Hello! My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Kubachi language.
Kubachi are the people of a single village, the village of Kubachi. It is located in the mountains of the Caucasus, within the Russian Federation in Dagestan, at an altitude of 1800 meters above sea level. Although the Kubachi language belongs to the Dargin group of the Nakh-Dagestanian language family, it is significantly different from the languages of its group and is not mutually intelligible. The exact number of Kubachians today is unknown, but it is estimated to be around 18-20,000 people. However, the number of speakers of the language is rapidly declining, with people, especially children, switching to Russian. It can be said that the Kubachi language is a dying language.
Kubachi has been known since the 5th century AD as the "Kingdom of Zirihgeran," which included about 10-15 other villages. Zirihgeran translates from Persian as "chainmail makers/armorers." In the Middle Ages, it disintegrated, and Kubachi became an independent village. Today, the village is called Kubachi, which also translates as "chainmail makers" but from Turkic.
Traditionally, the Kubachi were engaged in the production of weapons and armor, as well as making jewelry. Kubachi products gained wide recognition far beyond Dagestan and Russia. They continue to practice the craft of their ancestors today, participating in various exhibitions and winning prizes. The items are traditionally made of silver, covered with intricate engraving, chasing, niello, and enamel. Children learn engraving from an early age, a complex and labor-intensive task that Kubachians have mastered brilliantly since ancient times.
Kubachian women wore a traditional headgear called a "kaz." Even today, the older generation of women still wears it. Men transitioned to European-style clothing back in the 1930s and 1940s.
For a long time, around 500-700 years, the people of Kubachi/Zirihgeran practiced Zoroastrianism under the influence of the Persian Empire. Later, they converted to Christianity. According to sources, there was a time when adherents of three religions lived in Kubachi: Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Christianity. When neighboring villages adopted Islam in the 12th century, the Kubachians fought for their religion for another 200 years, and only in the 14th century, after a crushing defeat, were they forced to convert to Islam. However, traces of Zoroastrianism are still evident in some customs of the Kubachi.
This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.

The Dagestanian languages are so fascinating! Just an entire language family filled with crazy consonants tucked in the mountains, only a few kilometers away from eachother, and yet so different. Love seeing more of them represented on this channel

All of the languages near the Caucasus mountain range are so incredibly unique. I wish one of these days we're able to revive a large majority of them. ❤

*FUN FACT* During the 19th century, the Russian emperors and high nobility commissioned Kubachi silver. Queen Victoria was given knives from Kubachi by Emperor Alexander III. Currently, silver handicrafts made of Kubachi silver is owned and exhibited by a lot of museums such as The Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, the Met in New York City, and The Louvre in Paris. *Арал вати!*
