I wouldn't end the friendship I'd just make him apologize because relationships have ups and downs and you'll never work anything out and lose someone you love just because they were being a jerk. I completely understand that he should have said that crap but he was pissed and stressed. Me being me I'd probably forgive him before he even apologizes then give him alone time then spend some time with him because sometimes just being there for them really helps.
