I have this bike and agree with you on all points. Worst: The windscreen. It is really bad, but it is easily fixed. Best: Suspension. Offroad/gravel roads is where this bike belongs. The immediate confidence you get to push a higher tempo surprised me a lot. The brakes are very good too. It has a tall ride height but shorter guys like me (I'm 168cm) have no problem handling it with standard seat and suspension settings.
@szatanica15 жыл бұрын
I’ve just finished the test ride on the S version and I’m really super surprised! It feels sooooo light I couldn’t belive it. Comparing to F850GS it’s like a gazelle to an elephant! Lowering the tank was brilliant. The ride was super smoooth, it had no issues at alll (i’ve reached 160km), I had double the confidence on dirt (and the bike had regular road tires), the seat was lowered so I had just enough hight to be comfortable (although If I was to buy it I would still use the lowering kit as I’m 165cm). Hight shield protected very well from the wind although I had the same issue as you did with the beak on my helmet, handlebards are very big, great TFT display, great breaks, and the engine is brilliant, so super smooth, I love the KTM roaring sound on the low end. The gears are great, not to long, not too short, setting up the mirrors can be done with one finger (as opposed to GS, which requires a lot of force), it has a navigation mount and a cigarette plug. I do have however these issues: - standing position is just nightmare! The pegs are too highly placed and too close to the bike, the seat is too wide which causes me to round my legs and bend my knees like I’m on a horse. This will not work for a long offroad ride, no chance. Also the hight of the handlebars are too low for standing: I was bowing like I was going for a confession. Risers needed asap. How are you tall guys are handling it, I don’t know... - the suspension is hard as a brick. And it’s not adjustable (on version S!!, R is adjustable) so it will need some money to set this up the way I’d like it - the seat is a wooden paddle, seriously. I cannot imagine seating on it for 300-400km, not in this lifetime - the heat from the engine goes straight into the sides of your legs, and it was bothering me, even though it was only 20 deg. C outside! I can’t imagine what happens when I go to Georgia or Middle East and it’s 40...! O_o Those issues can be real problems as I don’t see a simple way of overcoming those, and the bike already is very pricey, so these could be deal breakers for me. I’m looking forward to 390 ADV. It could be a game changer, although I must say 790 has enormous amount of potential.

790 Adv R owner ... Also have a 1200GS WC and several dirt bikes. The 790 fits my needs perfectly. The GS is a bit heavy for the technical offroad riding and it always felt more like work than fun when going on a BDR or small trails. I am still in awe how well the GS does off road but it has its limits. I can't say anything negative about the 790. Yes, there have been reports about some issues. However, there isn't a 1st year bike where there aren't any issues. Even my GS had problems when it was new. Anyone who buys a bike and doesn't expect some problems is kidding themselves. Luckily I haven't had anything yet. To talk about the hight ... I never gave it any thought with any of my bikes. All dirt bikes are very tall. The 790 is tall but that's not an issue. I'm 5'10 (177cm) and it's not a problem at all. The low windscreen doesn't bother me either. I have zero buffeting with my Arai XD4 helmet. The wind hits me but there is no buffeting, so it's not a problem. I ride with earplugs anyway. I wouldn't use the taller windscreen because of all the offroad riding and it would get in the way. For what I do, it's great. Also, if I did mostly highway riding, I would have bought the non R version with the taller screen. But I agree that it would have been nice to have an adjustable screen like the GS, which can be used on the go. The bike handles a lot better on the road than I expected and is a lot of fun. The engine pulls hard and since the weight is only around 200kg, it is very agile. For hard off road riding I need to get better tires as the stock rubber isn't great. I am very happy with my addition and you can't go wrong with a 790.

All off-road biased bikes are tall. The way people ride them, even shorter riders, is to slide your backside out and down towards your favoured standing leg. Keep the bike in gear when you stop. Try it. And I still don't know why you tested the R version and not the standard version. You do almost no off-road.

Thanks for your review as always. You raise some points that people need to think about for sure. I'm exactly the same height as you, 5'8 X 32" leg - the 790R definitely isn't too tall for me. You were wearing sports bike boots. Wear some adventure boots and there's 1/2" on both legs for starters. In an ideal world you ought to comment on off-road use after you've been off-road on it really. Pop to Sweet Lamb and you'll have a blast! These bikes aren't 'road only' bikes. Don't buy the R if you want a road bike as there are better bikes to buy. But if you want a road/off-road, go pretty much anywhere bike, in comfort, then get the R - it's as close to perfection as currently possible for a dual sport. A brilliant, playful, capable bike. They do need engine bars and a bash plate though!

Seems to me that only those with an inside leg substantially more than your 32" will be happy with this machine. Stop on an incline or a camber and you've dropped it! Thanks TMF for the review. When riding through a series of left and right bends, corners, or roundabout, doesn’t the swishing petrol in those fuel tanks cause any instability? You would have through the weight of the fuel would have some sort of gyroscopic effect being moved from side to side.

Great round up on a cracking bike but as you pointed out “not for shorties” I really wanted one and so did a 2 day off road course with KTM at their centre and at the end of it was amazed by how good it was off road but even at 5’9 I just felt it wouldn’t give me the confidence with that seat height. The other seat from the Adventure S only lowers you 10mm, not enough really. In the end I went 850 GS Adventure with the lower seat and just love it. As far as the wind screen is concerned, you do need a torx wrench to adjust it, although a company has already come out with a knob you can turn by hand, I adjusted mine to its upper setting and it does a good enough job, even at 75mph to not be of great concern for me. I guess it depends where your riding experience is coming from. If your used to big cruisers or adv bikes with large screens and fairings it would seem like a lot of buffeting.

I’m surprised KTM try to sell this bike at all in the UK, as the UK doesn’t have the sort of terrain this bike is designed for. Possibly if you intended to intended to cross the channel and do sections of the trans European trail or similar you could develop an argument for buying one in the UK. They much are much too heavy for most people on any Green Lanes I’ve seen in the UK However these 790s are ideal in places like Aus, NZ, S.A. and the US on some trails and gravel roads you get there. I’ve heard the TMF say the modern superbikes are irrelevant for the road. Absolutely agree - They have too much performance and too much tyre grip. But an adventure bike on a low grip surface gives most riders access to the feeling that they using their skill and their bikes ability to the full. I do think once you leave the sealed surface, anything with more than 1 cylinder is too big for most. The rider mostly needs to be confident (a bit a skill helps too...), and as the Aussie guy alluded to below its best on someone else’s bike as bike adventure bike can bend easily.

Hi TMF, I have a KTM 790 ADV S and yes the suspension is not as adjustable as the R version but the S is more road biased. I've noticed you've done it for a few videos in series recently (or perhaps it's how a perceive it); it feels unnecessarily drawn out having the videos for this bike spread out over....is it something like 6 weeks? And I think it went back a while ago? I'm curious if it's getting on other viewers nerves or if it's just me (it's not that annoying, let's be completely honest here....just a minor niggle). It always sounds like you could go back to your three video a week schedule when you say you've got about a year's worth of stuff in the can (unless I misunderstood the schedule, and of course I don't have any appreciation for the editing and how long that takes).
@TheMissendenFlyer5 жыл бұрын
I am producing three videos a week! ....just couldn’t keep up with just two although that remains my “official” publishing schedule - I fact of late I’ve been turning down and cancelling lots of planned content in an attempt to get back some time....
@SuperchargedLlama5 жыл бұрын
@@TheMissendenFlyer I can completely understand that; I hope the subscription model means it's a more viable source of income so that you can spend more time on it knowing it's an earner....but I can also see how that could suck the fun out of it for you too. My main question then would be with regards to scheduling of the content releases for a certain bike being spread out too much (imo); have you found that this approach has lead to increased views for the subsequent videos? I ask because it feels different to the pattern you seemingly followed before.

Not sure about that low slung plastic fuel tank, wonder if it can handle being dropped and not be punctured in rocky terrain, underseat would probably be better like the 701 etc. Seat height would be ok if you are 6 foot 6+ ;-)
@TheMissendenFlyer5 жыл бұрын
I imagine KTM did a lot of testing of that tank - the low COG is amazing for handling...

I'm not sure that i have enough confidence to ride there even though I know I would have to ride on the other side of the road. That "red" light looked yellow to me and it's was what looked like to me to be in the middle of nowhere? I'm sure it all makes sense if you live there. Not sure why people park on the road when there is no shoulder? You do that here and you can pick your car up at the pound and pay a fine for impeding traffic, having nowhere else to park would be no excuse and might piss the Judge off... Nice bike....

We sold 15 790 Adventure normal and R combined since launch this year. So far we had one machine with the fuel gauge issuse and the other with a leaking shaft seal at the drive sproket. (yeah and one fell over in our yard - we couldn`t get the bikes inside fast enough when a sudden rainstorm hit, that one doesn`t count, but it hurts like hell watching a brand new bike tople over in slow motion :-( Other than that no problems at all, and furthermore only smiles on costumers faces.

I like the look of some KTM's (and was thinking about a Scalpel) but a friend bought a new 690SMCR and the day he got it the dash died and kept doing so, then leading a group in abroad - it lasted a day before the clutch pee'd fluid everywhere resulting in him doing an 800 mile round trip to collect his other bike. Needless to say he's got rid of it.

I thought I'd love the 790 series of bike, but to me, they sound like they've got some oil starvation issue going on, I mean, I know they haven't and it's just a characteristic of the engine noise, no doubt made far far worse by the frequencies the helmet camera/microphones pick up in addition to the Euro exhausts killing any exhausts notes which would normally cover up engine noise, but... I'm not sure I could live with that engine noise :/ it's bug the hell out of me, you know? I'm sure there are some lovely aftermarket pipes for this bike though.

Tenere 700 is a great alternative if you (1) do not have the money for the 790 (even non-R) and (2) are tall enough to ride with the optional higher comfort seat on the Tenere because the standard seat is unrideable.

If you ride in the dirt, want a real gas tank, great brakes, awesome suspension, the 3,500 is well worth it, if you putt around on the street and gravel roads well then, really any bike will do.

The 790R was made to be ridden hard in the dirt, and i dont mean gravel roads, so witout riding it so does not do it justice. It's balance and nimbleness will put many other adventure bikes in its class to shame.

The standard 790 Adventure seat won't help you with the height. It's the suspension what's causing the greater height.

TMF, I guess Adventure R is so off-road focused the standard Adventure 790 is better for many of us = lower height, better screen, same performance etc even tho’ it has less adjustable suspension. But I think KTM really need to do purely road orientated 790 for touring = a ‘baby’ 1290 Super Duke GT.

I have tested the standard version with the higher windscreen but the wind buffeting is also horrible. In general i didn´t like this bike. It looks perfect on paper and perhaps it is perfect if you are going offroad but for onroad use there are better adventure bikes out there.

First customer advice - if you want to buy bike made in India you should rather look for Royal Enfield. It also have some flaws but it's way cheaper than KTM. Second customer advice - if you want realiable bike to ride to Mongolia buy Tenere700 or even CB500X. You'll pay much less money but they won't leave you standing in middle of nowhere.

I can tell by your picture that you're a Yamaha fan. I am a 790 Adv R owner along with several dirt bikes and a 1200GS. The 790 is the perfect bike for me. No issues and since I am doing a lot of off road riding much better than the GS. I always love to see opinions of people who have never owned a bike and are experts now.
@rockafella16905 жыл бұрын
Not a great looking bike in my opinion. Good bit of kit though otherwise. Very surprised about the seat height - I sat on one and it seemed very small for an adventure bike. 🤔

Did you sit on the "R" like this one?
@rockafella16905 жыл бұрын
@@TheMissendenFlyer Hmmm I'm pretty sure I sat in them both as the 2 of them were at the KTM stand. 880mm isn't short though for sure.
@2fly19744 жыл бұрын
Why would you buy this bike if it's too tall for you and you don't want to take it off-road. Then you buy the R version which is the taller of the two models and is more off-road specific which they intentionally put a shorter windscreen on it even though the more road oriented bike has the taller screen on it which seems to better suit your needs. Seems like your gripe is should be about buying the wrong model.

You stuck to the road, which is 50% of the subject for this bike, yet formed an opinion!
