Nearly two hundred years old and still going strong, this Collard & Collard Grand Square was made sometime between Clementi's death in 1832 and about c1840. Playing it demonstrates very clearly how there is an almost forgotten repetoire of music for which this kind of instrument was particularly suited: Hummel, Moscheles, Czerny, Clementi, Diabelli, Field, Kuhlau...The piano has been re-strung with a slightly lighter gauge iron wire than it would have had originally and is tuned down a semitone in deference to its age; continual tension on the structure of the instrument has resulted in considerable distortion of the casework over the years.
