One thing people need to remember is that this is a couchette train, not a sleeper train, and Snälltåget's main target group are young people travelling together. So the quality onboard is never gonna be the same as on a Nightjet service.

Well the service and accomondation aboard Snälltåget are better then on SJ (our other train company going this route) you would for example not have any thing to buy on a night-train with them, the prices are about the same though since there is no competition. But I would never use night train for this route it is to slow, by swapping train in Copenhagen & Hamburg and then using Danish and German trains the trip Berlin-Malmö takes less then 6 hours costing less then 100 €,

@@JimBackabo Thats an awfully optimistic time estimate. All the fastest trains I can find from Copenhagen to Hamburg alone take 4 hours and 45 minutes, and are prone to overcrowding and delays. Plus with transfers and the fastest trains from Hamburg to Berlin taking almost 2 hours, and then it takes 7 hours and 15 minutes to travel between Copenhagen and Berlin on the fastest possible itinary. And of course you gotta add an additional half hour or more to that to get to Malmö, so its close to 8 hours to travel between the 2 anyways. The perfect amount of time to spend a night

Another wonderful video - as usual! I felt sorry for you when you arrived in your room in the dark! Scandinavia is often dark, but trains should have an easy-to-find light-switch! And again, I felt SO sorry that you were given the same bread for supper as you got for breakfast! Denmark (particularly) is very famous for its pastries (and Danish people eat them for breakfast). I would have expected you to receive a pastry (or Danish bacon, which is also famous!) I love your sub-titles on screen and the beautiful way you phrase the words. 18:00 Malmö Central is mostly a through station with trains going in the Citytunnel under the city of Malmö. Night trains, some long distance and local trains still use the old station above ground. At 18:15 you see the beginning of the tunnel. An other odd fact, while the rest of Swedens trains ride on the left side of double tracks, trains switch to right side tracks before Malmö so they are on same side when entering Denmark :)

Very nice trip report! Also that bird at the station in Stockholm is a Jackdaw. Its a small corvid bird, so in the same family as crows. They're quite smart birds and often live in big colonies by train stations or residential areas together with rooks, another crowlike bird that's all black with a grey beak. You'll often find rooks and jackdaws together with hooded seagulls at transit hubs in scandinavia as they scour the area for leftover food by humans, or use human vehicles like buses and cars to crack open things like nuts.

I have been amazed by this series how Kuga can produce such insightful and generally positive videos on his experience in Europe, yet half the comments are complaining about the trains, "apologising" for x, or making inaccurate comparisons to other services. Crazy when that is not the tone Kuga uses at all! He just presents it as it is. Anyway, some of the complaining I'm seeing: 1. On the cost, he bought the equivalent of 6 tickets to book out that compartment. That invalidates all comparisons on cost. People then saying "you paid so much and got that service?" Yes, if I bought 6 economy seats on an aeroplane, I don't suddenly get business class service, I just get 6 in flight meals. Sleeping on a row of economy seats on a plane also is not equivalent to a lie down business class bed, and the same is true here. A comparison with Japan would be buying 6 nobi nobi seats on the sunrise express and expecting the same service as a duluxe room. 2. Having said that, while couchettes are not the most comfortable to sit on, and most are really old now, as beds I think they are fine. I am currently on a trip across Europe and was on a couchette last night and it was better than several of the hotels I had been on (not a very high bar but they are really not as bad as they look. OBB's pillows suck though). 3. I even saw a comment on how the train was not sitting on the platform for any real time before leaving Berlin. (and obviously confused Kuga, understandable for the first time). I don't see how this is a "problem". The board said when the train was leaving, the train left then. These aren't rail tours or cruises, these are scheduled intercity services and Berlin HBF is not a small quiet station that can have a platform occupied by a train for longer than is needed. 4. And on the comments of the train being "old and dirty". No argument about it being old and like every travel enthusiast look forward to seeing what OBB do with the new Nightjet stock. Though I will caution that Caledonian Sleeper got new stock in the last few years and it has resulted in horror stories with its reliability, so appreciate as Kuga does at the end, that you at least get to your destination. I've yet to understand the "dirty" comments in most of these videos, the stations yes but the train interiors seem fine and the exteriors could be better but I'd rather the trains are actually out and doing a service than be polished museum pieces. The best one was the comment on the Eurostar video that the front of the train was dirty. Yes, that happens after you run at 300kph for 2.5 hours during summer. All I can say it that I look forward to visiting Japan, a country where the flies are considerate enough to not get in the way of the trains! Again, good to see that Kuga is not his commentators and appreciates and shows us his different experiences (good and bad!).

I got to experience this train ride back when the train rode onto a ferry. It was a very strange experience being on a train that rolls onto a boat, and then being able to exit the train and hang out on the boat for the duration of the boat ride, then back down to the train when the boat starts getting close to shore. I believe this current route is temporary and that it will go through the Fehrman Belt Tunnel when it's completed.

Travelled in one of these from northern Sweden to Stockholm and it took about the same number of hours. Initially, the kids grumbled about the lack of wifi but as we left in the late evening, they soon settled to sleep and the journey surprisingly didn't feel that long. Yeah, the cabin is only lockable from the inside - hard to go to the dining car when all our valuables are in the cabin so someone had to be left behind.

I mean to be fair the Swedish rail network is one of the most liberalised in the world. There is a lot of competition between different operators, and Snälltåget operates in direct competition with the State railways SJ, and while their trains are not as fast as the X2000, they're competing by having a lower price and better ammenities onboard like a full restaurant. Snälltåget runs several departures per day from Malmö to Stockholm which is their flagship route, but they also operate the Berlin Night Express during the summer, and the Ski train from Malmö and several Danish cities to Austria during December. Ads for it have appeared across train stations in all of Denmark now.

Knowing that you also like ferries: Next time you are in beautiful Stockholm, take the overnight ferry to either Helsinki or Turku/Åbo in Finland. The Stockholm archipelago is, in my eyes, the most scenic and beautiful maritime environment 😀 and the ferries from Viking Line/Silja Line are really top of the range when it comes to car ferries and not dedicated cruise ships. Cheers from Denmark. 🛳

True, still trains in europe are real workhorses, being used by way more people on more tracks and for longer distances than any train could do on a small island like japan. That is like comparing a 1 mio. miles 40ton truck to handwashed, weekend used bentley. Even worse in this case is that sleeper trains are not very common in europe any more since it takes quite long to travel with them. So often those still in use are quite old and in a bad condition.

I would say though that I love Hamburg too much to just go through it without stopping, I'd probably need to spend a few days there and then do the sleeper after the visit. Copenhagen and Malmo are both well worth a visit too, though Copenhagen is the most expensive place I've ever visited (probably still cheaper that Switzerland though!). The bird at the end is a Jackdaw, they're a type of crow and are extremely clever. There are lots of them where I stay and they get to know peoples' faces, so they don't fly away from me anymore!

Thank you. I took Swedish tranis along the coast to the Artic to the Lofoten Islands and the Norwegian trains down to Oslo. I much prefered the Norwegian trains as they are state owned with lots of amenities, and the Swedish trains were owned by private corporations so the cost and routes were more complicated. I was allowed in the sleeper car of the Norwgian train, which was literally a reclining Queen Anne wing chair. I slept so well I almost missed my stop. The Norwegian landscape is better than anything I've seen, even here in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

In spite of there being 10+ train companies in active operation in Sweden, almost none of them are privately owned. The vast majority of trains in Sweden are owned by the government, or run as a collaborative effort between the different local province communes - which effectively still makes them government. Most long distance trains are run by SJ, which is 100% owned by the Swedish government. Ironically, a large number of long distance trains (specifically going far north along the east coast) are run by Vy which is... The Norwegian government owned transit company, so still not private. The only train services in Sweden that are not owned by the communes or government are Snälltåget, MTRX, and FlixTrain - all of which do not run routes north of Stockholm, and the volume of trains they operate pales in comprasion... And even then, since you can book all your trips through SJ or Vy's services for transit in both Norway and Sweden, I don't see how costs and routes are more complicated between the two. This doesn't change the fact that Norwegian routes are far more scenic, I'm just pointing out that finding privately owned train companies in the north of Sweden is pretty much impossible, so the reason for your differences in experience will not be due to whether or not your line is operated by the government.

It's a small type of crow called a western jackdaw. They are very common in Europe. (I just looked them up on Wikipedia: they are closely related to crows, but have now been reclassified as being closely related to crows, but not technically a crow.) In the East (China and Russia, but apparently not Japan) there are Daurian jackdaws.

The bird at the end is a European Jackdaw, and you'd be correct, they are part of the crow family. :) A very intelligent and social bird.

Heh, you keep showing me memories from my youth! Many years ago, my family did a big tour of Scandinavia by car (I would have preferred rail but not my parents). On the third day, we went from Germany to Sweden. In the evening, we found a camping place near Tranås. I well remember when, coming from Lake Vättern on a small road, we reached the main railway in a valley lit beautifully by the low Sun - and you included a clip just at that spot at 21:24 - 21:38!!!

If your wallet's crying at the prospect of $448 to get a *private room* from Berlin to Stockholm, then I double dog dare you to check the fare for a bedroom on Amtrak's California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville. That route, you might have trouble finding *coach* seats at that price. That said, the California Zephyr should definitely be on your radar if you're serious about train travel. The section from Denver heading west through the Rockies is INCREDIBLE. The Southwest Chief is another long route from Amtrak, running from Chicago to LA via the desert southwest. Consider it.

Die Amtrak-Züge bieten aber mehr Komfort. Da gibt es Speisewagen, Aussichtswagen und vor allem Schaffner!
@SoloSeatAdventures
@SoloSeatAdventures Жыл бұрын
Actually, when comparing by distance the $448 is more expensive then Amtrak's Cali Zephyr route. From Berlin to Stockholm the distance is about 650 miles (1050 km) while from Emeryville to Chicago is about 2100 miles (3415 km) or about triple the distance. So $448*3 is about $1348 or about $200 more than a roomette on Amtrak at $1100. You also have meals included in that price for the two day journey. Oh, coach/economy seats are about $250 for the journey, so not that expensive if you can tough out two days in a seat. Now if you want to see expensive, check out VIA's Canadian train in Canada, those are some expensive tickets for a train (outside of Orient Express type trains.)

Where the USB ports are mounted, that was originally the waste garbage can. The wagon was more or less only modernized. A bright spot is the locomotive that pulls the train, although similarly old, but actually very reliable despite the old technology. In Sweden, another locomotive obviously pulled, at 140 Km/h the limit would have been reached with the first one

Old technology tends to be more reliable. Things were built to last back in the day. Nowadays, things are made as cheaply and quickly as possible. Can't have billion dollar companies actually spend money, now can we? They want to make as much profit as possible but do little to truly earn it.

Hi Kuga- glad you had fun on that trip. You should try our Amtrak Zepyher Train that goes from Seattle to California (USA) and also the Empire Builder as well. Also Amtrak has a 27 day vacation package where you can take train trips around the country by Amtrak. :D Thanks for showing your Video. :D Hope all is well with you.

Thanks for the video. It was pleasantly relaxing. The end brought back so many good memories. I have been to Stockholm many times before the pandemic and am very familiar with Stockholm Central Station. I miss Stockholm. It is one of my favorite cities. So beautiful, especially (of course) in summer. There used to be a direct flight from Los Angeles where I live, to Stockholm. So it was very convenient.

A lot of people commenting on the expense. He booked the entire room, so he paid what closer to what would be charged for 6 people. Also, since the rooms are shared normally, having rooms lockable from outside means giving keys for everyone.

Commenting on what you write at 18:00 - it is not quite true that Malmö is a dead-end station. Since 12 December 2010, the "City Tunnel" has been in operation, giving Malmö Central Station an underground level with a through station for long-distance trains to/from Denmark. But at ground level, it is a dead-end station for some long-distance traffic such as your train. I guess shunting is easier at ground level?

How exciting to see this! Malmö is no longer a terminus - since 2010.. If you would have taken the Öresund trains the first station in Sweden would be Hyllie, the site of the Emporia shopping mall and Malmö Arena, and then you would have experienced the City Tunnel, passing through Triangeln ("The Triangle" station, also close to a mall in the city) and finally the Malmö C underground platforms. Usually, only national trains (SJ trains) and Snälltågen start and stop above ground. To them it is a terminus. Though they sometimes pass through the underground station too.

We certainly don't have the best sleeper trains in central europe, but that's what happens when people stop travelling by train and use their own car or fly everywhere. Sleepers popularity has been on the decline for a long time now and companies are therefore cautious to spend money on improving it. I have high hopes for ÖBB's new nightjets, maybe they will mark a change for european sleeper train travel.

Europe has a very well build highway system and every cattle ranch has it's own airport. Therefore sleeer trains are not very common in europe any more since they are slow, expensive and not very comfortable. That is why the last existing ones are mostle refurbished last generation wagons from the 1980s...

And thanks for all the videos you have shared on your channel. Very informative.

I once rode that train but only from Stockholm to Copenhagen. Yes it was via a ferry, so you would go to sleep and wake in the middle of the night to a gentle rocking motion totally different from what you expected. Some Danish trains were the same, riding across massive lakes on ferries. I didn't know on one ride, so when the attendant said 'soon you can get out and take a walk around' I was like, 'what?' Then it was suddenly stopped on a ferry, so you could go for a walk around. "0 minutes, back on board for the journey.

So cool that you went to Scandinavia. What I find quite interesting is that modern Japanese and Scandinavian interior design in some ways look quite similar. I guess that's why "Japandi" is a style. Looking forward to watching this "episode" of your Europe adventure. So going to Oslo. Could my DFDS prediction from Oslo to Copenhagen become true? I thought I saw the deck on a DFDS ferry. Sad you didn't have time to see Stockholm, it's a lovely city.
