I am so glad to hear that you are going to give this a try. I really believe that you will enjoy it and like what you create! It is so portable. I braid while watching TV. I have even used old string that I found in my junk drawer. It turned out to make a nice 16 inch necklace. It's unique and is now one of my favorites. Good Luck and have fun with it. There are a lot of ideas on the internet, too.

I have been doing Kumihimo bracelets and keychains for a couple of year now, and I am starting to make money with it by having big orders. Currently I am doing an order of 50 bracelets for someone, and they are all different. I enjoy using the embroidery floss because it is monetarily more in my ballpark and also, I just like the look of it. I like the satin cord ones also but have not made many of them. Your video is great for helping first time braiders. Its nice to meet you :)

Hello! Wow you are fast! In a nutshell for thin cord as in crochet threads I double the length that I want my finished piece to be and this gives enough extra length to finish the braid. With thicker cord as in satin cord or ribbon I found that eight strands of 50" long produced a 17" braid. Generally the thicker cords produce a shorter finished length than do the thinner cords.Hope this helps!

Hi! I have not tried to use more than eight strings. If I want a thicker braid, I double up each of the eight strands, so I use 16 strands, but they are doubled to still use as the eight strand braid. I have even used triple and quadruple of very thin crochet thread, but again still in the eight strand pattern and with bobbins. I must look for these other videos and explore more as you are already doing. How interesting!

Thank you so much for this great tutorial, it was so easy to follow. Am just starting on working on Kumihimo so am very much working 'blind' so was thrilled to find your video. Can you tell me how I work out how long I need to make the cords to obtain the length of braiding I am aiming for? Like, how long do my cords need to be to make an 18 inch necklace and how do I work out the size of the endings that the ends of the braids go into? Many thanks

Oh, also, I use the spools to keep my string from tangling when I do large orders of the same style, and my fiancee said that the sound of them 'banging' together is very soothing. I seem to always help him fall asleep when I do it before bed. :)

Wow! Thank you so much for posting this! I was really confused by kumihimo before now, but now I understand it perfectly and can now go about doing it! You explained it simply, yet expertly! Your necklaces are beautiful by the way :) I was wondering, I make bracelets, you know as a hobby, and I don't have any of the fancy ends you have. Can you just plait the two ends and tie them together like when you make a regular friendship bracelet with embroidery thread? And would embroidery thread work in the kumihimo disk? Thanks for you help, if you answer :)
