Hi, Simon. For Kubilai's conquest of Java, I don't think mysterious disease was the main reason of his failure. The main reason was he didn't understand Java's political dynamic. At that time when he sent his first ambassador there, Java was led by Kertanegara from Singhasari. This king was the one who cut the ambassador's ears. When Kubilai was furious and decided to send army there, Kertanegara was already killed by Jayakatwang. Obviously, it led to a huge confussion in Kubilai's army, since...well, the Java king was no more and there was a whole new situation. This situation was used by Raden Vijaya, Kertanegara's son-in-law, to ask help from Kubilai's army and promise that he would be a submissive to the Mongol. Thus, his and Kubilai's army attack Jayakatwang. When the coast was cleared, Raden Vijaya attacked Kubilai's army and forced them to retreat. They finally decided to return to China.

The International historians underrate the Prince of Hưng Đạo. However, we ourselves often overlook the great leadership of the two Emperors. While the Prince of Hưng Đạo was assigned command of the army, the two emperors were far more than figureheads. They organized the councils of Bình Than and Diên Hồng, they came to frontline to inspire and motivate soldiers at critical moment, they shared hardship with the army during the retreat, and they personally commanded an army in the final offensives. The battle in which Sogetu was killed was not commanded by the Prince of Hưng Đạo but by the two Emperors themselves. Also it was the two Emperors who gave important instructions to generals such as Trần Nhật Duật and Trần Khánh Dư during key battles such as Hàm Tử and Vân Đồn. Without the decisive victory at Vân Đồn, which was made possible by the Higher Emperor's firm dealing with Trần Khánh Dư, Bạch Đằng would be impossible.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the amazing song “Xanadu” by the band Rush, from the ‘70s. It’s still my favorite song of theirs, and borrows lyrics from S.T. Coleridge’s classic poem, which I coincidentally, just read two evenings ago🙂. Edit: I have to correct something that I wrote- I reread my comment and realized that it could be misconstrued- I meant to say that the song was from the 70s- not that the band was from the 70s. They are (were)- but also released excellent albums in the 80s, 90s, and on into the 2000s. They’re incredible, and sadly lost their genius lyricist and the best percussionist in modern music, Neil Peart, earlier this year. Anyway- just felt obligated to point that out- I have a ton of respect for these incredible artists (uh, if you couldn’t tell 😆). I’m happy that others were thinking of them too. Stay safe and healthy, everyone-

Once again great nourishment for the brain. The task of conquering, sustaining and then expansion along with good offense, defense, plus delegation. It's hard enough ruling over one's own thoughts. The ambition for some to desire and acquire it on that extreme is amazingly beyond my scope of comprehension. However thank you for awesome narration of another interesting time. Keep the blue poppin and stay safe. 🤗💯💙

It's nice to hear about Kublai for once instead of Ghenghis. Also, if anyone reading this doesn't know what Mongolian throat singing is, KZbin it now. For some reason though, I doubt many of this channels subs aren't already aware.

you really should've mentioned Kaidu and how he nearly yoinked northern China from Kublai, and how Kublai took to the field against him on a mobile fortress carried by 4 elephants

1. Genghis Khan may have tons of kids but only four are from his first wife, Borte, and those four are the only ones are qualified to be the successor. Genghis Khan chose Ogedei, the third child, to be the successor of Khan was because of the other three kids are having different reasons to inherit Khanate. Jochi, the first child, and Chagatai, the second child, are rivals of each others. Choose either of them will likely ended with a Mongol Khanate to split. The youngest one, Tolui, is inheriting the home land as the Mongol tradition. This decision was made before Genghis's Khwarazm conquest therefore both Jochi (Golden Horde) and Chagatai (Chagatai) established their own Khanates from the conquered Khwarazm territories. 2. Did you just skipped Guyuk Khan? He is the actual successor of Ogedei. Guyuk is the drunken Khan and which is one of the reason that his reign is short-lived. Think that you may have mixed Ogedei and Guyuk into one person. 3. Mongke's obsession with China may have to do with how he became the successor of Guyuk. European campaign was largely Golden Horde's own raid after Odegei's death. Batu is the successor of Jochi and inherited Golden Horde. Guyuk, Mongke, and Kublai are all used to be under Batu's command. Batu wasn't founded of Odegei (Guyuk) clan and decided to aid Tolui (Mongke and Kublai) clan as the new Great Mongol Khan. 4. Actually, China was split for even longer period of time. Tang Dynasty after An Lushan Rebellion in 755 was ruling an fractural empire since Tang delegated powers to local warlords titled Jiedushi. They often ruling their own territories of their own liking and rarely respect the authority from Chang'an which eventually one of them ended Tang Dynasty for good. It lasted for 520 years.
