KTM 1290 Superduke GT : Bigger Windscreen Upgrade!

In today's video i'm installing the PUIG windscreen on my KTM 2020 superduke 1290 GT. Even with the original screen on this touring bike the wind was still pounding on my chest when i was doing freeway runs so bought this upgrade. Next video i will let you guys know how it feels and performs against the wind. Trying to turn this ktm into the best road touring bike possible.

I had mine cracked by accident, and decided to cut it making a shorter screen, really dope, as far wind blow, night and day using a SHOEI helmet instead of a Shark (i.e.)

I had this Screen on my 2019 GT that i use a lot for german motorway commuting. I found this screen pretty dangerous and returned it cause it made my bike unstable at speeds above 140 km/h. Now i use the wrs touring screen, better optics, very good an clean wind protection an no problems with high speed stability.

Be good to know if it does the trick or will you get hit with wind coming in through between mudguard and lights like my SDR

On my 990SMT the taller screen makes the bike weave at higher speeds, works well at normal cruise speed, but terrible on faster German autobahn, good luck with the jelly belly 😱👍

Ik heb dezelfde Puig. Het ziet er misschien minder uit, maar als je van vakantie een dag terug moet rijden in de volle regen, dan ben je er heel blij mee. Tevens is de fiets stabieler op hogere snelheden, dan met het originele ruitje.

Update for you Smokey - I had the tall clear PUIG windscreen on my KTM 2020 SD GT for about a month, and then tried the WRS windscreen. Of the two, the WRS windscreen both looks better and cleans up the airflow much better than the PUIG. IMO, the WRS windscreen manages the airflow so well that wind blast at 130-140km/h is not only tolerable but darn near enjoyable. The WRS design gets a better airflow from a screen that is roughly 2" shorter than the PUIG - and it stays out of the way when wheelieing the bike. KTM should consider offering the SD GT with WRS screens instead of the OEM version. Gas mileage was also a decent 50mpg at the speeds quoted above. One final thing - I used the PUIG standoffs when mounting the WRS screen and maybe the combination of the two led to such good outcome.

Mike, how tall are you? I tested Puig adjustable visor with the stock screen but it helps only a little so I'm looking for a bigger screen now.

@@maciekptk I used the Puig touring screen, which was the tallest one they had. I'm just barely 5'10" (178cm) and found that the touring screen moved the airflow to the top of my helmet, which isn't so bad. However, I wasn't really keen on the look of the thing and ended up buying the WRS windscreen, which was slightly shorter than the Puig touring version but equally as effective in diverting airflow. Anyway, the WRS version I find works pretty well in channeling the wind around the rider.

The trouble with fork mounted large windscreens is they are essentials big sails directly affecting which directions your front wheel want to redirect itself to ....which is exactly why all true sportbikes racebikes and serious touring motorcycles ALL have FRAME mounted wind protection that the forks are not influenced by, Which is why I am not excited about buying a naked bike and installing a nice windscreen ....really bums me out

I think that all these screens tend to have a variability in production that wouldn't be accepted in an OEM product. I've had Puig screens on quite a few bikes and, although they have rarely been a perfect fit, they have all been manageable, and all have been very robust, much like in the review. I'd also point out that the sunlight disclaimer is pretty much universal now, and is seen as a way of avoiding product liability issues. Not the sort of thing I'd be concerned about. BTW, I'd suggest avoiding putting this sort of screen under stress, as that is likely to cause internal fissures. Much better to use gentle heat and light persuasion.

I'm from the area these screens are made, and used to work in Granollers, which is their base. The correct pronunciation would be poodge. As an aside, a puig in Catalan is a hill, which sounds a lot less glamorous, doesn't it? Like your videos, keep them coming. Hope you're feeling better.

Ehh, it doesn't look that bad imo, I've seen plenty of windscreen that are way way uglier than this one to be honest. Plus Puig makes really good stuff so I bet you will appreciate it after a long ride, it's my to-go brand on pretty much every bike I've owned 😄 Nerd note: Cx is the symbol for the drag coefficient in fluid/aero dynamics, for some countries in europe (here in Italy for example, and in Spain also), I think (not sure) in most of the world the symbol is Cd though.

Yeah. In fact, I believe that the Cx is the official scientific terminology, as x habitually refers to the cross section. C is the coefficient, so Cx is cross-section multiplied by coefficient. Cd is a reference to the term "drag", which is hardly a scientific term, but more easily understand by lay people.

I'd be surprised to hear there was no helmet buffeting at high speeds with that taller wind screen because it's so far ahead of the rider on the bike. Ever watch the movie Spaceballs? (from where Tesla's terms "ludicrous " and "Plaid" come from) I couldn't help but think of "Dark Helmet" when looking at that tall Puig screen. And what was it moulded from? Acrylic or poly? Polycarbonate I hope.

the bigger screens look so bad, am sure they help but look like a massive flat screen TV on the front.....be cool if they could radius or bubble the screen so it looks a lil bit better....am sure I would use one as wind is pretty bad on bikes without any protection
