The work comes across as more of a vast tone poem , rather than a clearly defined symphony. Full of colours and moods. It's like a journey through a landscape..

Some musicologists show a bit reluctant with respect to these symphonies of Bruch. I must confess that I do not share their vision. Probably there are "better" romantic symphonies. But these of Bruch seem to me sincere, well written, of a solid achitecture, with a simple and discrete but appropriate orchestration -altogh a bit thick here. I must confess that I love this symphony, - perhaps less than some others, but I love it.

I read in Bruch's bio that he isn't regarded as one of the "greats".His famous and most performeid work is his 1st violin concerto (which I love).Many of his original works weren't preserved,which is such a shame and loss for the musical world.He wias considered as ons of the last "late romanticists" who kept on composing in that vein although it wasn't as popular nearing the 1920's when composers like Prokoviev et al started ruling the roost.He stuck to his guns and actually produced quite a volume of work which sadly are not really played that much nowadays.

@asym52 4 жыл бұрын
The violin concerto you mention was written in 1866, however. The symphony here was written in 1870, still a long, long ways away from 1920, when he died. And he wrote very little in the twentieth century, not nearly enough to warrant "stuck to his guns."

As always for Bruch, the languaue is ultra conservative.The construction is hyper solid, the themes are noble and beautiful; the harmony is natural and efficient. To my taste, this is a very beautiful symphony but the orchestra is too saturated and makes a too large use of doublings and brass pedals. But this is common in the German orchestral language at that time. We could say the same about Franck. All in all, the three symphonies of Bruch - including this one - are masterpieces and dereve to stay in the repertoire of our concerts.
@klop4228
@klop4228 4 жыл бұрын
My only nitpick here is that you seem to imply (I'm sure by accident) that Franck is German, whereas he was Belgian/French (depending on your definition :P). But, yeah, I see what you're saying
@gerardbegni2806
@gerardbegni2806 4 жыл бұрын
@@klop4228 Not at all ! I know that Franck is Belgian/French. I just ment that his orchestra also is too saturated and makes a too large use of doublings and brass pedals. But in the specific case of Franck, this is an organist orchestral writing.
@pierreboland8910
@pierreboland8910 2 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that at this time, symphonies were ment to be heard once and to seduce at first hearing. What we now call saturation was a way to keep the audience passionate.

The wonderful painting ["Storm in the Mountains"] is by Albert Bierstadt -- but it depicts European landscape & mountains, and is not from among his famous USA- Hudson River School oeuvre ].... I don't recall which European landscape & mountains this one depicts, but it could well be in the Bavarian Alps......

Bruch is always snubbed by musicologists, always too this, or not enough that. Less good than, etc. The fact that Bruch was opposed to new trends in music surely played against his reputation. Maybe the style is somehow academic, but the result is magnificent, the melodies are divine (a feature never considered in itself, though intuitive melodists are rare) and well developped. To say that there is nothing interesting in this music just proves that it had not been properly listened at. For example, from 03:20 to 04:10, this music goes "from Beethoven to Bruckner", while at the time, Bruckner was not yet renowned for his symphonies.

Very nice symphony, and also a very good performance. However, if you try and listen to the other recording available here on KZbin, the one with Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Kurt Masur, you might agree with me that that's even better. Masur recorded all the symphonies with this (his) orchestra plus all of Bruch's works for violin and orchestra with Salvatore Accardo as the soloist, and to me those recordings are benchmark Bruch. But of course, you don't have to agree with me!

Will listen Per Salling, however as far as the Bruch Violin Concerto's go there is no better performance than Hilary Hahn soloist with the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada. It might be a slightly different interpretation, however the performance is totally inspirational. It's on KZbin and is highly recommended.
