KTM 390 Adventure DIY Rackless Luggage Solution

After years of using the Zana International pannier rack on my KTM 390 Adventure I decided it was time to make a change to the way I carried luggage on the bike. The pannier rack had bent over the years and I didn't want new pannier rack that was either really wide or really expensive. I found a Rhinowalk harness that was perfect for mounting some Tusk Pilot bags to providing a solid mounting location.

My 13 year old granddaughter was walking past when your commercial was on about the tire pump just as you were "hand pumping the tire". She stopped dead in her track and exclaimed "what is he doing!?" As I was laughing out loud, she then stated, oh! he's pumping up his tire! and walked on past. I am still laughing typing this out. LOL! The sides of my chest hurt!

I put a set of Enduristan rackless Blizzard (Lg) bags on my 390, and the Rottweiler rear brake master cylinder guard with anchor points to use for the lower strap attachments. Very reasonably priced ($300), waterproof, great quality and even have some orange accents that look great with the bike. Added the matching Tornado duffel bag to go across the top. Really pleased with this setup.

That sounds like a great setup. I have really wanted to try out Enduristan products. Little bit of orange is a nice touch.

Rhino walk makes a great product. I have a set of soft panniers and two dry bags from rhinowalk for 2 seasons now on my klr zero complaints. Been contemplating buying their hard tank bag. Nice review

I've used the Kriega OS base on mine. It was pretty solid but I didn't like how it rubbed the fenders. Switched to the Zana rack with OS platforms later on.

The Zana rack served me well. I have a few ideas to make this rackless a bit more secure. Just need to get to it.

Thanks Matt! I have the Adventour saddle stays with the Rhinowalk soft panniers and that works well, but looks like the Rhinowalk soft base would definately be lighter even though the Adventour stay is made of plastic it still has a bit of weight. Just wonder how quick it is take it all off to get to under the seat?

It is not quick to take off if you need to get under the seat.

Great effort. I use the kriega OS base with os12/18 bags. Works perfectly, very tough and re sellable (I bought them as new, second hand so if I was to sell them on I'd likely get all my money back).

cool. need to see a vid of you riding with saddle bags, to see if they flop around too much. I have a Kriega ($$) system, with 'universal' mount. Like the Rhinowalk. My "universal' mounting thing doesn't really work at all. So much for being 'universal fit'. If you can't cinch down the various anchor points, a system isn't very flexible.

I was actually able to mount up the universal base pretty well, but I didn't like how it was rubbing the rear fenders. The rear was attached to my Tusk top rack and the front attached to aftermarket heel guards if I recall correctly

@@luciano136 the forward anchoring points/straps need to be longer and able to be cinched down. The straps aren’t long enough for my bike.

​@@steveh545390 Adv, right? I had no issues on mine. I also crossed the front ones under the bike in front of the passenger pegs before I had heel guards.

@@luciano136 more like an RD04 Africa Twin. Hips are wide so straps don’t reach far enough forward. I’ll have to check if there’s somewhere else I could mount to.

Will that system work on small dual sports like a wr250r and the the like ? I'm planning on using it on more rugged adventure were taking a bigger adv bike should not be taken

I think the harness will work but you may want smaller bags that fit tighter to the harness, maybe a 15 liter bag.

@@gabrielkopp2036 I am using 20 liter bags on a similar harness, it's a but tricky to get them mounted and secure. If you are creative you can get them to work.
