Sounded like it dropped some valves which caused piston damage, this was the most common catastrophic failure I used to see on these old cummins motors usually due to over-revving on a downgrade they can't handle anything over 3,000 or the valves float. When the valves start floating and they hit the pistons and it knocks the keepers out...game over.

When I was in my early years in the auto industry, about 17 years ago, I had the pleasure of working on a 1997 F350 7.3L turbodiesel. On that day I had my first lesson in diesel mechanics as well as safety. The engine was a no start issue. My coworker turned the key, I proceeded to spray ether into the airbox. We were totally unaware of what we were doing (both of us inexperienced with diesel). The top of that motor blew up sending me to the floor and shrapnel all over the shop. I am fairly certain that's where my lack of hearing and fear of diesels came from. Haha. It's a memory I will never forget.

I've some very strong 855 big cam engines. Had a boss who liked building them extra loose. Thing would smoke out a 10 acre field every morning of winter but after coming to temp the only smoke you'd see was fuel. No problems breaking the speed limits of VA highways with 83,000 lbs.

The thing is, you don't often see anyone blowing up these big diesels properly. I'm saying I like this; and what's wrong with doing just one or two of each kind if they are plentiful? It's really something to see any diesel eat one piston at a time (or whatever) until they're gone.

I would of possibly paid for that engine, emailed you 200 times asking questions and negotiating on the price to then end up wasting all your time by not purchasing it. It would be perfect to sit next to the rest of the shit in my yard the town is threatening me to remove.

Well that was a special type of fun that my wife would never get... I was a student in the Diesel program at Santa Rosa Jr College and my instructor gave me the thumbs up on fabricating a heat exchanger using the waste heat off the exhaust stack. The purpose of the heat exchanger was to thin up the viscosity of used veggie oil and let the Cat motor suck it back up as fuel. We had attached a water brake to measure horse power difference between veggie oil vs real diesel. Anyways half way into the semester some of the piston had enough of this BS and went on strike. They melted and exploded like a volcano. No one got hurt but it was truly amazing when the exhaust started pouring orange sparks all over the shop floor.

Having watched the video, i need to see the teardown now because I'm calling a "no-blow". I've a feeling all that happened was you bent/burned some valves although the final clunk may have been a piston, but to be different, i call it as you only bent some valves and cremated the turbo. ;) Oh, and have you seen NEUTRAL DROP's channel? they do some pretty entertaining content too, as well as ol' Peg. Peace out man

I don't think that would work for a mechanical pump due to ether being a solvent instead of a lubricant like Diesel

can you run a prechamber injected diesel vs a direct injection diesel on Crude oil and Gasoline and see how much of a knocking it takes some old commercials - for example for some farm tractors claim they are multi fuel and the prechamber injection helps prevent knocking to the point that you supposedly can run it on a gasoline fuel oil mix, kerosine, waste oil and low tar crude oil

A 14 liter? Must be an 855, otherwise known as a ‘250’. I drove a ‘73 Gillig school bus with that engine. (It was turned sideways and mounted under the floor, midship). That was the best sounding bus in the fleet. The 743 (known as a 220) also had a sweet sound, but that mighty 855 couldn’t be stopped. So much freaking torque you could climb a wall with that 10-speed Eaton Roadranger behind it!
