Verhulst only wrote one symphony, but anyone who listens to it can appreciate that it is a very good one.History loves the great overachievers, but there is a lot of pleasure to be gained by exploring the lesser masters.

When one hears that only certain composers reach a level that no one else can, one loses treasurers. Presuppositions limit what constitutes greatness. This is a very good work only missing a subjective reputation. It is on my revisit list.

Een groot gemis op het conservatorium waar ik 45 jaar geleden vertoefde: nul-komma-nul aandacht voor Nederlandse klassieke muziek. Dat moet ik voor een deel nog allemaal inhalen.

Very interesting Symphony, beautiful in some passages of first and second movement. Close to Mendelssohn and Schumann world but with characters of originality and the skill of a true symphonist. Only a little long with the developments. He should have written more. Thank you for sharing

Gran bella sinfonia.Si dissocia da altri lavori del suo tempo.Il monumentale primo tempo ha molto di innovativo

This is a great work! I wonder why Verhulst wrote only one symphony as he had great mastery of composition and orchestration. Thank you for sharing another compartively unknown symphonist!

It's always a pleasure to listen to these lesser known works which, understandably, the chef d'oeuvres of the great masters we all cherish, relegate to another layer and, unwillingly and unconsciously, we deprive ourselves of hidden beauties. WE LOSE. Appreciating a work like this I expand my musical horizons. Dankeschön Maestro Verhulst you have enriched my musical pleasures with your beautiful symphony which I value.

I'm musician and have always had a sense of perception that does not come from what I learned but from this "unspeakable" that I feel in others and in me, which is there at the present moment :-)

Well, Mr Dilfeng, or Mr Kuhlau or whoever or wherever you are, we in the more serious music-listening world owe you a massive debt of thanks for making this music better known. The 'canon' (i.e. the Mozarts and Beethovens) is possibly mandatory, but why are Verhulst and the amazing plethora of other composers you feature on your channels not much more widely known. BBC Radio 3 has a lot to learn from you. Thank you, sir.

Kuhlau, how old is this recording? I have two versions of the Verhulst, the Chandos one and the one with Hans Vonk and the Residentie Orchestra that was released in the States on the Olympia label as part of the series called "400 Years of Dutch Music." Is this a radio broadcast?

I like the refreshing Scherzo and the wonderfully energetic finale. The second movement seems a little out of place and like a Haydn minuet and rather light. I wonder if the symphony might be more balanced with an extra 'Cologne Cathedral' style movement, more austere in character, as in Schumann's Rhenish.

Yes. Especially when the coda to the finale shatters any hope of seeing the end of the tunnel.

A pleasant if slightly undistinguished work. Sorry to be a bit irreverent but am I the only person who hears chickens clucking in the first movement between 1:36 and 1:54?

There is a Schumannian touch, as well as (2nd. Mov.) Brahmanian´s. Late romantic ? But quite impressive, strong, fll of stamina and making me adding his name tosearch for more pieces. Thank you to those who digged this piece out and from the unforgiven and oblivious fogg.

Excellent material in the first movement, but it it loses impact from too much repetition, passages dragged out over one chord -- in other words it's long-winded. I hear the Schumann (and therefore Beethoven) influence, though Verhulst does have original ideas too.

Absolutely not a bad piece. But still there are to many influenses by other composers like Spohr, Schumann,Schubert,Beethoven and above all Mendelssohn. Instead of this performance I prefer the more accurately played account conducted by Bamert and Residentie Orchestra on Chandos.
@Galantski

Verhulst's main inspiration was his idol, Robert Schumann, who I hear most here. Schumann dedicated his _Overture, Scherzo & Finale_ to Verhulst. I know he'd been a Mendelssohn, and I'm not discounting that influence. In fact, as I write this, I'm hearing the final movement, which I'll concede is thoroughly Mendelssohnian, and the one most like that master, but the first movement is just as deeply indebted to Schumann, with the middle two movements being more of a mix. I really find it an enjoyable work, and will seek out more from Verhulst, for sure. Everyone is at one time or another influenced by another composer, almost everyone who followed Beethoven for decades was influenced by him, and before finding his own voice in composition, Beethoven himself was influenced by Mozart and Haydn. I don't think it detracts from this work that it's not completely original. We need to try and keep in mind that this was Verhulst's only symphony. As such, it's pretty impressive. As for performances, this is my first--but not last, I hope--hearing of this work, so I can't compare it, but I will take your recommendation of the Bamert recording under consideration. Thank you.
