Back in the early 80's, I was the cook at the Pelican Cafe. At 0:37 you can see the alley that runs between Zelda's and what used to be the Pelican, (I don't know what it is now). It's been many years now and I am retired and a very long way from Calif, but despite the storm damage, I enjoyed seeing familiar scenes of the village. Watching this reminds me very much of the Flood of 1982. At the time I was living on the corner of Porter and West Walnut in Soquel, across the street from Soquel Elementary so I saw that flood up close.

I remember the Pelican and the two for one, I was eating there at the time and water was splashing up the windows...Water all the way up to Dukes Deli, I think it was Portola st??? AND Mugs Away the last business going up Soquel road when leaving town. The pier was closed for a time after that storm for repairs, and it was 40 years ago at this time. I was at the time caretaking for Humphrey up Soquel rd near the "Y" where the last chance gas station was. Fun times.

Flood in 1982 much worse. About 2 feet of the beach at Capitola just dissapeared. There were huge redwood trees on the beach. Soquel was a real mess when the bridge there had a huge backlog of debris and the Sopuel Creek spilled out around it and flooded the whole town. The creek was normally about 5 feet wide. That night it was at least 15 feet high. Redwoods careened down the canyon. Huge mud slides that took out the sides of mountains. Over 20 inches of rain in one day!

After the 1989 earthquake, when Hwy 1 was still closed, we had to drive to work through parts of Watsonville which were in a flood zone. At that time there was no other way. Since that time either the city and/or county allowed a large number of homes to be built in that same flood zone we used to drive through where there were no homes. It should be a surprise to nobody that same area is flooded again.

Are you on the San Lorenzo River? In the winter of 1965, we lived between Hwy 9 and the river, in a neighborhood called Gold Gulch. We could not see the River from our back porch or yard; had to walk up over a dirt dike that had been built years before to try and protect the properties there. To get to the River, which rarely was higher than our shins when we went in to cool off in the summertime, we had to walk across the small dike, and then walk down a ladder’s steps that went down around 25+ feet to the small “beach” on the River. We could easily wade across the river over to a small, sandy beach on the other side where there was a tall, straight up cliff, up above which was Henry Cowell State Park, and I still love to think of the sound of that narrow gauge railroads whistle we’d hear throughout the day. One rainy winter night I looked out our back window into what I expected to be nothing but pitch black. Instead, I saw the dim reflection of the moon! I ran to the back porch and saw tree branches and lawn chairs and all sort of other stuff quickly floating by…on the top of the river’s water! The river had risen so that it went from the top of our yard’s idle across to the top of the “cliff across the river! That had to be something close to 25+ feet! There was a rock at the end of River Rd., which was just two doors down from our house, that had a line painted on it, and everyone was keeping a very close eye on it, because if the water reached that line by a certain time, it meant the river water would back up River Rd. onto Hwy. 9, and then drop back down and flood all of Gold Gulch! It had happened many times in the past. Fortunately, we were “saved” by about 2”! For a 15 year old, it was both scary and exciting! How is the River holding with these storms? Stay safe!

Why don't you use those freeway dividers is concrete ones to keep the water from coming in it'll keep the damage down to a low and may not keep the mud out or the sand regardless but that would work on a long highway area double stack them if you have to but I'll keep the water out and probably put some sandbags on the side of it as well just a thought just to keep your city out of danger

So you think you know better than the 100s of engineers that have been studying and working on these areas for decades. LOL. They do the best they can, balancing costs while maintaining the feeling of a cozy village that attracts tourists and their money. Sure, build up a 10 foot concrete wall and surround the whole village - then who's going to want to go there? The businesses are well aware of these situations and have prepared as best they can. This happens every 10 years or so - it's just the cost of doing business.

This was bad, but anyone that was here in January, 1982 and 83, this is not as bad as that, when @55 people were killed by floods and downed trees in Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Boulder Creek, and Corralitos. That was bad, very, very bad. The Weather Channel has never mentioned it, but it was THE storm of the century.

Over the past 6 mths, from PEI and Newfoundland, to Daytona and Fort Myers and now the Santa Cruz area of California, North Americans are seeing what is happening to those who live and work right on the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines. Maybe these are normal once in a 100 yr events OR maybe they are the result of a sea level rise of just a few inches and the new normal. Time will tell.

I would say that the future for any restaurant in Capitola on the beach better be more like a platform boat BARGE placed on 4 lifting pierss that can be lifted the 5 feet for future storms. Not really that impossible. 3 units brought in and dragged up 50 x 20 locked together 4+ feet high. or welded steel perimeter around the whole buildng and pumps to keep leaks low. Make the restaurant storm proof reinforced on Surf Side. Make it a sealed box to 8' but in place, their buildings are maybe only 60x50 and the damage is more than that the cost of doing it right. If the string of property owners of the 7 units wish to just fix them; its a msitake. It will just happen again. I'd never insure them. If they want to retain the iconic space fro the next 40 years- they have to really invest. Thanks Zelda and others for acting as seawall, sorry for your natural loss. Summer will be upon us soon. If you build on the beach you cannot complain about nature wrecking what was foolishly placed. It is what it is.
