Nikolaus Kraft played cello alongside Mozart and Anton Teyber on 12 April 1789 at Dresden on Mozart's Berlin journey. He was 11!. He also claimed to have been the cello soloist in the premiere of Beethoven's Triple Concerto. In 1795 he became a member of the first Schuppanzigh Quartet which performed the Op. 18 Quartets by Beethoven. This Quartet was funded by Prince Lichnowsky.

To be honest, I never heard about Nicolaus Kraft before hearing this concerto. Perhaps he was a professional cellist, since the concertos for cello were not numerous at that time. In the classical style (1815), I know only the two concertos of Haydn, as most music lovers. The treatment of the orchestra is indeed noticeable. This composer has certainly been influenced by Beethoven. The orchestral introduction of the first movement is exceptionally long and rich. The voice of the cello is not mellow, but energic and decided. All in all, a beautiful and noticeable concerto for cello of the first romantic period.

I believe he is Anton Kraft's Son, likely a great cellist too. Anton Kraft is more famous (if you can even call famous) as a great cellist on Mozart's time and has ? influenced Haydn in writing his cello concerto. Anton Kraft also played for Mozart's string trio (divertimento) which has a taxing cello part.

Ah, and that is a wonderful piece of orchestra composition if ever there was. Sadly quite neglected in the repertoire.

Speaking of neglected Rachmaninoff....when I first heard Gliere's 2nd Symphony (you want "wonderful if ever there was...") I was sad that Gliere never got all the credit he deserved for his foundation work of the romantic canon....particularly by Rachmaninoff (2nd Symphony, Isle of the Dead)

Stevee GALLO Hi Stevee, yes I agree. Gliere is one of those incredible composer's time has abandoned. No idea why. He wrote the most delicous music. I adore his harp concerto.

Sounds more Mozartian than Beethovenian, to my ears actually. I'm only a few minutes into the first movement though.

In fact the composer's name most probably was "Nikolaus Kraft". Not "Nicolaus". See: [[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikolaus_Kraft]]

Around 9:00 or so, the cello seems to play (not continuously, but in some spots) in major, while the orchestra is playing in minor; is that the composer's intention, the interpreter's mistake, or are my ears playing stupid?!
@elpelucagarcia2

Interpreter's mistake, he was playing out of tune. The score says C and he was playing it sharp.
