Score on of these carb models if you can! We have ridden this back to back with the TPI model and the carb model is way more responsive and has much more power at lower revs. We have ridden two TPI models with the full treatment of custom ECU and upgraded cylinder heads but the bottom end still doesn't match the carb model. See our videos about TPI problems: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnqqoYefi6eJY80

I recently owned a 2017 250 XC-W and it was a great bike for what it was designed for. My only problem, aside from the carb, was the suspension. I don't think it was bad. It was fine for tight, technical trails but hated high speed chop (massive headshake). I should have purchased the XC model. I ended up selling it and getting a bike better suited for my riding. Otherwise I would have definitely needed to send the forks and shock for a re-spring and re-valve. Sometimes I still think I should kept it and got the suspension re-worked as it was really good bike in all other areas. I should note, I only weigh about 150 pounds (68Kg) and still felt the WP was too soft. The KYB on my YZ250FX is just right, though.

If you upgrade I recommend passing on the TPI models, Damo. We compared these with a late model carb and there's no comparison... even after the TPI bike was remapped and a redesigned head was fitted.

@@crosstrainingenduro the next bike will be something with decent stock suspension. I wish ktm would stick decent suspension in atleast their 6 days models, instead of blinging them out! Another thing that pisses me off about ktm is how they have such crap stock forks, but then offer a drop in cartridge based off a design they stopped using in 2014 🤔.

I've had some interesting discussions with suspension tuners... why does White Power keep redesigning their forks every few years? Instead of simply focusing on getting it right (Like the SSS version of KYB on Yamahas) then stick with it? We wonder if the designers at WP are just trying to keep themselves employed?

Great review Barry. KTM has done some pretty big innovations and that's to be commended. There's been some issues that follow, but nothing catastrophic it appears. I agree with the counterbalance. It's a nice feature, I rode one, and it's noticeable, but my properly tuned Beta had very little vibration and I don't notice it after about 30 seconds down the trail.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 5 жыл бұрын
there seems to be a huge variation with some riders can't detect vibration in any bike, to guys who are so sensitive it gives them numb fingers. i suspect the kato will go down well for the latter. 😊

@bpowa
@bpowa 5 жыл бұрын
Gumby the real issue with the mikuni carb is the jet block gasket. Look it up on ktmtalk. The slide mod or jetting will not help unless the gasket is replaced. I got a keihin before the fix or the mikuni is sorted out. The bike runs flawlessly. I have no complaints with the AER forks..
@JasonHenderson
@JasonHenderson 5 жыл бұрын
mikuni carbs on the internet have always been junk. i have them on both of my 2002 hondas (a 125 and a 250) and i've never had a problem with them after i get them jetted right. everyone with jetting issues blames the mikuni carb but once they are jetted right you can ride on them forever. i may get around to doing the pwk swap on my 250 dunes bike eventually to try and get more power out of it, she runs rich now but i don't have to worry about blowing it up trying to click into 6th
@SteveJones-xq9bp
@SteveJones-xq9bp 5 жыл бұрын
Internet experts hate the mikuni because they either can’t tune a carb or all they have ever had before is keihin carbs. The mik on my 17 250xc was easy to dial in, that bike runs amazing. The 17s were also jetted very poorly out of the box compared to the 18s. Overall I’d buy my 250xc again in a heartbeat.

@@SteveJones-xq9bp Yeah.. I thought the same until I got one that didn't work right.. I'm not biased with any carb and nor care to spend 400 bucks getting my bike to run right. If you see a gasket failing in a new carb. You don't have to be an expert to see it's defective. Some bikes are affected some arent. It has nothing to do with jetting incorrectly. Jetting is not hard I am sure you know this. Jetting uses the same basic principals with any carb.

Wished KTM/Husky would issue an ongoing recall on the rotor ring gear cutting into the wiring harness i side the ignition cover. On some bikes it may not be an issue, at least for a while.

@fredman1085

It' my understanding that KTM is sticking with WP Suspension because they bought controlling interest in WP a number of years ago and so it's just a matter of business economics. I actually have a pair of the 4CS forks, had them reworked by Click-it Suspension and the difference is incredible. Why WP didn't get it right in the first place is the mystery to me. It ruined KTM's whole reputation of how the bikes handled. Stupid-stupid-stupid.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 5 жыл бұрын
i just found that out recently too... it explains why they persist with WP. what baffles me is that our local suspension tuner has a very experienced suspension designer with a $30000 dyno and it only takes a few trials to see where the changes are needed. i don't understand why suspension manufacturers don't do this themselves and nail it immediately. kayaba have done a great job with their SSS setup and wisely have just left it the way it is, and yamaha/gas gas riders with the KYB gear consistently rave about it.

I believe it's called " We're selling them like hotcakes, so we don't give a shit". A very popular business philosophy in the motorcycle industry. Harley Davidson is reaping the fallout of this. I own one, so I speak from experience.

my suspension guy pays his mortgage on ktm forks/shocks. race tech 4cs conversion kits and gold valves fixes everything for about $1300usd with springs. anyone who doesn't weigh 88kg and goes out on stock springs is only hurting themselves.

@JasonHenderson 5 жыл бұрын
go with the race edition beta. already has the fmf exhaust. already has the vforce reeds, better carb, closed cartridge forks (dual chamber), better rims, better tires, better headlight/front number plate, i could go on. I bought a 2017 beta rr and my buddy bought a 2018 ktm xcw and he is disappointed with the overall quality., he knocks ktm more than my other buddies who own betas. or spend more money for the xcw and then spend more money fixing the stock suspension and fixing the stock reeds and fixing the stock carb and fixing... i could go on. ktm is cutting corners lately because beta and gasgas and sherico and everyone is finally putting pressure on them in the enduro/woods bike.
