This condition is referred to as an umbilical hernia medically. Behind the navel, there are abdominal muscles that connect strongly between the navel and the underlying abdominal organs.
These muscles are usually well-bonded, but if there's a defect, like a small hole, the intestines can push through.
This causes the intestines to move in and out, especially when the baby strains, has a bowel movement, or coughs, leading to navel swelling. Sometimes, it returns to its normal position.
In some cases, the navel might need gentle adjustment with a finger. Usually only thyroid profile test, is indicated in an umbilical hernia. If the thyroid levels are normal, the condition is managed with wait&watch observation.
📌However, if the baby cries continuously due to tummy pain, and the swelling does not subside or turns reddish, it could be a sign of an emergency, and immediate consultation with a doctor is required.
In 90% of cases, the condition resolves by the age of two, so there's no need to worry unnecessarily about it.
