car with a 8-53 and there is the definition of boat anchor and it was highway truck. It took me all day to make two trips if I loaded first (log trucks) I finally drove long enough for him that another guy gave me a job driving and it was a little three fifty and a five and four but it was a dream as I kept up and drove the wheels off it. He got a newer truck and out of all the guys there (six) I got that big cam two with a dime button, It was a big improvement and I could load last in the morning and get my trips and if there was enough light left then I would head for the landing and load myself with a anything that would leave the landing cleaner and not hurt the next days loads for the morning. He constantly handed me a fifty here and there. There is meat left in the white even if it ain't my first choice of trucks cause the parts are so dang heavy. I finally gave up driving for wrenches as there is way more money and same tired
