Hi Sue - just seen this (typically!). Thank you for noticing - I posted it and 'ran', metaphorically speaking ... feeling a little vulnerable 🙄. Glad you enjoyed it and looking forward to seeing you in July! 😊

I absolutely agree about using this piano for this piece. It is a warm instrument. The treble and bass have different qualities that complement very well. The sound is beautifully clear. Lovely performance, too.

Wow, this is played a la Liz with those escape notes on the right hand. Is it me? But the piano sounds like it is tuned half step lower from concert A. Nice contrast with the melody played an octave lower.
@MrBasilr Жыл бұрын
Hi Eddy, you are right, it's not your ears; the piano is tuned a semitone down out of dereference to its age - the tension had distorted the frame over the years so it seemed a sensible choice.
@eddygonzalez2328 Жыл бұрын
@@MrBasilr Hi there, is that a Collard & Collard piano. I was just checking the wood carving and logo, which is hard to make out. If it is, that's an antique. Sounds great for its age. Can't imagine a piano that old staying tuned. Wooden or metal harp? Still ivory keys?
@MrBasilr Жыл бұрын
@@eddygonzalez2328 Hi Eddy; forgive the delay. Yes that is a Collard & Collard. It's a bit difficult to date it, as records were destroyed, but I would say it was made in the mid-1830s, judging from the name plaque which specifically states: 'Late Clementi Collard & Collard' .. and we know Clementi died in 1832. It has a wooden frame, aside from a metal hitchpin plate on the right hand side. It took quite a bit of restoration to get it playing but stays in tune better than you might think. Still, doing your own tuning does save a LOT in tuners' fees! The action is Collard's own and is a modified version of the standard English square action of the time, if any of that interests you! - sorry, getting carried away - and yes, the keys are of ivory and the casework is flamed mahogany.
@eddygonzalez2328 Жыл бұрын
@@MrBasilr Yes, I bet it's an expensive tuning job. Although it might be a little later than 1830, I'm not sure that any tuner would know how to work his way around the type of single action mechanism of the time. Obviously the knee lever had already been replace with metal pedals as well as other things like the the harp. It is obviously quite well maintained. I said later than 1830 since it sounds like the strings had already been replace with multiple strings per key for balance. Although I don't remember when that happened. Just guessing. Keep taking good care of it.

What's the clavichord like? I am thinking of buying a John storrs and would like any info regarding it......do they go out of tune alot? It will be kept in an unheated garage but it will be dry
@MrBasilr3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Sorry to take time in replying. I’m not quite sure what to say here, but I think I would recommend that you go for a copy of a known historical instrument, such as a Silberman or certainly one that was built in the heyday of clavichord production during the Baroque. The post-war renaissance of early music in the 1950s and 60s was important and enthusiastic, but not necessarily accurate or always well-judged in my opinion - that’s from a slightly longer term perspective! The clavichord may be simple in concept but the balance and design of its ‘action’ is critical to how well it works as a musical instrument. I’ll leave it at that; if you want to pursue this conversation, feel free to question what I’ve said; it’s a bit complex to share! Regards, Basil.

Sorry for the delay. I have a John Storrs clavichord since 1992. Do not pay attentiion to the sound of this video. It sounds much better in reality. I have been told that it is very difficult to record a clavichord, and this is the demonstration. Moreover, shortly after having bought it I visited several music shops in London, and could try three clavichords. Only one of the three had a nicer sound than mine. About tuning, I tune it twice a year: once "when the cold starts", and once "when the heat starts". You can tune it more often if you feel. I have it in a heated apartment. An unheated garage is still better, regardless of the humidity, as far as temperature end humidity are stable. What gets the instrument out of tune are the changes in temperature and humidity. If the temperature and humidity (low or high, it does not matter) are stable, this is perfect for the instrument. I know an organ professor who has a clavichord at home and keeps it in an unheated room, and he has a lot of trouble with his family while you will easily solve this problem it seems. To give you an example of how a clavichord reacts: I started to open during the summer nights the window where the clavichord happens to be, simply to get a fresher room during the day. This made the clavichord to be out of tune in a week or so due to these temperature changes. If you buy a Storrs clavichord, I would give you an advice. The frame of the feet is not rigid enough. You can notice in this video how the keyboard oscilates sideways. This does not seem to bother the player, but for me this is quite upsetting. You can change the feet or stiffen the frame as I did, with the means you choose.
@miguelrotaeche85822 жыл бұрын
And by the way, John Storrs is an engineer (he worked for Ove Arup in his youth), so the design of the parts of the clavichord is flawless from the point of view of mechanics. Not as many amateurish clavichords you can see.
