You know the game devs put a lot of sauce into making this game when they not only add that feature, but make it an integral part of the world and mechanics. They could have easily just disregarded the dogs around the town and made it easy for some items to be found, but they said "why not dogs?"

There's a fair bit of graffiti in Tokyo around cool, "young" areas like Shibuya and Meguro, though not to the same extent as in North America. Lots more stickers than spraypaint, though. All kinds of weird stickers covering utility boxes and signposts in Daikanyama, Koenji, Nakameguro, etc. Vandalism, sure, but not graffiti. I also think a lot of the younger people in the area like the look and think it's cool and urban or something. Old people, not so much XD

52:18 Since the kasa-obake is supposed to arise from very old umbrellas, it's probably inspired by or related to stories of tsukumogami. Those are tools or objects that "wake up", developing a spirit when they become very old (nominally 100 years old, but that's probably just a poetic way of expressing "really old" or "many years"). So it may be less that the umbrella-spirit has no story than that it's part of a class of stories. [Edited to add: Gab found an in-game entry addressing this later.]
@drazman92 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I was curious, on how the umbrella work! Like there were, full black, thorn black, white and thorn white - as far as I saw. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
@forcesinbalance56852 жыл бұрын
@@drazman9 The kasa-obake isn't the tall Visitor enemies carrying umbrellas; it's the actual umbrella that was hopping around on one leg that Gab chased down. From what I gather from the descriptions, the Visitors mostly represent different kinds of human emotional breakdown. The umbrella-carrying kinds are variations on the "exhausted salaryman" trope--they're born of the emotional states of people who trudge home from their jobs each day, drained by work and the sense that they're regarded as interchangeable parts in a machine. Their featureless faces are loss of identity; the umbrellas shelter them from those looking down on them for signs of rebellion or individuality. Other umbrella-bearing Visitors represent suppressed rage or resentment related to the workplace; I think these carry red or red-tinged umbrellas to show the more violent emotions they're hiding.
@lowkeyobsessedngl2 жыл бұрын
@@forcesinbalance5685 +1 to this. the faceless visitors are entities borne out of negative emotions. greed, anger, etc. the more negative an emotion, the bigger and harder to take down they are. on the other hand, it's really fun watching the headless student uniforms idle around. they sometimes sit on top of vehicles or ledges, on the rare occasion hanging on electrical wires and giggling, like they're just having fun. of course these ones are borne out of the frustrations of being a student / uncertainty of students' futures, so their manifestation is literally just wanting to break out and take a breather. sad you have to take them down tho.

I can’t imagine there being anyone more perfect to watch do a let’s play of this game than Evelien. She’s so well versed in Japanese culture, history, and of course language that she makes a game that I wouldn’t be interested in due to how foreign it all is to me (I don’t know anything about Japanese spirits, folklore, or street food) into an enjoyable way to learn about a topic that I have almost no knowledge of. I wish learning history at school had been this much fun (not that my school offered history that mentioned Japan in any way).

I think that Balto and Togo of the Nome Diphtheria antitoxin run in Alaska in 1925 definitely rival the one depicted in the statue in this game as bestest boys. Balto has been memorialized as a statue in Central Park NYC since 1925, and as people began to hear the story of Togo and realized he was an unsung hero who ran 264 miles of the run compared to the average dog's 31 at the age of 12, a statue of him was erected in Seward Park NYC in 2001. They've both also got movies about them as well from Disney. Without these dogs the Diphtheria epidemic in Nome Alaska would have been so much more deadly. They saved countless lives. Shout out to the best boys out there!

This game is too cool! Thank you for continuing this series! I'm all for the side quests and learning all the things! The Yokai that pretends to be a wall reminds me of a short story someone shared as an unbelievable experience they shared with someone. They were driving along a road they had taken before, where they would turn, only the forest was in its place, and where they thought was a cliff seemed to be the road. They turned towards the trees anyways holding their breath. They were fine; everything was back to normal instantly. So interesting! I'm sorry if the story isn't as originally posted. I can't find the og post I read it from, and I am remembering to the best of my brain!

Was super excited to see part 2!!!! I love this!! I realise now after some of your deep dives there are even deeper meanings to some of the stuff later on in the game and got me thinking about life and death in general. It hits so close to home. I’m currently on my second playthrough with the difficulty on highest its so intense the enemies have different move sets all together even the basic ones so close quarters core grabs or ground core grabs can be super useful but risky. One of the coolest aspects of this game is how they scaled the parkour it’s the first time I can remember thinking how to actually scale and move around even on my second playthrough. Much love Gab AAA KZbin content right here and I can guarantee this because on any other video my attention span is so short. Looking forward to part 3

Every time I watch Gab's playthroughs of Japanese horror games, all I can think about is how amazingly talented, smart and well rounded of a person she is. I am also absolutely fascinated by her experiences of living in Japan, and I love listening to her translate. It just blows my mind that she's a native Dutch speaker that's fluent in BOTH Japanese and English! (from what I gather she also knows a bit here and there from other lanuages like german and Spanish?) Just learning one new language is fkin hard so I can't even imagine knowing 2!!! I took French for 5 years and Spanish for 2 but could never quite get the hang of it 😅 it's also so impressive that not only can she translate Japanese, but she can translate it to her second learned language (English) with apparent ease. That would be like me actually knowing French and Spanish and translating one to the other. Absolutely mind blowing. Thank you for these incredibly thoughtful and educational vids, Gabs!

In Sweden we don't say the fairies did it, but we do blame Gnomes (which in Sweden have the same name as Santa: Tomten). In folklore a farm could have a Hustomte (house-gnome) that would take care of the farm, but he could also take offence if he was not thanked with some food in the winter and would then cause mischief and bad luck.
