Sounded like it dropped some valves which caused piston damage, this was the most common catastrophic failure I used to see on these old cummins motors usually due to over-revving on a downgrade they can't handle anything over 3,000 or the valves float. When the valves start floating and they hit the pistons and it knocks the keepers out...game over.

When I was in my early years in the auto industry, about 17 years ago, I had the pleasure of working on a 1997 F350 7.3L turbodiesel. On that day I had my first lesson in diesel mechanics as well as safety. The engine was a no start issue. My coworker turned the key, I proceeded to spray ether into the airbox. We were totally unaware of what we were doing (both of us inexperienced with diesel). The top of that motor blew up sending me to the floor and shrapnel all over the shop. I am fairly certain that's where my lack of hearing and fear of diesels came from. Haha. It's a memory I will never forget.

Well that was a special type of fun that my wife would never get... I was a student in the Diesel program at Santa Rosa Jr College and my instructor gave me the thumbs up on fabricating a heat exchanger using the waste heat off the exhaust stack. The purpose of the heat exchanger was to thin up the viscosity of used veggie oil and let the Cat motor suck it back up as fuel. We had attached a water brake to measure horse power difference between veggie oil vs real diesel. Anyways half way into the semester some of the piston had enough of this BS and went on strike. They melted and exploded like a volcano. No one got hurt but it was truly amazing when the exhaust started pouring orange sparks all over the shop floor.

That pretty much puts to bed the argument about a snort of ether to cold start a diesel being destructive.

A 14 liter? Must be an 855, otherwise known as a ‘250’. I drove a ‘73 Gillig school bus with that engine. (It was turned sideways and mounted under the floor, midship). That was the best sounding bus in the fleet. The 743 (known as a 220) also had a sweet sound, but that mighty 855 couldn’t be stopped. So much freaking torque you could climb a wall with that 10-speed Eaton Roadranger behind it!

i learn a lot from your teardown vids but I also enjoy destruction vids. What was the jingling sound from the engine while you guys were trying to put the pvc pipe on?

I can't believe you're filling a long tube with ether and putting it close to fire on one end 😆 Jesus man talk about a big cannon!
