What never ceases to amaze me that this is one of the last countries where this whole thing is "real" - not a l'art pour l'art spectacular or entertainment but a real military made up of real soldiers for a real sovereign. That's what makes it so special. Britain should keep its traditions alive forever, for the greater good of all mankind.

That ‘conversation’ between brass and pipes at 5.00mins is just splendid. Thanks.

Good. But as an ex Royal Highland Fusilier, I have to admit that the best bands in the British Military are the Royal Marines. Oorah brother.

If you have the opportunity to see any British military bands, don't miss it. I saw (one of) the Royal Marines bands some years ago in London. Fantastic. Here's a salute from a Canadian to all British military bands. You men and ladies can be very proud. Thanks.

ARNHEM!! What a AWESOME march for the Guards Massed Bands to open with! Next the 79th Farwell to Gibraltar with the pipes. What could be more bittersweet, emphasis on sweet. I can't remember the name of the Third march. I have it on a recording by the Irish Guards and I will look it up. Thanks So Much Mart for being there! Haven't been able to make it since 1998. Peter 99 Er, tell that to the Marines! (I'll get me coat...)
@Peter-lm3ic7 жыл бұрын
Michael Cousins O'Neill: Which Marines are you talking about? US Marines? A good chance! UK Royal Marines? Excellent musicians but, as an ex infantry man, not as a marching band at the head of an infantry column? No chance! Their bass drum best is not pronounced enough. The Brigade of Guards Bands, I say again are unbeatable anywhere!
@aislingmichaelaoneill10287 жыл бұрын
Peter 99 You are taking a joke based on a popular saying literally. As Corps of Army Music (including Guards musicians)/RM comparisons go, they have different styles, and I personally wouldn't care to take sides, speaking as a former RAF air traffic controller who respects both. RM percussion relies more on the drums played by the 'buglers' in the first two rows.
@moontjuhelffje25657 жыл бұрын
The first 2 rows?? You mean the 4 row's of Cornet's not Bugler's
@Peter-lm3ic7 жыл бұрын
Michael Cousins O'Neill: Yes the RM are excellent but IMO they have not the crispness and the beat of the Guards Bands as a marching band at the head of of a column of infantry! I know I have this experience when in the infantry with the regimental band at the head of the battalion after a day of a route march! The Guards Bands are the best of all marching bands!

A pity you didn't drop back to get the pipes in 79ths Farewell to Gibralter. The band accompanament is not the main theme. One of the best pipe tunes ever when you can hear them. I'm wondering why the cornets are behind the trombones. Usually they are at the rear aren't they? Troms,basses & euphos, horns cornets, reeds.

I thought it was called National Emblem? That was my favourite tune to march to when I served in the 9/12 Royal Lancers and thats the name that members of the band gave it.
@kenUK7627 жыл бұрын
That's 'Wellington' by Wilhelm Zehle.

My humblest apologies Kenneth, just spoke to a member of the band and he assures me it is 'Wellington'. All these years I have been misled! Still my favourite marching tune!
