Hi, I am Tom and I am the rider on the KTM 1190R that is in the vid. I have been very entertained by the comments on this vid and thought I should provide some facts. There is another guy on a non R racing in the 5th race in this vid. My KTM Adventure 1190R is a 2014 and weighed almost 500lbs on the track scale. If I removed racking and crash bars and stuff it might get to 470ish. I weigh 215 in my birthday suit so around 240 suited to race. The front tire is a Continental TKC 80 and the back is a TKC 70. If you look closely you will see that the front of the bike is strapped to lower it. The bike has a Yosh pipe, power commander and Rottweiler air cleaner. My best pass was a 11.10 at 124mph. I typically 60 ft in the high 1.60's. The vid shows bracket racing where each rider provides a dial in to the hundredth of a second and the slower rider gets a head start by the difference of the dial ins. I am no Chris Birch but have taken the bike on some reasonably challenging off road sections including steep creek bed's with baby head boulders on the ground. The weekend immediately before this race I rode offroad to the Northwest corner of Vancouver Island. The weekend after I rode in the KTM Adventure Rallye in SilverStar Mountain in Kamloops...all without major changes. My team won the Ready to Race award for being the fastest group on the A loop (offroad). I don't hate any make of motorcycle and love them all and the first race was against my good friend on his Victory. This has been the most amazing motorcycle I have owned (out of over 30) but sadly I have sold it. Hoping to get one of the first KTM Adventure 790's to come to Canada!

Nope. Can't keep front down on a high POWERED, high center of gravity bike like that KTM. It's got 102 foot-pounds torque you know. Shifting hard to third gear results in stand-up (no clutch but needed) wheelies with that KTM. Owned three. he is feathering the throttle out of the hole to keep the from wheel close.

It just amazes me at how riders slam other bikes. Are we all a bunch of kids in a sandbox? As long as we’re having fun, isn’t that the point. I have both a Harley and a KTM 1190. They are both great bikes in their own right. My Harley gives me the feeling of driving an old muscle car. Might not be the fastest out there, but it’s far from slow and most importantly it makes me smile. My KTM is like a sharp knife in that it’s edgy and will slice up everything in its path. Both are great bikes in their respective ways.

It's not the bikes, it's the HD owners, they are arrogant as hell!! so seeing them lose or broke down on the side of the road is kinda like a type justice, you don't see this type of venomous reactions towards no other manufacturers. Its brutal but it's also kinda deserved. I'm a Dodge guy but this new breed of Dodge owners are getting just as bad as the Harley guys, the owners can make other people despise a brand.

If they find that the Harley-Davidson motorcycle can not even out perform a small bike like the KTM then they may start to think that what they have been told by Harley-Davidson may just be a crock of expensive shit ya all know what I am talking about here. I ride with guys and some have HD bikes and I can tell you now that most any other motorcycle is better than a Harley-Davidson. When they get over "owning" a HD they sell them at a BIG discount and buy another brand of bike. They feel stupid that the HD sales people conned them out of so much money just to own a motorcycle. They are paying these shit boxes off for years when other riders have payed a third of what a Harley costs for a better motorcycle, have payed it off and are riding free. So Doug Feilding don't bullshit to me as I know what is going on here. Dreamers buy Harley-Davidson's but a dream can not be sustained when reality sets in. Ever wonder why Harley riders sit apart from everybody else at the hotel, well it's so they can wank among themselves because the other riders there are sure not interested in talking Harley-Davidson to anybody.

Tom is a well seasoned vet on the drag strip and also does a lot of off road riding too. I'm pretty sure it's a 1st gear launch and he's very ok with a wheelie now and then :) In my limited experience I've never known the second gear launch to work better than just figuring the 1-2 shift out with rpm / clutch control and obvious practice.

I roadraced motorcycles years ago. I was in a 24 hour race with three other riders we shared a 750 Honda. Also entered in that race was a factory prepped harley. The first machine to expire was the Harley Davidson. I just strolled past their pit while the mechanics were evaluating the damage on the Harley. I had never seen a motorcycle engine that looked like it exploded . I could see the crankshaft and the rod for the front cylinder thru a hole about as big as a grapefruit in that engine. It did not even last half an hour.. that was a factory effort at Nelson ledges during One of their 24 Hour roadraces they held there every June... Just a footnote, The Ducati that won the 24 hour race that year, also won the 24 hour race the previous year. The only work that was done on the Ducati between the two 24hr races a year apart,was an oil change I still can’t rationalize why anyone would buy a Harley.. I mean it defies logic

Greg a stock 1250 vrod with exhaust and a tune will go right at a 10 second quarter if the person riding it knows how to run it. The rest of these bikes on here have a serious power to weight ratio disadvantage. Harleys are heavy. That sportster is 500 lbs dry. That KTM is maybe 400lbs?

I ride a harley. And its for the looks, sound, and also the soul and the feeling it gives me. You know that KTM feeling? Yeah, no such thing. These Harley‘s are not 1/4, 1/2 mile meaningless drag bikes! They have much more to offer. They are 50,000 mile cruisers, meant to clarify a ride, not to blur it. KTM is a 0-120mph in 12 secs offroad adventure bike, which, to me, is the epitome of overkill. But hey, if you want to win a drag race, nothing better than racing against a bike that isn’t designed to win a race. Now take that to a dirt oval, and its a different story with those flat track harleys.

I may be wrong of course but I doubt the Harley (or Victory ) riders expected to win, they know they're running against a faster bike. My bet is they are just having fun and really just wanted to see how fast they could get their bikes down the track. If so , I say good for them , enjoy the ride you have.

I always get a chuckle when a harley is making a crap load of noise and barely accelerating. If all you want to do is go in a straight line down the freeway get poor millage and spend lots of time in the shop talking to other harley owners, then go get one. But if you really want to have some fun I suggest you buy a motorcycle. Its a great experience.

@@DaEVOthefreak AT and a stock harley would actually be close. A 1690cc stock harley puts out around 85hp and and 108 ft/lb of torque. The AT isn't far behind with pretty much the same HP bt only 67 ft/lb of torque. While the AT is down on torque it weighs a lot less.

I'm curious to know how many HD's actually have over 100k miles and still run (without being rebuilt). I know an hd rider that purchased a 36k street glide but won't ride it unless there is less than 10% chance of rain, temp is 72 to 78 degrees, and very low pollen count (unfortunately not a joke). On the other hand, I do have a couple of hd friends that do actually ride, they average 20+k per year on their machines and a few busa friends that have well over 200k on their bikes. I only have 102k on my 01 (not rebuilt/normal maint).

Harleys are great for what they are. Vintage designed motors that are reliable and make passable power. You cant expect that to keep up with a modern liquid cooled, high compression, high RPM motor. Its like winning the field day race at the retirement home.

New 790 looks horrendous, which sucks because I could use an everyday commuter that can hit the trails on the weekend. I care more about performance than fashion but good god are they ugly.

I'm sorry but Harleys have never been about performance. I don't know why Harley owners think they have something to prove. It's no contest. The Japanese just know what they're doing when it comes to designing motorcycles. It's historically written. After we won WW2 we didn't allow them to design airplanes so most of there brightest engineers went from airplanes to motorcycles. That's why most manufacturers don't have an answer for the big top 4. Ducati has come close but Harleys will never match up. They don't want to anyway. They're more about style than form or function.

I have a Harley (Roadking) and a KTM 1290 SA. The KTM is the funnest bike I've ever owned. And at 62 years old I've owned a bunch. It is scary fast. 160HP on a 450 lb scooter makes for fast times.....Road it up Pikes Peak last summer and all over in Moab,UT. Amazing motorcycle!

Ah, Bracket Racing, like playing with a handicap in golf to make the play more interesting. I have the 1290 Super Adventure R, and yes, it will smoke a lot of bikes if one can keep the front wheel anywhere near the ground. Same torque as a Hayabusa, but not the same wheelbase or gearing :-)

Not one HD guy trashed another motorcycle here. Ride what you ride and have fun. The Harleys are also heavier. Usually HD has more torque which gets it off the line quicker sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't.

Staggered start and he looks like he's dicking about or struggling to control the bike fully. The KTM is a huge v twin as well , makes way more torque than the Harley's and lots more horse power. Probably close to twice the torque and twice the hp of the Harley's. With those engines it's more about not flipping the bike over, they'll power wheelie in every gear with traction control off.

So the wife and I are supposed to put on astronaut helmets and go cruisin' on a butt- ugly, high rpm KTM because it finishes the quarter mile a few feet faster than my Harley? I don't think so. The KTM is not for cruisin' and it's really big and heavy for a dirt bike. And their Super Duke is a naked sport bike, also not a cruiser. Had I still had my 1200 Yammie V-Max, and I was anywhere near close to that track, I would have been interested in going up against that KTM rider. Sadly, I traded in the V-Max for a 1700 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad that I do touring on. Gotta give credit to the KTM rider. He knows the bike he's on.

KTM 1290 Adventure ( let's say it's a 1290) has 125 hp and 81 ft/lb of torque at the rearwheel), so not that much more, the difference is the 'dead' weight and that's where the harley shines, a lot of dead weight !!
