Nice video. Wish I found this prior to diving into my pump. Similar kubota 3 cylinder in a jacobson turfcat. Hadn't ran in 10+ years, water in the fuel. I pulled the injector pump out. I was difficult to get out because the throttle slider was frozen and it ended up breaking on the gears that rotates the plunger inside. (slightly older design to yours). Called kubota, they tell me that dont sell parts for the pump but they would end up sending it to a diesel shop like D&W. These guys were great. Similar problem with finding parts, I send in some pictures of the pump and have the parts the next day. Got the thing running after a bit of time. Wish there were some videos of pump assembly, trade secrets i believe. Hi from Alden

The injection timing is set by adding or subtracting the shims under the injection pump. This Kubota has fixed timing like most lawnmower gas engines. A lot of automotive diesel injection pumps have variable injection timing. I installed a Kubota 905 diesel in a Geo Metro and it had driveability issues because of the fixed injection timing.
@PetesGarage5 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I can see how that would work.

I was thinking about doing the same, 3cyl kubota in a geo , did you ever get it right? How is the power? Could a turbo be added? Milage? Thanks would appreciate some info, did you build a adapter?
@kimmer62 жыл бұрын
@@redfuel6bt Power...terrible. Going from 54 hp to 24 hp makes it a flat land vehicle only. I forgot about the car long ago but still have it. It's not a simple swap at all. Nothing fits. I built the adapter, modified a Suzuki Swift flywheel, clutch, starter, and had to make a vacuum pump to work the brakes. The oil pan hangs low and needs mods to provide clearance. The worst part is that the oil filter is exactly in the way of the right axle. A complex adapter needed to be made to switch it over to the front side of the engine. The fixed timing injection pump makes driveability poor. The governor had to be modified to hit 3600 rpm from fixed 1800. When you were ready to shift and hit 3600, the power cut back completely. But it got around 70mpg during the week I tested it. The registration expired and California would not renew it without the original engine. I have a turbo but it still sits on a shelf. I used to build random things like that but nearing age 70, no longer have the interest. I build solar generators for fun now.

Interesting video Pete. I've acquired an engine in the same range to rebuild in part for entertainment and also to do an engine rebuild video for my channel (and have found the workshop manuals online). Just a point of note that the D902 is one out of a series of similar engines, including the one I bought (a D662), D722 and the D902. They seem to also use the same pumps on engines like the Perkins K103-07 3 cylinder diesel (Which I've also bought). Presumably the same issue would apply to those and indeed all similar diesels.

I had a power loss problem I found number 3 cylinder (that's the cylinder if your standing in front of the engine looking toward the rear of the engine), was dead, and also had a loud clatter noise in the rear of the engine. I pulled the injector out of number 3 cylinder and done a compression test which resulted in a real low compression reading. Just for the fun of it I took a piece of bailing wire about a foot long and lowered it into the cylinder until it touched the top of the piston then I reached around to the front of the engine and grabbed the pulley and turned the pulley back and forth and found I had to turn the pulley as much as two inches in either direction to get any response out of the piston. Immediately I knew where the clattering was coming from and the cause of the misfire and low compression. So I pulled the oil pan off and found the rod bearing had spun and the rod itself was bent in the number 3 cylinder. So at this time I'm in the middle of rebuilding it. Just wanted to share my story on how I diagnosed my engine problems.

I know this video is 3 years old but here goes. I removed the injection pump and everything looked fine. I reinstalled, but I'm not sure if i lined up the pin into the shuttle. I had the injectors tested and 2 were bad and 1 barley working. So i changed them out and started it up. The engine is now making a clicking noise i didn't hear before, and smoking more than before. Could i just take the injection pump off and try to reset, or will the timing be off now?

You have to check the lifters on the pump

Hi Pete. Thanks for the video. I was chasing the source of a broken pin I found in the oil pan when I pulled the pump. I also found a dangling spring there by the shuttle. One end of it is longer than the other. I cant figure out where it attaches to and from. Did you have any springs to attach when you reinstalled the fuel pump? I have an electrical external shutoff not the one attached to the timing cover. Thanks.

It depends an the pump model. Try looking it up from the stamping on the pump

Great video Pete, Just purchased a Kubota X 1140 Diesel and was curios if its normal that it moderately smells like too much diesel coming from the exhaust? It also blows a little smoke when I initially start it up. I have a Kubota SVL 75 and does not smell as much burning diesel as the RTV. Possibly the Kubota SVL 75 may have more emission control components than the RTV?

Blue smoke is oil. You may have spun a bearing. Something is not right.

On a Kubota diesel -3 cylinder motor-I was told a new head gasket was put on recently. HOwever, when I put water in the radiator, oil came out the top of the motor-from the oil fill plug. Can you tell me what is wrong and how to fix it? Please and thank you so much. Dave

I have the D905 (similar) in a Vermeer S600TX mini skid steer - manual says oil change with filter is 5.1L. dipstick shows waaaayyyy over full. removed about 1.5l and its just above the full mark - is the shallow oil pan common on these? Pretty sure that mine has a shallow oil pan and Vermeer forgot to change it in their manuals. any damage likely from being run overfull? it ran a long time as previous oil change shows it had way too much in it as well.

If it didn't cause a leak there is no damage.

Check the fuel supply first. Try running it right out of a separate can of fuel to eliminate the entire fuel supply system.

I could not find the springs anywhere and nobody would give me a part number
@hawssie16 жыл бұрын
If you want to use this long term its way better to replace the pump as if one spring had broke its a sign the rest is on its way, The injection pump is a very important part on a diesel engine like this, its much more so then on a gas engine. It is like the fuel pump ,carb(along with the injector) and the distributor on a gas engine, as it controls throttle fuel delivery and combustion timing. And they are machined to very high tolerances, with high pressures. These small inline units aren't nearly as complicated as rotary ones but their still very touchy and don't lend themselves to tampering and wrenching.
@PetesGarage6 жыл бұрын
@@hawssie1 Thanks Nick. I replaced the pump on this one.
