KTM installing the tech on the bike, having a trial mode, and then removing it as an additional cost!? Not a strategy that should be encouraged 👎

Absolute scam. The stuff is on the bike when you buy it. It’s yours, you already paid for it. For them to then disable it is outrageous. What’s more, I can’t see an extra £3k for the KTM over the Yamaha. I’ve owned 4 KTM’s and love them but this is a piss take. I’ll take an MT09 please.

The reason why I choose to go with Yamaha is because of KTM's greedy business decision to lock its features behind a paywall. Its reliability is already assumed to be questionable, but now we have to pay even more to use the bike at its fullest. Just shows the company's true intent with their customers.

Agreed.....I been jonesing for the MT09 for years, just get stuck in analysis paralysis mode with the 890, now glad I did. I think the 2024 MT09 is clearly a much better MT09. You didn't mention the turning radius changes for the MT09? Which was always a beef with the prior MT09s. Does that compare with the Duke's? Also, the new Duke's exhaust can be replaced with a slip on exhaust can - have to switch out to a complete whole exhaust system on the MT09. Neither one of those issues are deal breakers tho for me and the new MT09. My only problem now is age - my age (in my mid 70's) Do I still want to ride a performance oriented bike (last bike was a ZX10R - 2006, sold in 2014 and yes, took a moto class last year to make sure I still could even ride, lol))or just buy and easy going cruiser....nah....only live once, yeah? How do you compare a KTM that has WP suspension with a standard MT-09? That's no where near the best MT-09 you can get. You really should have compared the SP version of the MT-09 instead of the budget version -- or waited for its release to do the comparison. I'm sure the KTM would likely still win out on handling but the comparison would have been much more accurate than going with the budget suspension bike. Otherwise, this was a fairly good review.

Yamaha for me hands down. Biggest issue in town for me though is the turning angle. It was a while since I tried it but it stays very vivid in my memory as it can be downright bike dropper. The 2024 is still upright but with the additional constraint of that seat restricting movement rearward. The 2021-2023 MT-09 allowed the rider to move further up the seat to elongate and stretch out over the tank to get more horizontal and closer to the bike. Make some slight modification to the seat of the 2021-2023 MT-09 and get a seamless long seat ideal for greater movement on the bike. Not possible with the 2024 bike. For anyone serious about riding position the 2021-2023 bike can be modified with a Woodcraft clip on with shorter risers, and rear sets that raise the pegs up and to the back towards the rear wheel. If you look at a sport bike like the CBR1000RR you can see that the rear sets are only a couple inches in front of the rear wheel and the back of the seat is almost above the rear axle. It is possible to replicate this rider triangle on the 2021-2023 bike and not on the 2024.

I ve got a new MT09 /before I had a Street Triple 2013). LOVE my MT! I didnt try the new KTM my friend did who also has a ( 2022 )MT and he didnt like it. He said the Yamaha has better brakes and engine, cheaper and just a better bike in everything.

I have had no problems with a 2020 KTM 1290SAS, but do I think it will outlast my 2005 FJR1300? No way. So I think your choice comes down to how long you plan to keep the bike.

KTM builds bikes that are exciting and fun to ride, but they struggle with electrical issues, and now with cam failures in the LC8c engine, my confidence in KTM's ability to effectively resolve these problems has diminished. On the other hand, Yamaha, with its CP3 engine, excels in both longevity and quality.

@MOTOBOB In Canada the MT09 SP and 990 Duke with the tech pack is the same price. Only a few hundred difference. What would you recommend if that was the case?

They are not "close" except maybe on paper. Drove both back to back and they are completely different characters. I preferred 990. Buy the one that makes you smile.

I’m a KTM 790 owner so it would have to be the Yamaha for me based on reliability and customer satisfaction alone. KTM are constantly leaking and now with the camshaft failures at the 3rd service and KTM charging you £2.5k to replace it after a 3 month wait I would go near a KTM again.

All in all, it's definitely true. At the same time, there are countries where KTM received all the technology at no extra cost. In addition, in those countries, KTM has a 4-year warranty, which is very significant.

For me absolutely the MT09 because of reliability and yes I owned a KTM once , nothing wrong with it but the reliability of Japanese products are legendary

The MT09 will be far more reliable. 790's and 890's suffered from oil leaks and corrosion issues. The styling thing is subjective and was daft to include it really.

I would say no to the ktm for the extra cost to unlock the features that should be included. They are 1 step away from charging you by the KM for the stuff. Could you imagine? you going down the highway and boom, your cruise control expires. On the track in the corner? boom, race mode expired, 20% reduction in HP....

The MT line is just not nice to look at. The frame, the exhaust, even the engine. I want to like them because their motors are so good, but they lack soul compared to the KTMs. Having said that, the Yamaha is no doubt a better value.

I’m buying the MT09 SP. it’s still cheaper than the KTM and I’m sure handles better. Plus I disagree that the KTM looks better! Unfortunately there isn’t a category for reliability which Yamaha wins hands down!

Hvis du bor tæt på grænsen ligger der en finfin dealer lige over grænsen til Tyskland. Ellers Jens W i Roskilde (super god!) eller drengene i Horsens. Pålideligheden læser man meget om her på yt og nettet. Mange klager over olielækage.

If you buy a new KTM 890, 990 etc, assuming it continues to work and the KTM dealer supports you through all the gremlins… you lose a lot on resale because everyone is suspicious of the thing dying on them and needing an overly expensive repair. After my experience with an 890 duke R, I won’t be putting another pumpkin in my garage. First bike in 40years that I’ve had any significant problems with.

Had a look at both bikes recently. The MT is pretty much as as it appears in the pictures/videos, but the KTM in the flesh was quite underwhelming. The all black frame, engine, and underpinnings are not sufficiently offset by the KTM signature orange, and the bike is much less visually exciting/interesting than the 890R. With a price in Aus of just North of A$20K it's just not worth the almost A$3K over the Yamaha IMO..
